Well... I just couldn't wait. I had to get this thing out and fly it again. So even though it was a bit windy... Well, the new struts failed and in she went! All that work...!!!

LOL! Come on, I've been working my empennage off! When have I had time to fly? (Empennage, get it? That's a good one, no?)

Good catch Robert, not pullin' one over on you.

David

Was just kidding about the cruel part.
But like Steve said, sadness for a moment.
Then quick wit Robert set me right.

Gullible I am.

You know the story of "the boy who called wolf" .... the fact that there were no pictures to back up the April fools prank, I didn't think it was true either... but I do wish you luck on the re-maiden... check and double check everything before hand !!

I just couldn't let the day go by without one April Fools joke! And, believe me John, I'll probably be double checking things twice! I guess that's a quadruple check.

It looks like I'm going to have more time to work on this now too. Our humongous project at work is finally nearing the end. We had our FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) this week, with a few bumps along the way. The customer is headed back home and will meet on Monday. Tuesday they will tell us if they will accept the machine and what kind of conditions there may be. For now though it looks like it is back to normal hours. Now if I can just take the 2-1/2 weeks of vacation I had left over from last year! Gee, I could finish up this Cub repair, I could finish my Ultimate repair, then I could get back to my Stinson build! Wow! I just can't fathom that right now!

Just take it one plane at a time David. I know, I'm trying to finish up two ambitious projects while trying to finish getting the rest of the fleet ready to fly the new season. Seems like a wild goose chase at times.

No workie on any planes today. I had much more important things to do. First it was flying three of my planes in the morning. Arriving home around noon I received a text from my neighbor who built an RV8A in his garage. He wanted to know if we were flying because he wanted to buzz our field. I replied everyone was gone, but if he needed help flying... So he invited me to go up with him. He didn't set it up to be aerobatic, but I could tell when I took the stick it sure could be! Very responsive and a great flying airplane. After that was a bike ride. It was a bit windy which made it a bit tougher, but that's just what I needed after a long haul at work... exercise! All in all a great day!

Here's a few pics. I have one real short video, short because I must have my camera set to a fixed time. It is however still uploading, and I'm not sure if it's even worth posting.

Ha! Like she even has a say! Actually, she wasn't around. She took her mom to Oregon to see her son (my wife's brother) for the week. She just couldn't say no! And since I watched the guy build this plane, I know it's rock solid. He is a very thorough and particular guy. Anything that wasn't perfect he would redo. This wasn't his first home built, he had also built a Harmon Rocket.

The only thing I didn't like about it was that he doesn't have any instruments in the back seat. So to maintain my altitude I had to look around him to his electronic instruments. He doesn't even have rudder pedals or throttle in the back seat. To use his words, if he had a heart attack I'd have to fly around until the thing ran out of gas, then land. I said let's not even talk about that! (By the way, I won't even tell my wife that part.

So I finally got some days off of work and have been working a little here and a little there... very little... and have laid down some paint. I've come to the conclusion that I don't necessarily like using latex or maybe I need a little tutoring. Anyway, I'll give this a day or two to dry, then clear coat everything and put it back together again. Shouldn't be long now!

Hey, look at what I'm doing! (Pic #1) Then look a little closer and you'll say "WHAT THE...?!" (Pic #2) That's what I said, how did I get that far off on the forward strut? I'm thinking of shortening the strut by cutting it at the jury strut, then splice it back together with an aluminum joiner, similar to what I did for the ends of the struts. Should be plenty strong. Any opinions?

This last pic is for Anthony's amusement. The Solartex is wrinkling up and needs to be re-shrunk! The rest of the Cub doesn't look that way. I'm guessing it's from storing it in a hot garage. Next time it'll be Stits! Go ahead Anthony, say it!

Since I don't speak Cub, I don't know what is amiss with the strut.
But I do speak wrinkle, explanation not necessary

You'll get her straightened out no doubt. Onward

Well, we were getting a new bed this weekend, so I had been inside after work trying to do some major cleaning in our bedroom.. that is when I felt like it. Then the wife informed me yesterday that she had postponed the delivery until next weekend as she will not be here on Saturday night! Man, I could have had the first good nights sleep in a long time, new bed, no one to bother me! By the way, what's said on RCU stays on RCU, right???

So, since I wasn't doing any house cleaning today, here's what I got done on the Cub:

Kevin, this first photo is for you. Take a look at the two arrows. Those two holes need to line up in order to insert the screw.

Here is what I did: I cut out 1/4" right where the jury strut attaches. I then cut a piece of hard wood, it's actually the wood that comes with the kit for the struts. I shaped it to fit into the streamline tubing, it was much easier than using aluminum! This time I decided to test fit everything before JB Welding and painting. This will just need a little touch up once I pin the wood in place. If I'm careful enough you may not even be able to tell I cut it to shorten it! We'll see.

Hey great progress on the cub's struts. Good solution.
A new mattress will sure help with the sleeping thingy. We replaced our old one a couple of years ago. Much better. If your body ain't comfortable and can't get comfortable, You just are not, no way, no how going to get a good night's sleep. And us that need to wear CPAP's are marginal already for proper sleeping.

Oh and

All ways dry fit first, and as you go. That said I have done so and still really screwed it up. Uh, you saw that last Saturday.

Dave,
Ha ha ha ha, good to see someone else has the same problems I have with the stuff.

You will love a real fabric finish once you try it.
Later!

Uh... "Sit rep?"??? I'm going to assume you mean "Still repairing?"

Repairs are complete and she's ready to put in the air again. Bad news is we are doing a bunch of OT again at work, this time it's 7 days a week, 11+ hours! Combine that with the valley heat and... I'M POOPED!!! It should be going back down next week, so possible next weekend I'll re-maiden. I'll see if I can get some one to video it for me.
