The OP has been an active contributing member at RCG for years using the same name. Checking his history this bizarre and urgent spamming across several threads (and now sites) about this subject is very recent. Makes me wonder if someone other than the real gtx has control of the account?

15 miles out, and return... so aircraft would be in the air 30 minutes at 60mph.. that would kind of limit the electric options. You should have reserve for those extra windy days too. I would want power for 60 minutes. 60oz of fuel??? you would have to test to determine.

Ok... I would go with large gasoline powered plane to keep the fuel cost down. 50cc engine. I would go with a large telemaster or cub style high wing plane. The problem you have with gas or glow is the vibration, so you would need isolation and a camera gimbal. The three axis stabilization is offered in several packages. You are going to need an autopilot with GPS navigation capability maybe a pixhawk from 3D Robotics.

Single engine plane over water is always going to be a problem with engine out... so you need to be thinking about this.... maybe a push pull twin engine aircraft.

I'm so glad you are "working to keep it safe."
I'm also so glad that your brother and his friends are pilots. Whew, that takes all the worry out of it for the rest of us.

But better yet and as previously suggested, go down to your local FSDO and run your idea past them, and get their advise.

I mean, REALLY! Are you nucking futs!!??
But if you also want to do this three times a day, I have to ask ... Who are you stalking?

If you want to "just observe" what's out in the ocean, then get in a real plane and look for yourself. A Cessna 152 could fly slow enough for you. Then you could see whatever you want and even circle around for another look if you like what you see.

Here's what you will see ... and lots of it.

Now go find something else to do with your spare time.

LOL! well put!

I notice he gave up. I also noticed no one responded with "Thousands of ISIS fanatics kill people every day - do you think we would tell you how?"

I'd suggest, for a flight that far out and back, that a good 4 meter glider, would do the trick, with some modifications, of course. That way, you wouldn't have to solely rely on motor driven propulsion, alone, but make use of the air currents, to save battery life.

You're not going to find what you're looking for here. This is a site pertaining to the HOBBY, not UAS operations. There are several sites and forums for your interest, this just isn't one of them. www.auvsi.org is a good place to begin. The fact that you joined just a week ago and are asking a question that would seem to try and implicate folks on this forum is boring and lame. Gentlemen this person is likely, what do guys call them, a troll. Cheers

Yeah, we don't like YOUR kind around here Kid!
Maybe he can mount a camera on a balloon, and tie them to his fish.

Biggest problem would be keeping your radio in range. It would cost you thousands anyway you did it...

Too funny, Some seem paranoid! While outrageous acts of RC are threatening the hobby (by that I mean the onset of regulations) I think the question was quite simple and interesting. What kind of readily available hdwre. is used to achieve such a range?
That's it!

Radio no problem as long as no telemetry involved. Simple VHF can achieve many more times that distance as long as curvature of Earth is compensated for with height.
Even telemetry could be simplified come to think of it. I have 5 w hand held VHF radios that will TX for long time/dist

I would suggest a large metal can with small handles, Put your money in that and send it out to see what you get.

He got a much friendlier reception to the same question over on RCG. Good to see at least some people in this hobby still trying to be helpful.

Well, yes. You are in Australia. If you want to fly out with a go-pro 15 miles, maybe someone here can help you. What you do in Australia stays in Australia.

Why in the world should I try to help someone as they try their best to eliminate this hobby as we know it today? That simply makes no sense at all. Perhaps a downfall of this thread is that many of us didn't explain better why the proposed activity was unwise in today's environment. But early on it was clear the OP wanted none of that. Actually all of us were unwise for responding at all.
