Go for it

BTW, I see you tinted the canopy; it came out nice, what did you use, spray tint, or rit's dye?

Nice, it will look good on the yellow bulldog scheme... I like a subtle green color, but its a hard color to get right with the rit's dye.

The spacer has been epoxied to the nose former. The fuse panels have been re-cut and awaiting their turn to go on as soon as the epoxy is dry enough.

Robert,
Great job as usual!! I like how you bent the wood to conform with the fuse. Nice!! The panel line screws add that scale look. Very clean!!

Nice job Ace... I was under the impression there was a bigger gap when fitted (requiring a bigger filler), but it looks like the cowl just fits from the firewall forward... that attachment stand off worked out perfectly, and I see clearer why you had to remake the panels... that's quite an oversight on their behave, unless they decided to leave it up to the individual builder to devise their own unique way of attaching the cowl... I've seen quite a few ways of attaching cowls, magnets, invisible plywood rings fiberglassed inside the cowl that attaches with screws through the engine cooling openings onto a matting plywood ring on the firewall... but I'm with squirrly, those mounting screws look very scale like.

Squirrly, I hope this doesn't become a shelf queen, Ace has certainly done some high quality work for you, would make a great static model, but rather, fly the hell out of it to appease the RC gods

John M,
Hi John,
It will be a shelf queen for the first month or so. Long enough for me to stop drooling and take a few pictures. Afterwards I will point it down the runway and let her rip!!

Well, to keep in the spirit of the above post I have to say I am not using the kit supplied mount for the canopy, see pic 1, the front piece. I will make a wrap around out of glass like I did mine, almost ready to lay the glass now.

Yes, the glass wind screen frame definitely finishes it off.

Where did you get that photo from?... I know its not one of yours, the canopy fit is par at best, not even cut cleanly, has scolloped edges and that little stress wrinkle doesn't look so great.

Five ply of glass has been laid up, 3oz inside and out with 3ply 1-1/2oz in between. I will let this set until morning then do the glazing for prime and paint. Then I can continue on with the canopy install..

Hideous is an understatement... they're probably photos as they were going through the prototype process, but they should really show better finish work in their manuals.

It really does not matter how well their work was shown. That piece, by design, does not work for me.
The resin had set enough to stop moving so I added one coat of glazing. For me the glazing is a half ounce (liquid) of resin with about an shot glass amount of micro balloons. This mix gives an exceptionally sandable resin finished surface, perfect for priming.

That glass work around the front windscreen is going to make it all come together. Especially with that tinted canopy...SICK!! Thanks Robert!! A professional job all the way...

I have a 15+ year old bottle of K&B micro balloons, came in one of those clear ketchup squeeze type bottles... it never seems to dwindle in volume... the stuffs like magic, a little goes a long way.; works great with JBweld for making non structural fillets on various types of metal... another great product was that F&M enterprises 2 part lightweight epoxy putty / filler... it was just like it had micro balloons in it, very low density; I use to just cut out equal parts with my exacto knife and then kneed it... great stuff to work with, and it sanded like balsa.

That stuff is called Super Fill and does have micro balloons added. It is great stuff but a little to thick for this application.

Well, speaking of nuts. After doing the final trimming of the screen and frame I did not like the fit. The screen is good but the frame needs to be a bit higher on the corners. Sooooo, I have laid up a new one.
