More progress on the Cub. With any luck and a bit of good weather I should be able to run the engine this weekend. Building the struts turned out to be quite eye opening. I trust older designs, so I thought nothing about laying the struts out over the plan and drilling the necessary holes. When I mounted them to the wing the jury struts were way off. I contemplated leaving it alone because I didn't want to weaken the spruce struts with more holes. I compromised and made the front strut and then re-aligned the jury strut so the rear strut would be even with the front. It is now correctly drilled and mounted. I used JB Weld to fill the original hole, so hopefully this will add some strength to the area.

She is airworthy...there was a beautiful weather window last weekend and my receiver battery stopped taking a charge. It's been raining ever since. I've been slowly adding details that I intended on adding after the maiden. There is a window tomorrow it seems, between 10 and 1...we will see how good the forecasters are New battery installed!

Thanks! she flew great! anytime you want to come fly over here let me know, just need an AMA card. Any Scale meets over your way? I've done a lot of flying out of Tri Cities airport.
She is beautiful You will love the way she flies. I have the FW Sig 1/4 Cub and the Hanger 9 100 inch fabric covered Cub. Good luck on your maiden.

Thank you Richard! it is one of the oldest and best designed models out there that is still in production! I hear the Hangar 9 Cub is really nice flying machine as well.
Here are some pics from yesterday. I ended up taking the cowling off to make engine adjustments...it was a bit grouchy from not having run in a while. It is still not 100% but I got the high end smoothed out and the idle fairly reliable after about an hour of tinkering. I taxied it around for about 5 minutes to make sure the tailwheel springs were adjusted right. After a couple high speed runs with the tail up it felt right. I taxied back over to give the controls one final check and off she went. About half throttle it flew off with little effort. I did about 5 laps around the field and all it needed was a bit of down elevator trim and touch of left aileron. The engine hiccuped pretty good so I brought it in. Daylight was running out so hopefully the weather holds and I can get back out tomorrow early and get the engine dialed in. She still needs a bunch of the details added, seats, dummy engine, bungee covers...but overall its airworthy and I have a new favorite
I really appreciate everyone's kind words, advice and comments, been a blast getting back in to the hobby!

My wife and I took the cub out flying today. She took a couple quick videos which I spliced together. Officially flights 4 and 5, the weather here has been crap. It is a great flying airplane, I can't wait for summer and better weather.

Jim , what an excellent build job. Your dad and grandfather would/should be very proud of the skills you learned from them . You learned well. I know I would be very proud if my son and grandsons could build like that .They can and do build some small projects but I just can't enough time with them to teach them much any more .

Thank you guys! I've built a lot of models and I honestly don't remember any of them being this much fun! @CK, I am truly thankful they had the influence they had, this hobby continues to be a great journey.

Congrats Jim, sounds like your Sig J3 experience is same
as mine. I have been flying the full wing version for several years. Just today I scored a very well built and Koveral covered clipped wing at our club swap meet. It just needs painting.t
However, I do not have the struts for the CW. I think they are different than the FW struts. Do you have a copy of the CW strut detail you could send me. Any form is ok, a dimensioned sketch would even work for me. Thank you very much. Sincerely, Richard

Yeah you bet...give me a day to get the plans out. Years ago I built the long wing...the struts are essentially the same, just shorter. The brass tubing is the same, the metal tabs are the same, and the spruce is the same. As far as I can tell they are very functional. I didn't fiberglass the center section but I did build a 20" box spar with carbon fiber tubing. So far so good It is a great flying airplane and is only getting better. You'll love yours!
