No, I did not. I have a Zenoah G62 with fake radial using plastic, epoxy, etc. and ended up at 26# and no added weight.
My Stearman going on the market soon.

Did anyone use an Evolution 7-77 radial on there Flair Stearman? It looks like I might have to trim the cowl in order to use the exhaust collector ring or cut the exhaust tubes themselves.

Do whatever it takes. I'm sure it will be fine. I've seen all kinds of variations with different engines. You try to shoot for total 100% accurate scale look but in the end no one will grade you...just make sure it balances and flies well.
And I hope you don't end up with the climb tendency mine has.

I have an original ST 710 Siedel radial mounted on my Stearman. It has not been reliable enough for me to have flown my plane. but it balances out right. I also did a full mod on the firewall.

Thumbs up

Outtacontrol, your pt 17 is really nice. I personally think its way underpriced, but in todays non drone market, ya gotta do what you can when you sell.

The Flair Kit you and I both have built is simply one of the best ever made, even compared to the BalsaUSA it is still a beautiful and well engineered aircraft.

I hope you get lots of offers!

What will you build to replace this?

Ricki, did you get the build manual?

Outacontrol41 is a great resource, he made a custom set of decals for my PT17. He is one of the good guys!

I'll probably replace it with the Phoenix Waco with a Saito radial gas engine 90, and add a smoke system.
Just a FYI.... I have another Flair Stearman built but not covered on the shelf. I will probably continue to build and finish that one next fall/winter. Might put a Moki 180 on it.
As for this Stearman, it's pretty well worn to ask top dollar, but still a nice plane...plus I need the space.

Wow! Looks beautiful! Love all the rib stitching. Any flight videos I can watch? Do you have more photos posted somewhere?

Re: Where have I been:
When the Metro Parks shut down my club that really took the wind out of my sails. My old club got a new field but its so small I can't fly any of my airplanes there. There are other clubs but it just wasn't the same.
  • As far as where have I been I still live in Ohio with the same beautiful wife and I still work for the same company although I am a Network Engineer now.
  • I bought a Jeep Rubicon and got stuck my 1st time out. I decided to upgrade it myself with lift kit, bumpers and so on. I have been on trails rock crawling all over the country: Rubicon Trail California, Florence Oregon, Ouray Colorado.
  • I am on the verge of getting back into this stuff. I really miss building and flying.
  • I am getting rid of all my ARF's except for my 1st one which is sentimental.
  • I still have the Stearman although I never finished my modifications (Getting her back in the air is my next task).
  • I will hopefully become an airplane snob and only fly what I build from kit or scratch.
That kind of sums it up.

I am amazed that you guys have kept things going all these years. You guys are dedicated modelers. I applaud all of you!
