I've started on my fuse also and should be framing up soon hopefully.I'm pretty busy with other things like work etc.I guess I'll follow suit and notch in F13,14,16,17 in 1/8" and trim the formers ahead of F3 etc, like Ken and Newf did...

WOW... I haven't been getting the e-mail post... Now I'm Back. Just to let you know, I'm building a trailer for my SD so I can put the seat back in my jeep. It's going to be 4X8 foot and 42 inches high. Hope to get it done in the next couple of weeks. My Daughter's band competition takes priority, so we'll see if it gets done.

I stopped following this thread a few months ago when the activity died down and I stopped receiving email notifications of new activity. A lot of things have transpired since my last post and the past 10 pages or so have proved interesting reading. Ken I sympathize w/ you over the corsair, what a beautiful bird she was. marcus, I've followed your build for a long time wondering if your SD would ever fly. Then rejoiced when it finally did and I got to witness it through the miracle of modern technology. Such a short life of such a beautiful airplane with so many hours of your personal time would probably be mourned for months/years by most modellers... But what doe the great Marcus do? He jumps right back on the horse and starts rebuilding. Bravo

Thanks Russell for these nice words. Of course, I mourned a while but I soon realized there is no other way than to rebuild her - although I decided to leave that for the next year. I have started already, as you have seen.

Since I wanted a plane for every weekend flying, and easy to repair, if something happens, I decided to build another one, a sport scale version, with a different painting scheme.
That´s the one I am depicting below. There are only a few stringers and the sheeting of the front area missing. Then I´ll have to installe the RC gear and voilá, it can be covered. Started the assembly last Thursday afternoon, and workled only a few hours every day.
Enjoy it
Marcus

RD thanks for the comments on my Corsair. It was a fine bird that will be missed greatly but the show goes on. Any new plane that I build will be equipped with two receivers and I may go back and retrofit some of the older birds.

Marcus you sure are making some fast progress. Before you know it, it will be covered.

We had a good time in Austin although it was cloudy most of the time with a few showers. The Jungie pulled in the Best WWII award.

Jim broke his landing gear on the 1/2 scale Spacewalker II on the first landing. Ross did a great job flying the Wedell Williams racer and Monocoupe. I had fun flying the Jungmeister, SD, and Giant Aeromaster.

Here are a few photos.

Ken, you seem to have a good time at various events, and the Jungie deserves the awards...have you extended the shelf by now, to accomodate so many plaques and trophies?
Beautiful planes, the ones of your friends, sorry for JIM and his SW but I guess he´ll be back in no time.

Yeah, my SD will be flying way before Xmas, I guess...

Ken, why do you hide the Aeromaster? I don´t think I´ve seen any photos of it, and I am sure it´s a beautiful bird - guess the thread cops won´t mind you posting a few pics around here...

How´s the WACO coming along?

I started the front sheeting/planking today. Pix later

Marcus, I didn't hide it on purpose. You asked for it so here are some photos.

It weighs 21 pounds and is flown with a G-62 turning a 22 x 10 NX prop. It is a real hot rod but doubles as a tow plane with the tow release on top behind the cockpit. Of many biplanes that I've had, it is the best flying of all but modifications need to make it perform this way. The new ARF version should be a lot of fun.

Waco is still in the planning stages.

Thanks Ken, a nice bird indeed - and it seems I´m not the only one who put anime characters in the cockpit...Barney looks good inside that cockpit.
So he´s the one to blame on the crash a while ago...

See ya ´round

Actually, Barney was the victim. I think it loosened up a few teeth.

I really get a kick, at a flyin, when we put the planes on the runway for the spectators to file by. All of the little kids faces really light up when they spot "Barney the Pilot" in the plane. The pink, purple, and yellow color scheme goes along with Barney.

Notice my little sign below the tail servos.

Yeah I saw it...

Same happened to my Bunnywalker - sometimes I regret having sold that SW (I kept Bugsbunny the pilot) and someday I´ll build another one.
Kids always got crazy when they spotted BB in the cockpit...

Here´the pic of the planking going on - will leave the top open till installation of the fuel lines and wiring as well as throttle linkage is done. Should come next so I can finish the top of the bootcowl.

On the curved corners I think I would have made those out of a solid piece. I would apply ammonia to one side only and tape or rubber band in place until they dried, then glued them in place. It saves a lot of filling and sanding.

Here´s the result of a little sanding and filling, actually that was quicker to do than the ammonia and rubberband technique...and these pictures were taken before final sanding of the filler. I closed the top because the exhaust channel ist still open allowing for access to the firewall.
I also built the fin/fuse transition for the covering to lay on.

Just some trivia...
I recall the good old days when we used Ambroid cement and had to pre-mold the sheeting before glueing (actually: cementing) it on and pin down otherwise it wouldn´t conform properly...of course the same technique can be used to pre-mold the sheeting and yet CA it on, but I just didn´t want to wait overnight.

Does any of you remember Milt Boone´s Rudder-Only .15 powered Charger that appeared on the old Ambroid ads? I built 2 of them, full house controls, of course:
One 20% enlarged version, Enya .19 powered and one regular size, OS.10 powered, later converted to electric power with a Mabuchi-Type 550 can motor, from a crashed Goldberg Mirage 550... the latter one with the original painting scheme.
Both excellent flyers, I had a ball at the field with it.

Marcus

Hi Marcus, Ken, Lee and all others on this thread.
What a delight to see the thread is still going.
Good to see that you are all still there.

Marcus, I read about your mishap with the SD. I'm really sorry to hear what happened.

The reason for my absence is that I moved to a different town where I bought a business and have been quite busy since but am now back on track and want to start building again. When I moved, I had to sell most of my planes and only kept the smaller ones except the 1/4 Taylorcraft which I kept.
I think I might give another SD a go at some stage.

Ken, congrats with the trophies you are gatherng. I see you are doing well at the various events.

Look forward to hearing more from you

Ari

What business did you get in to?

HI Ken,

No Stngrays yet at least
I bought an IT business, - that's what I have been doing for a living for the last 20-odd years so I figured why not work for my own benefit rather than that of others.

Good to see you again

Hello all. although I haven't built the Hostetler Decathlon I have followed with great interest this forum since its very begining and have learned so much from you guys. You see during this time I was building the Hostetler Cessna 150 and being a Hostetler plan, well it had alote of similarities with your Decathlon. Therefore, I just wanted to say thank you for all your help. Here are a couple of pictures of my C150. Hope you don't mind me posting them in your Decathlon forum. Wing span;120", Engine; G62, weight; 33Lbs.

Hi Ari,

I sure hope you get back on the SD soon. It looks like the IT business will continue to be hot. I had a lot of interaction with the Texas Utilities IT folks before I retired. All of our plant control systems were heavily networked and I was a process control specialist.

Glad to have you drop in Hornet1. That's a very good looking 150. How does it fly? Is it aerobatic? We use names on this thread. What is yours?

I am a native born Texan.

Hi Ken,

When I moved up here, I had to sell the SD. It was too hard to transfer all the planes so I only kept a couple.
Where I am now is a small coastal town around 800km (500 miles) north of Sydney called Lennox Head. Look it up on the net if you get a chance. My business is in the neighbouring town Ballina.

Have you had a look at Wendell's Cessna Skyhawk?
Do you think it's a similar build?

Hi Hornet1 welcome aboard.

That is a nice C150 - and being a WH it should fly well. Pls let us know. Of course we don't mind you posting these pix here, we get sidetracked lotsa times...let's now how your model flies...

Guys, I had a radio glitch today - guess it was some sort of interference/failsafe, fact is the Mutley suddenly became crazy, I immediately cut the throttle, the engine died, and then the controls were blocked.
No means to regain control, I moved the sticks back and forth, and just could stand and watch the plane spiralling down to the ground. Fortunately, it hit the ground in a shallow angle, tearing off the LG and breaking the nose. Will have to replace the nose section from half the wing forwards. No big deal, but a couple of weeks in the shop.

Later, checking the controls, all worked ok. I can only blame interference...

SD is coming along nice, you had seen the pics. Will probably do RC installation and start to cover this week.

See ya'll around
Marcus
