RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
Morning gents, ordered a short kit yesterday from Kitcutters.com . Figured I could handle the rest but would also have some sticks to get started on immeadiately. Had I known you can get the plans from kitcutters as well I would have one stop shopped them. They charge 5.00 dollars more for their plans but shipping is included so they are actually 1.00 cheaper.
Marcus, I will more than likely stick to the plan, changing anything usually adds too many hours of extra work. I'm really thinking I will fly this plane by Fall 2006. Standoff/sport scale is good enough for me. I'm really looking for for an everyday flier as my finished product.
Bob, thanks for the advice. The oxen are slow, but the earth is patient.

Well, I had a good time Sunday afternoon flying my SD. The weather was very nice with light wind. Here are a few photos. I have to brag a little bit about our flying field in SW Dallas county. It's one of the most scenic spots in the county and is on Joe Pool Lake Park property. Our runway is 75' x 600' Petromat fabric.
My ZDZ80RV really does haul the SD.
Marcus, I sure am looking forward to your Wednesday maiden. Knowing you, you will have every thing in perfect shape and best of luck to you.

Marcus,
Will you please post a photo of your Decathlon complete with the wings attached? I am dying to see it. It is hands down the most scale kit I have seen to date and I hope to someday build one.
Thanks,
Mike

Russell... You picked a very nice every day flier to build. Good luck. Nice Pic's Ken.... I'm hoping to fly mine this weekend and try out the smoke system... Where did you get the Petromat fabric and how is it to fly off.

Hi Bob, our guys got the Petromat locally but I don't know where. At another club that I belong to (www.hawkfield.org) we bought ProPex at Texas Steel Culvert Co. These products are very similar. I like flying from it better than a paved runway because 1) It is much easier on a plane and 2) It has some rolling resistance which slows the plane down upon landing. 3) It is far less expensive than pavement. You can do a search on Google and you may find it locally. It is used in the building trades.
Mike you may be getting yourself into trouble with Marcus calling his SD a kit. It is a magnificent example of scratch building, from drawing his own plans to molding his own cowl.

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
Well fellas, thanks for the nice words...Ken, I am not sure I´ll do the maiden on wednesday because there are a few things left to do on the receiver and switch installation and I want to do it right before even thinking of flipping the prop for the first time.
I just don´t want to hurry and maybe, just maybe, forget or misplace something.
My goal of maiden it tomorrow has a couple of reasons: next weekend is Easter holiday, and I will be away with the family for the whole weekend (leaving on Good Thursday), and the other weekend our club will host the biggest aeromodeling event in Brasil, the FESBRAER, in it´s 21st Edition. This is a non-competition fly-in covering all classes from FF to Giant RC http://www.fesbraer.com.br/ - this year we´ll have another couple of stars shining at this show: Chip Hyde in person, Marcelo Bini and Marcelo Colombo, among others. We´ve had celebrities like Quique Somenzini, Garland Hamilton, Curtis Youngblood, Wayne Mann, Steve Helms, as well as others like Chris Chianelli, the late Frank Garcher and others, in the past...it´s a combo of aeromodelling and full size airshow. We´ll have the Air Force´s Demo Squad, called Esquadrilha da Fumaça (Smoke Quad), a private owned and telephone co. sponsored AT-6 Squad (Esquadrilha OI, 3 Texans) and some Ag Pilots demonstrating their Pawnees less that 3 feet off the ground...adrenaline high.
And such event is definitely a NO-NO for maiden flights of any kind. However, if I get ready for tomorrow, tomorrow it will be. Otherwise, on next Monday afternoon. But I will do it before the Festival. Be sure of that. Of course, will post the pix here...
Mike, my plane is not a kit, it´s scratchbuilt. I also built all the molds for the glassware: cowl, wingtips and wheelpants, as well as the landing gear including the tailwheel assembly, and everything in between...
Ken, thanks for the compliment.
Well, see ya around. A little work is still in my way - but this is what pays for the bread and the balsa.

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
For all those who were expecting a post of the maiden flight of my Super Deke, I wasn´t able te ready it for this afternoon. Will postpone the maiden flight to next monday afternoon, April 17.
One of the details that were preventing the final instalation of the receiver was the antenna outlet, which in this case shuold be scale as all the rest of the plane, and between monday and today I managed to build the scale antenna, which was painted and is at home drying in the sun, waiting to be final installed tonite - then I´ll be able to finish the rest of the installation.
Will post pix of the antenna when ready.

Hi Bob,
thanks for the nice words.
And yes, you're a good observer, it's the christian fish on the back of my wife's car...my SW has one too but it's not shown in the pix because the car is at the mechanic to fix a few flaws...
Will need it back on monday to haul the SD to the field...
Wish you all a Blessed Easter!
Marcus
P.S. As you all can see, I came back earlier with my family to have the Easter celebration at home.

That's a fine job of scratch building Marcus! I've enjoyed following your progress. Hi to all the guys on the thread. After finishing my SD cowl molds, I've gotten busy forming up to pour 9 yards of concrete towards moving my entryway and enclosing our carport. Hope to have a shop soon. Good luck on that fist flight!
