Sam,
the CD arrived today, enjoyed it pretty much.
Gobs of power, almost no noise.
One question, did you enlarge the rudder? looks like it's a little oversized, maybe it's an optical illusion...
nice flying site!

Thanks for the CD!

You're right guys, The rudder is enlarged about 15-20%.

Bingo! I knew it!

Hans, are there any updates on your HP? Or better, share the progress on your project with us, posting pix...

This weekend I will do some lightenin holes on the fuselage to save some 500g minimum.
Will end up as a flying Emmentaler Cheese but no one will see it under the covering.

See ya'll 'round

Yes they seem very fragile...however I believe they are quite strong.
Mine should have been built that way, specially because I will be using a smaller engine, so saving weight is imperative.

Guys, do me a favour: I have seen many pix of EMHW Decathlons with too big a front left window, seems that most of the builders didn't see or didn't care about the fact that the original has a top hinged pilot window on that side, therefore there is a second frame around the plexi that makes it smaller, and of course, with rounded inside corners. Only early Citabrias had those wide glassed, thin framed front left windows.
I am not the scale cop, but it just doesn't look right that way. These are some of the Details that add to the chracter of the airplane, and in my humble oppinion it should not be omitted on the model.
I am posting two pix to show the difference.

Just another detail: tapered LG legs, please! Those flat aluminum strip LG legs just look too "modelish" on such a beautiful airplane.

OK, I'll shut up now.

Okay, shut up now Just as we thought we were almost finished...

The window is a good idea, but the LG for now will be just square GFK I'm afraid.
But you never know, maybe one day....

OK, go ahead with the LG but I think the window, even if not hinged, should be corrected in oultine, don't you think? It's just a couple of pieces of sheet balsa, glue and a little "dremeling" (or as I see, "proxxoning") on the corners.
Haha

Just to let you guys know,

some new pictures added of this mornings building. Two fuses completely covered,

the third one will be finished tonight.

For your enjoyment, also some pictures of our engine-mounts ( I really like those )

Dang, those planes really EAT covering-material

Hoi Hans,
nice pics - and specially the engine moounts, they look very professional.

One question: what are those aluminum louvers for? I see them on both sides of the plane, arey they to allow for the canisters to get cool air?

Marcus, the louvers, that's our secret

no, kidding..

The intake funnel of the carburator extends through the firewall into the fuse. We built a box around that inside the fuse,
so that the engine does not take its air from inside the fuse, but from two (large) holes underneath the aluminium louvers.
They are faced forward, so we hope the engine gets enough air in-flight that way.

The box around the intake is dampened inside with (fues resistive) foam.
So we keep the fuse clean inside, and do some additional silencing at the same time.

The cannisters get their cooling air through the bottom hole in the cowl. They are also encasulated in sort of a box (tunnel)
inside the fuse to keep things tidy.

I like the way the mounts came out as well.

Hans

(P.S. - tomorrow some nice pics of the fuse next to a not so Big Lift )
Only three rudders and three elevator halves to cover left... oh, and the ailerons...

Hello Marcus and other SD fans,

I was wondering if you have a picture of the logo on the rudder of PT OTB? I have been finishing some detail on my model and I would like to include it. I have added some interior (leather seat and door trim, instrument panel etc). I have fitted the pants but have not completed the painting.

It flies very well indeed! I was worried about the strut fittings but Wendel has got it right. It flys all the scale aerobatic routines without a hitch.

I still am to decide how to approach the pilot, carve from blue foam or use a paper mache head and stuffed body. Any suggestions on a pilot would be greatly appreciated.
Regards

Geoff

Hey Geoff, Looking great there on the wing! Hans the factory looks like there is a lot of progress there. The mounts look great. Are you cutting them from stock material or laying them up yourselves? Marcus, I think you posted about the window on the left side. I am not sure that the outline on the Hostetler plan quite has it right either. I need to send those posters I got from the factory to you guys. They are the same ones that someone put on the site once I think. I am not sure that they are to scale either.
The wing tip questions...I think Lee made some of his own over the winter. I think he did quite a lot of scale on his. I am anxious to see some pics of it when he gets it done. I haven't made any progress this week. Finally flew the Taylorcraft this morning and had fun with it until the winds hit about thirty and got a little gusty. At least it wasn't straight across the runway. We have not had great flying weather when I have been off work. All else is well here....this time of year here in Oklahoma is a lot of landscape stuff for me. That is just about under control now. ....no more excuses.
Ari do you have time to stop by in July? I will be gone July 1 thru the 4th (Las Vegas to a sister in laws wedding). She is coming all the way from Japan to get married!
Enough off subject. Osh Kosh may be out for me this year as I did a couple of local show three and four day weekends. I have to see how it is going. If I go I will probably fly commercial into CHicago and then go from there. Have a great evening everyone.
Later. Jim J

Hey Geoff,
the pix look great! The plane really looks the part in the air! I guess you still have some details to add to the wheelpants, right?
About the logo, I haven't gotten any answer yet from Tike Bazaia, the owner, will try to get in touch with him again and try to get the logo for you.

About the pilot, there are really nice pilots at http://www.axels-scale-pilots.de/.
Also contact Diane Chevalier at [email protected] (that's our fellow JohnChevalier's wife).

Jim,
I looked at WH homepage and pic of the SD, I think he put the window with the rounded corners but not at the right scale.
Goto the fullsize pix you sent us all and figure it out based on those pix. Should not be a major exercise in guesstimating...
But a SD without that detail just doesn't look right.
I am posting a 3-view-clipping that show it quite well so you can enlarge it at the copyshop and transfer the measures to your plan.

I see what you are talking about Marcus. I can get a good idea from the diagram you sent.
Also from the pics. I need to get back out to that field and take a few more pics. I have been out in the shop cleaning and getting set up for the wings. They are the next step in the process. I have the top end of the fuse done now. That was kind of a stumbling block for me. Later. Jim J

Jim,

the mounts (and all other ply parts we used in addition to Harald's) are CNC cut.
Mounts are from 6mm aircraft ply, laminated on both sides with carbon. The firewall in the fuse is only laminated one
one side. The tunnel in which the cannisters ly is 1.5mm balsa, laminated with 25g/m^2 glass.

We've set a goal to be flying in two weeks. some extra holidays ahead, so it should be feasible.

Our wheelpant-design. going to be cut from sign material.

Yes, one is upside-down, but intended so you can read it clearly when we do an inverted low-pass

Hans, the Big Lift is obviously dwarfed by the Decathlon...I have plans for the Big Lift, someday when in the mood for building a sportplane maybeĂŤ'll build that one.

What was that riping off the covering on that pic? Some sort of accident or some forgotten tools inside the pacient??

What pic do you mean? 101-0149_IMG.JPG That one?

It's a bit misleading, I'm taking some scrap pieces of covering from underneath the finished fuse. No ripping off covering there! Though I must admit it looks a bit strange...
