Hello Guy's, I will get my P-51 Kit next week. Read in this forum somewhere in the beginning that the Robart retracts will not fit in the wing. What is up with this?, please give detail on the right scale retracts for this plane. Also, what needs to be watched with the installation of a DA-50 , planning to use scale Exhaust also. Any Info is appreciated.

Robarts will fit just fine....may want to beef up structure a little. Everthing you need to know is in :TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

FBaity, thanks for the Answers, but I'm confused, somewhere in the Beginning of this long Thread I read that the Robarts would not fit in to the Wing, the Gear was to fat and would interfere with the Top Wing Sheeting. Also, how can this ARF Manual (Everthing you need to know is in :TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!) help with the construction, I'm almost sure the ARF Version is somewhat different then the Kit.

I thought the TF kit and the TF ARF were the same size. Anyway I have the ARF with Robarts, 5" wheels, Moki 210 and I love the way it flies. When I started my ARF I read the entire thread I sent you....think it was about 50 pages then and learned a bunch.

Hello Frank. This P-51 seems to be a very popular Model with many Detail Options in building it. I plan to add Scale Exhaust, sliding Canopy, retractable Tail wheel if possible and other Options. My main concern is correct Engine Placement on the FW and the Retracts. Inner and outer Gear doors are readily available and should be of less concern. Thanks for your advise and Happy Landings.

I think the issue with the clearance was one I brought up a while ago. The problem was solved with shims between the gear and the mounts. I kinda jumped the gun and worried too soon.

You can apply the steps from the arf thread to your build with the kit.

i bought my cockpit kit and sliding canopy from a different company then top flite.. a whole lot of difference.. the cockpit kit was 100 percent better and the sliding canopy was great. in the process of getting back on the rebuild of the p51. when i bought it, it already had robart retracts in it. got the doors from same company that i got the canopy.. got these from aerotech models.. great company to do business with. they have more detail in there cockpits. even gauges on in color.

I think you can find some useful information about the landing gear mount, in this excellent explanation by a great builder.

How do you plan to make it functional? It just sucks in air for the carburator. Unless you want to route a funnel and some tubing all the way to the engine then Iwould suggest just leaving the airscoop alone.

Also, for anyone that is interested in seeing my build. I'm currently building a 1/5 scale p51d mustang from top-flite of course. For those of you interested my blog. Visit. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1065033

Don't be shy to post a comment, reply and or give advice. Its greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Joe

I plan to incorporate a functional Radiator Scoop ( open and close), not for Engine cooling, also functional Fuel Filler Cap on Top of the wings as in the Full Size P-51.
There is some great Info on rcscalebuilders.com

well im back on the p51 after most of the summer off. lots of sanding to do. got the sliding canopy and retract gear doors. Have alot of prep to do before glassing everything. I stripped the plane down. took all the old covering off and started to sand and add filler where needed. have the cockpit box build and now have to take out the old floor and install. also got the new fiberglass cowl. still have to work on getting the engine installed.. using a g62.

T.O.M.

Are the sliding canopy rails 4 3/4 in. and will you have to lengthen the cockpit by 1 1/2 in. to accomadate the cockpit kit and the canopy ? Just wondering... seems I have seen it done somewhere. Like maybe a gent over in England I think. Moved the Insturment panel forward by that much to get his c. kit and pilot to fit

?????????

do not have to lengthen. the sliding canopy came with new part that fits on to the plane then canopy mounts to it.. had to make a cockpit tub that set into the plane then mount up everything.. will show some picture later this week. got the cockpit kit and sliding canopy from aerotech.. great company to deal with.

Hi Can you send me a link to where you can make the functional scoop and fuel filler cap on the mustang. Because wouldn't you need a quick disconnect for the fuel line??? Because the real plane was fueled through the wings.

So can you please send me a link to that page. Thanks.

check out rcscalebuilders.com, ( Top Flite- P-51 Forum), there is a Guy in England who is doing great work on a TF P-51 also has a functional Radiator Shutter.
As for the functional Fuel Filler Cap , I'm still researching that and as far as I know, a scale Cap is not available. Installation should be easy, with connections between the Wing and Tank.

yes, RDS sounds great, no Control Horns to hang out, clean and neat. And not complicated to build.
I'm still looking for some detail about the counterweights ( Rudder, Elev. & Ailerons), need approx. sizes and the radius on the leading edge of these.
Thanks.

Can you guys tell me what kind of throws you are using? Are you sticking to the recommendations in the manual. And what kind of response are you getting with the different throws?

Thanks
