RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build
O my gosh! Wait, so everytime I fly I always leave those screws out untill it is time to land and pack up and go home? O my goodness thats why it was not working... I would always screw back on the screws because I was scared that it would be leaking and I cant fly without them screwed on. But even when I screwed the screws back on, my engine would still run fine but would take forever to start? Hmm.. wow thanks so much. Hopefully I see some improvements in the smoke system and ecspecially the fuel tank. I am so happy to hear thats what happened to you, and now I understand So that is the problem for sure, because I did not find any leaks or mishaps with any of the tubes lines or tanks. nchrome, I do not have 3 tubes coming from the smoke tank, I only have 1. And for the vent pipe, it was always closed when trying to run anything, because I was to scared of the fluids leaking while it was open, so I would always screw them back on. Maybe thats why my engine would take forever to start...
John, I tried using my mouth, because I was to lazy to go out and phurchase a syringe. Here is my conclusion: ok so when I pulled out one of the tubes from the nipple of the valve that opens and shuts, inorder for the system to operate, nothing happened, no air from my mouth would even move through any other tubes. This was when my screws were still screwed in the vent pipes. I will go down stairs today and unscrew the vent pipe screws and check if every thing flows correctly, and no pressure is being built up.
I'll give the engine a shot when it warms up hopefully.
Good thinking guys, and much regards,
Adisn

Does anybody have any pics of a DL 50 mounted inside the cowl on this model.. It seems like quite a bit needs to be cut away for the stock cowl to fit.

VanIsle,
I would not use the stock cowl when installing a rear inducted motor. Go to Fiberglass Specialities and pick up a TF P51 cowl. Very nice work on these. Its a full cowl to house the whole engine. The DL is what I am using and it fits great.

So I know most everyone is using either a Tru Turn or Dave Brown spinner. But has anyone used a Zinger P-51 spinner? Came across them on their web site last night. Seems the back plate attaches to the spinner from the back with flush fit machine screws. So no adapter screw needed. Just seemed interesting and though it might be worth asking about.

I say you should go with a Tru Turn Spinner (works amazing for me), probably the greatest spinners made for the Mustang come from them.
Hope this helps.

I haven't gotten a spinner of any kind. I was just curious to know if any one had used one. I have not actually decided on a spinner yet.

I am curious to know what the opinion here is on vibration mounts for the engines. The plans call for them, and from past posts I know a few people here are using them. But a bunch of people in the gas engines forum say not to use them.

One reason, I dont use the vibration mounts, is because once I was flying and when I came in for a landing, very smooth and landed, but once it landed the nose touch the ground just a little and the whole mount snapped right off with an ease. I say you stick with normal mounts for your plane, trust me you will not regret it. Never had a problem every since. Vibration wont do alot, unless it feels like an earthquake in the plane.
Hope this helps,

Eric,
DA and DL recommend not using vibration mounts. Some manufactures actually will void the warranty if you use vibration mounts. I still think it is up to personnl preference. I have 2 gas engines in arobatic aircraft and have not found the need for them. I believe if you check most of the engines that are mounted in the areobatic sections, you will find that they are mounted on stand-offs or other type of engine mount direct to the firewall. I don't think you can go wrong either way, but make sure and check the manufacture recommendations.

Hey Guys;
I am currently building the RTC Version and had originally planned on MonoKoting for covering, however, I have changed my plans and will be glassing and painting; I have for sale, brand new, never been opened or used: 1 Large 25 Foot Roll of Aluminum MonoKote and 1 Small 6 Foot Roll of Flat Black MonoKote; the perfect amount for this plane; the Flat Black was going to be on the top part of the cowl leading to the canopy; if your interested send me a 'PM'; I'd like to offer them to someone building this plane before I list it on the Marketplace or Ebay.

Any Ideas on what to cover the rudder with so that is paintable with the rest of the plane? I was hoping for an iron on fabric. Suggestions?

The opening will be a bit bigger but you get the idea.

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build
Well, I put an end to my stagnation today. I worked on the flaps, got the top skins on both and both flaps removed from the wing and sanded down. My engine will be here on Friday, and from the measurements I was given, I need to add just less than 2 inches to get the prop hub the correct distance from the firewall.
Upton, that mounting job looks great. I only hope mine will turn out as professional.

Very cool Upton, mind if I copy your install? I built a box for my stand offs and am not happy.Did you end up 81/8" from the firewall?

Do the mounting bolts enter from the back of the fire wall? Or did you counter sink them at the back of the plywood mount? Thanks again

I have the bolts going all the way through the firewall now. Haven't decided if I will leave it that way or not.
I'm open to other suggestions on that.
I found this muffler:

Not sure about that one either. It looks like it would fit inside the cowl with those dimensions.

Folks,
I have some good news for anyone (like me) who is looking for a DA or DL50 pitts wraparound muffler that will fit within the cowling of TF GS P-51. I just got off the phone with Al from JTEC Radiowave and he will be finalizing his design this week and will be ready to take orders next week. He thinks it will be priced between $110 and $120. It is not listed on their web page as of yet but will be soon. http://www.jtecrc.com/.
Jeff
I'm going to check out this muffler too.

Does the large center hole in your mount carry through the firewall? Sorry about all the questions and thanks for the help.
