Cunningham's Lazy Ace

I scratch built my first Lacy Ace from plans in '81, flew 3 years until the top wing came off, crashed destroyed. Built another one in '86, it is such a design, modified to look like a Balsa USA airplane at the time. This one I have only 3 pictures, it flew great, sold it at swap meet in 2009. The last one I built was '98, I did up up as an SE 5 for an airshow team, only 1 picture of it, it crashed in 04. I think I still have the plan somewhere. Very good design, it was easy to build and they flew great. You ask for pictures, here what I have.

JW. .thats cool...you know, that airplane really lends itself to all kinds of mods...and what a gentle flier too from what I remember about mine.I'll definitely build another one some day. Pictures were great.

Great looking DerJager. Is it from RCM plans or some other. I am cutting parts for the RCM plans now .Going to be a long project I believe but worth the effort.

Hi everyone, I just happened onto this thread and it makes for great reading. I just ordered the plans for the 76" size from e-bay and am getting the short kit from lazerworks. I am going electric with it and figure about 1000/ 1200 watts ought to do it. I have a question that might have been answered already, but how big of a prop can you use? I'm mainly concerned with ground clearance.
Thanks,
Mike

Das, the DerJager constructed from Lazy Ace plans 76". I just modified the tail group, widen the fuselage about 1 1/2" and used Alu. gear and wheel pants. All the Lazy Ace airplanes were great flyers, if I built another one it would powered with a gasoline engine, 20 or 26 CC.

I just acquired a Lazy Ace and looking to pull out the 2-cycle glow and go to DLE-20. Though I am looking for a cowl. Does anyone know what cowl options are even available or if there are cowls on the market that would work??

Lazi Ace beautiful aircraft !! I
I made several of these models, with different sizes.
Sach new project - fully designed three new models for motors 30ccm, 60ccm, 120ccm and 220ccm. This new look at this plane. All of these models are made using CNC and will be sold as a complete set of components for assembly.

Ground clearance on the standard Lazy Ace easily works with an 18 inch prop. One thing to note is the gear really flexes so even with a smaller prop its likely you will clip the ground with a hard landing when the gear splays out. Guys who have put gas engines in them have lengthened the gear and used more elastic bands as bungies. I have used bicycle tube rings with success they don't seem to be affected by the fuel as much.

I have an original Skymasters kit of a Super Lazy Ace. It has a 96" wingspan. I have had this kit for over 20 yrs. and I am not going to build it. I hate to see it sitting unused. I would like to see it go to someone who wants to build it. Please contact me if your interested. phil seven seven seven seven @embarqmail.com use 7 instead of seven. I am NOT looking to profit from this, I just want the kit to be used.
Thanks,

I've found a friend who's going to cut me a kit of the Standard Lazy Ace (76" WS), but I want to modify the wing mountings, both upper and lower, to be bolted on. I like the way VOX has modified the lower connection with the tongue and bolts, but I can't clearly decipher how the upper has been modified. It seems to me that large square wood structure could be eliminated to reduce the drag. Can anybody provide photos for how they modified theirs if you have?

No problem, I have some old photos. Perhaps they can help you.
This model is already 10 years flies. If you want I can make for you any photos.

Danke Albert. I do not intend to make the Horizontal Stab or Vertical Fin removable, but thank you for those images. I would like to see more images of the upper wing connection though. Specifically, how is the wing attaching to the square structure?

I helped make my friend model in Ukraine. He made a similar my attachment of the upper wing. I think that the photo you can see everything.
This is my version.
