RE: Buiding pics Waco YMF-5 Barth Modellbau
Hi Cesar and others reading this thread.
I have just acquired a Desert Aircraft DA 100 from a friend who is not going to use it and I wanted to ask what you guys think of it as a choice for the 1/3 Waco. here are the details for the engine
Specifications
Displacement: 6.10 ci (100 cc)
Output: 9.8 hp
Weight: 5.8 lbs (2.63 kilos)
Bore: 1.6771 in (42.6 mm)
Stroke: 1.3779 in (35 mm)
Length: in ( mm)
RPM Range: 1,000 to 6,700
RPM Max: 8,500
Fuel Consumption: 2.5 oz/min @ 6,000 RPM
It will turn a 26 x 12 up to a 28 x 10 prop or a 16x12 3 blade at I would estimate around the 6000rpm range for the larger prop. Its a bit smaller than the MVVS 116 you are going to use Cesar and produces 1.2 less horsepower. I appreciate that target weight etc play their part in how much power you need but I'd appreciate yours and anyone else's opinion on this engine as a choice for the 1/3 Waco if they have built and flown this model,
thanks,
Phil

Hi Phil,
The MVVS turns a 30x10 with 6200 rpm it is a verry strong engine I dont now how many rpm a DA100 turns with a 28x10 prop.
I think if you go with the DA100 use reso pipe's that give you some extra power.
The weight of the DA100 is a 1/2 Kg lighter than the MVVS116, for the correct SG (Schwerpunkt) you need some extra weigth in the front.
The Waco flies with a Moki 215 without ballancing weight and that engine is 4200 Gr.
The MVVS116 with exhaust is almost the same.
Furthermore keep your Waco so light as possible, there ara a lot things where you can safe some weight.
Than your flying style, if you wanted your Waco unlimited vertical or you wanted more common basic airbatic figures. s.a. Hammerhead, looping etc.
For the last I think the DA100 is enough, but if you want some more....Even the MVVS is on the moderate side in in comparison with the MOki 215.
Hi Bernie,
I am now busy with the aillerons and servo,s, tomorrow i am going to start with covering the wings and all the other stabilo parts.
Than comes the paint job the next weeks.
I hope you get your Waco in time Bernie, i have my fingers crossed.
Cesar.

RE: Buiding pics Waco YMF-5 Barth Modellbau
Thanks Cesar,
I hate putting lead in the front of aircraft and I would always try and save some weight at the back end first before I have to do that. I like too build as light as safely possible and I am more of a mild aerobatics flyer than an unlimited stunt head. I tend to imagine I am flying the aircraft in question. That helps me to fly a steady pattern but it limits the aerobatics to what I would be prepared to do to myself!! I'll give some thought to the DA 100. I also have a 1/3 Stearman kit which I was saving for later. Maybe I'll put the DA 100 in that and go for the MVVS for this one. keep sending those great pictures
thanks,
Phil

For a litle bit scale stitching on the wings I have done the following.
I take a piece aluminium offset plate that is used in a printing office and make with the backsite of a knife several grooves in the plate on a soft base, cardboard or something like that.
After that i turn around the plate and cut with a sharp knife strips of 5mm width.
I glue the strips on the capstrips of the wing, after covering you get a litle bit scale stitching on the wings.
I have done a test before i have done the whole wing.

Hello,
I am looking for a supplier of the decals for a 1/4 scale Waco. I purchased a set from Cajun RC but they are a bit off in scale. Are there any other suppliers out there you might suggest. I built the proctor version.

Hi Cesar,
good idea, the thing with the tin-stripes.It looks very good! As I know, it´s one on every rib to do. But considerate,
it could make disturbes your RC-reciever. Every tin-stripe is like a little antenna, and there are many of ribs.
I´m not the specialist in this theme, try to get more information about this.
What do you mean about using staplers, 5mm large, put them in with a tong or shoot them careful in to the ribs?
Regards from southern Germany

what you say make sense Bernie, it is the same as a dipool antenna with reflektors on it. You set me on thinking. I wil not take that risk.
I have not done yet the scale stitching on the wings exxept that one for a test, but what now?
I have tried it with stables but that gives also not the best result.
I do it now easyer with strips of covering material, i cut off with a notch scissors, i hope it is the right word. After covering i iron that over the capstrips.
I have done it on the stabilo. After painting you get a stitching effect. Maybe not the very best but oke for me.

I do not no Phil, i am not familiar with that type of transmitters. I shall search the internet for more details about it.
I also dont now if that kind of RC is available in the Netherlands. I am now working with 35Mhz RC.

Ceasar,
Check out the Cub Den http://www.thecubden.org/ site on Rib Stitching. I have seen this done in similar ways elsewhere. You end up with strips you glue on like the aluminum, but with out the risk of radio interference.
Or Check this place out, Scale Rib Stitch http://home.cablerocket.com/~scaleribstitch/ they do all the hard stuff, you just apply it to your plane.
The 2.4 Ghz radio is still fairly new here in the U.S.A., but seems to be much less prone to interference than other frequency bands. Don't know if it is availible in Europe yet.

Hi Cesar,
The 2.4 Ghz IS now being advertised in the British R/C press and is or will very soon be available for most makes, Futaba, JR, for sure, others I don't know yet. It should now be available generally in Europe although it is very new. It is supposed to be very safe against Interference, Receiver aerials are also much smaller. I think it would allow you to use your rib stitiching approach however I see above that people are offering you some alternatives so it may not be an issue,
all the best,
Phil

BigBoy99!
The cost for a Genesis to Germany is $470.00. The problem is that I won't have any in stock until November. I am completing my kit runs and moving into a larger facility. Then, I will develop 3 of the most popular airplanes on the US market in 35%, 42% and 50% but I am not saying what for now!!!

I have searched for a supplier here in West Europe but it is not so easily to deliver here.
You can use for the covering strip solartex or oratex but for a nice appearance you need a notch scissors with a fine indentation for cutting the strips.
You can see it here http://home.cablerocket.com/~scaleribstitch/id21.htm
All together some points to overcome.......

With Peter Barth I have an agreement, I will get my kit at starting may, because we travel on 15.04.07 in to holidays for 3 weeks to maldives
and it make no sense, to start building the waco before this termin..........puuuuuuh, 6 weeks more
Have a nice weekend and

Cesar,
Dany
the tape is called Pinked tape. It is so called because it is made with Pinking Shears which is the name for the zig zag scissors which tailors use to cut these zig-zag lines. There are one or two US suppliers I know who can supply it including I believe, Nelson hobby supplies. Tony Clark would be quicker but Let me know if you need details,
best regards,
Phil

Hi Bernie,
I used the MVVS 116 with K&S cannisters, I have got the same engine in my Pitts see: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_44...tm.htm#4498075
I like the engine verry much, it is strong, smooth and verry litle vibrations.
I am running it now on the Pitts with a 27x12 3 blade Super silent from Engel.
On the Waco i wil use a 30/31x10 2 blade prop.

The position is probably not scale but.....

Cesar,
The hatch looks good, I like how you modified the Robart hinges. The attached picture is of a WACO QCF/UBF that shows the luggage hatch behind the cockpit in the typical location on YMFs as well (don't have a good picture of a YMF luggage hatch). Also note the screws are very visible on this plane and yours don't appear to be any different. The second picture is of the front cockpit area with the front cockpit door. If you check out the WACO YMF build in the Vintage and Antique (pages 56-57, post 1386), you will see what some of the guys working on the Pica 1/5th WACO YMF have done with the luggage hatch. Nice job with yours, I'd leave it as is, most people won't notice. Keep up the good work.

Hi Cesar,
good job, that you are doeing. I like it!
Which weels do you use on your Waco? Peter Barth recommends 165mm size, but I can find only one with this measurement.
Are the wheel-pants big enough for wheels 175mm size and how thick are the axles?
