Default Gas engine for a Fourstar 120?

I,m almost through with a 4* 120 and i'm still trying to decide which engine. I've never used a gas engine this small before. (I have lots of gas experiance) I want to know if anyone has any suggestions on some engines. I have selected a few here so let me know.

Mark1.8 30cc gas; Never heard of it, but it looks like a Moki180 coverted to gas.

RCS 1.8 ; I've heard they where good engines, but I did have bad luck with their twin 44 as did alot of other people.

ROTO25; Heard nothing about this engine.

Evolution 26GT haven't heard much on this one either.

Finally the reliable G-26 Zenoah. Much cheaper, and garrentied(sp?) to run, but I would have to cut the cowl cheeks off. I rather not do that.

Well what do you guys think. (Please no Glow)

Nothing?
Well, guess I'll just have to take a chance and hope I don't get burned.

I guess I'll give the Evolution 26GT a try. Wish me luck!!

SPE26, 38 Oz, about the same weight as a 4 stroke of that size. It looks like a Mini DA50. Spins a 18x8 prop easily.

Try the posts here on RCU for Ryobi 31cc-powered Four Stars. There's a complete build in a post by Rcpilet on a Ryobi-powered Four Star. He takes you from the very start to the first flight, with nothing held back!! Another source is Marty Hammersmith's Home Page: http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaver...1071/4star.htm (Scroll down to Radio Controlled Models then click on "Ryobi Powered Sig Mfg. Four Star 120 Project" if this link doesn't take you right there.)

I've used several of these engines and they do a good job for the money.

Also check the Brillelli website - www.brillelli.com for thier Modified SPE 26cc and 40cc engines - I have the 26cc and it's a great engine - weighs about 40oz RTF with ignition and exhaust - sells for about half of what the Evo sells for. If you think you can stand a few more oz on the nose, move up to the 40cc at about 52oz - lots more pull and will suit a lot more models down the line.

Thanks Guys. I've looked at the Brillelli. It looks like a nice engine but, with the carb on the side I would have to cut the check off and I rather not do that.

All the engines on my list have a front carb or rear carb(except the G-26) I would like to fit an engine and muffler between the checks. Yes, I know it's a sport plane but it just doesn't look like a Fourstar with out them.

Wow, looks like I'm going to spend a lot of extra money over two little silly peices of wood. (Crazy man,Crazy)[8D]

Thanks agian!

Have you cosidered this? Cut the cheeks off, mount a G-26 type engine and then cover it with glass cowl, sort of like a lanier stinger.

I am working on a fourstar 120 kit at the moment, I'm going with a new 25cc giant supertigre that I've had for years. It needs a home and the fourstar will do well with this brick like engine on the nose.
I have a G-26 but it is currently doing duty on a 120 lite ultrastick. It is a great little engine, powerful, reliable and smooth. It never fails me.

I had a 4-120 with a G-23 on it, and it flew well. It would have flown better with a good 1.20 size glow 4 stroke. If you are determined to go gas, then find a fiberglass cowl that's close to size you need, and forget about the "cheeks". You are limiting your options. I've seen a 4* with Cap 23 cowl and it looked very nice. Birelleli engines are good. You would not be dissapointed. Roto's are good too, just kinda expensive.

I've got an Evolution 26GT on a 100" SuperCub, and it's a great engine. Mounts and handles like a glow engine, runs great, reliable, just an awesome engine. I'm sure it would be great in the front of a 4*

Keep the cheeks, go with the Evo 26.

I am building a 4 star 120 and want to use a G-23. Has anyone used a 23 and mounted it upright? What type of muffler did you use and does a 23 have enough power?
I have a GMS 120 2 stroke glow I could use, but really wanted a gasser. Wanted to keep the cheek cowls and maybe mount the G23 upright.
Need help,
Mike

Reminds me of another RCU guy (Memphisbelle) who usually builds big warbirds. He built a nice 4-Star 120 and mounted an old US41 on the front. Flew it gently for a while, then he discovered it would hover and do all sorts of aerobatics.

He gave it a heck of a workout for probably 3 months, got tired of it and sold it, went back to warbirds. I think he kept the engine for a Jug or something.
Cheers,
Dave Olson

OK, I know it's been awhile, but I bought an engine for my 4Star 120. I got a pretty good deal on a G-26 NIB at a swap meet. ($210)As a bonus it was converted to a RC Ignitions system. (I've always heard good things about his convertions).

Also, I was able to pick up a pitts muffler for it ($25)

The price was to good to pass up even if the cowl cheeks did have to come off.

BUT WAIT!! The good news is I was able to mount the engine and keep the cowl cheeks with minimal cutting.

The plane is almost ready for maiden. Just waiting on my prop and fuel filter to arrive. (Oh and the weather).

Here are a few pics of the install. (sorry for the pic quality, Cell phone camera)

More Pics later of the whole plane with a real camera.
