RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Guys, have you checked the decalage (wing x stab incidence?) I don't know the RC Guys SD so I am just wondering...
You can have the best right and down thrust however if the decalage isn't correct the plane will fly wrong. Probably the stab has negative incidence to the wing or thrustline, and that might get even worse if you raise the thrustline without increasing the downthrust. In this case the plane will be looking tailheavy as well as trying to pitch up out of loops or even at speed increases.
On my own 30% ( a little bigger than the RC Guys') I took over the exact scale incidences and I tell ya, it flew right off the board. Seriously! Of course also the balance point was right. Check out the first flight at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFSvgLkwYjc
It was powered at that time by a 50cc which proved to be the lower safe limit for flying.
Nowadays I am getting a bigger engine for it.

I have a few questions about this plane. I am building one for a buddy of mine and I don't know the locations for the flying wires. Also has anyone used one of the Evolution 35's on this plane? He spared no expense on this plane. JR 8411's 2.4 system upgraded to 8-32 hardware. Thanks

I didn't know there were predrilled holes, so I just drilled my own holes and mounted mine. Used the Sullivan Flyinng Wire kit. Worked out real well. Pics on p10, post #236.

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
I have read this thread with great interest and have reviewed the online manual.
I noticed there is mention of two (2) different dimensions for engine length (firewall to prop hub) depending on the cowl in the kit.
Can anyone expand on this situation. Is there a cowl in newer kits that fit appropriately? If so, how do you know what you will be receiving for proper planning?
Thanks in advance,
DR

I'm considering this plane. I'd like to run a gas engine with smoke. What would be a good gas engine to put on it and keep it light? I was thinking maybe a G38 with a Ralph Cunningham EI conversion.

I've had good luck with the Brillelli 46.....I posted pics in previous replies on this thread. Fits nicely within cowl, decent weight, pulls plane with authority. So far so good.

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Sorry for the delay in my flight report with regards to my Decathlon powered by a Moki 2.10. As you all know life sometimes gets in the way of fun... Well to put it short WOW. This engine set up is perfect for this airframe. The Moki running 5% nitro with an OS F plug swinging a TF 20x8 prop is amazing. The engine as shown in my previous post fits completely inside the cowl with muffler. There are no heat issues that i have found and the fuel draw is right in line with the motor mounted inverted and the tank in the most forward position against the firewall. I am not using any type of pumps or regulators. Most flying is done around 1/2 to 3/4 throttle while full tilt will give unlimited vertical. I did not have to add any dead weight to the nose of the plane for perfect balance. This set up is a winner and I highly recommend it if you have a Moki laying around or just want to power your bird with a large glow motor. I am also running a Dubro32 oz tank. Flight times are around 12 to 15 min with about a 1/4 tank left over.. I am running a BCS inverted muffler. Just an FYI to remember to run large diameter fuel lines and pick up with these motors

Mine's on the way! talked to Dan and he sounds like a great guy! Now for the decisions... I'm thinking Brillelli but I'm also curious about ZDZ's.

I did a good inspection and everthing stayed-put !! Nothing vibrated loose. Normally, there is something that ends up not where it was originally placed [X(] It's kind of hard to get a good shot of the guts but these should show the major components. It's nicely nose heavy as it is now. I'm using 2ea 1400mah, 5-cell packs for the radio and a 4-cell 1400 mah pack for the ignition.
I made the rear window removable to acess the rcvr/batts.
I still need to weigh it but I'm guessing 16.5 lbs or so. It flies like it could easily handle the extra weight of a smoker system - even at my altitude of 5k ft. I've got a smoker system in my big extra 300 and love it. The Decathon would really look good smokin too !

Did you have to add tail weight? I read where someone using the Brillelli had to move the rx packs way back to balance it.
My Brillelli is on the way. If its no problem, I'll probably have a few more questions as I put it together.
Thanks

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
My plane came in today. No shipping damages This looks to be a very high quality arf. The covering was nice and tight, labeled hardware bags. It was missing the manual, no big deal easily printed from their website. I did notice that the pre-drilled holes for the hinge points seemed a little too big for the hinges that were provided. There seemed to be a fair amount of play when the hinge point was dry fitted. I may need to find a larger hinge. The glue may possibly fill the void.
Overall, I think its going to be a keeper.
All I need is my Brillelli now!

I think 3/16 will be the closest size. Do you have the same issue?

Do you think 3/16 will be a snug fit. Can they be reamed to fit a 1/4" hingepoint?
I am going to upgrade most of the hardware to Sullivan 1/4 scale components. Will use Hi-Tech 5955TG servos, great centering and overkill on torque. I have them so I will use them.
Brillelli 46GT.
Lets stay in contact as we go forward with this assembly.

Use Gorilla glue and it will expand to hold that hinge point tight in a oversized hole. Have never had a hinge come loose using gorilla glue.

I'll check it this evening with a 3/16 bit. Need to be careful reaming the holes to not run out of material.

In fact, I think I'll test it this evening on some scrap
