RE: Hangar 9 1/4 scale Cub build thread...
Well we maidened the H9 Cub today and what a event it was ! The plane took off in about twenty paces with the Saito 125 and just flew incredibly well; no trim adjustments were called for and the landings were straightforward greasers. The Saito 125 looks like a perfect match for this plane and endurance wise we are looking at 12-15 minute flights with 5min reserves. Impressed to say the least.

THank you to all who have taken the time to post on this thread. I hope it has been helpful to you all and I hope that you all continue to post on it. I am sorry I did not finish posting the rest of the build. Perhaps I will be able to find the time down the road maybe in a few weeks. Life is hectic right now and there are alot of changes happening right now in mine so time is a premium. I will continue to monitor this thread and promise that I will eventually finish it!

I was going over my cub yesterday doing some minor maintenance..........my gear was coming loose from the fuselage..........as I started looking it over I was surprised at how much wear I have in the bolt holes.............WOW!!!!!.............this is nearly new....probably 40 or 50 touch downs total.
I'll be watching this gear a lot more closely from now on.....................

I agree the gear look nice, but they are absoulute garbage. I am thinking of contacting Robart, and trying to get the mounting dimensions for there gear. The whole problem with the H9 gear, is the fact they are running a bolt through sheet metal (Soft). The Robart are made of 4130 Chromoly steel, and have clevis pins running through them. Leave it to the Chinese to screw up a good copied design.

I hope it is OK to chime in here with a pic of my Yuma, Arizona Cub and ask for advice. This 8' Cub does not have the scale landing gear and the gear setup that is on the plane distorts with any kind of solid landing or swerve...poor tire alignment makes take-offs hairy. I find it necessary to completely disassemble the landing gear for re-alignment of camber, toe-in all too frequently.
I'm wondering if I could not build a more sturdy landing gear system based on the Robart plans......where would I get a bill of materials, build sequence, etc.
Has anyone actually scratch built a scale Cub landing gear system?
Thanks for advice or leads to someone who has built up a Cub landing gear. [email protected]

I sure miss the desert... It is -32 with a windchill of -46 here right now! I guess I won't be doing any flying any time soon.
Yes, I would get some pictures of your favorite design and then measure the dimensions of your existing gear. THen you could scale it to fit your airplane. Failing that, you cn see if Robart can supply you with new gear.

My landing gear is fixed now for the summer. I had my retired father machine four clevis pins for the pivot points. There is no slop now. I cannot believe that H9 thought that 8-32 bolts riding on the threads would not wallow out the landing gear brackets in short order.[X(] The pivot points are now 3/16 Pins just like Robarts gear.

RE: Hangar 9 1/4 scale Cub build thread...
Hey guys
Wonder if someone can help. I have the PNP w/ the Zenoah G20 and just got it out of the box! (I know, I know, but I had other projects...) Can anyone tell me how to get the cowl off it? I want to check the mounting bolts, fuel lines etc. Do I take the carb throat, or whatever it's called, off? Looks like I'll have to.
TIA
Al

Yep, you need to pull the velocity stack off the carburetor and remove the muffler. Then you can get the cowl off without any trouble.

RE: Hangar 9 1/4 scale Cub build thread...
I have been following this thread since I started to assemble my H9 Cub and the biggest problem I see is with the landing gear.
I replaced all the bolts with longer ones that allowed a shank to go through fittings and tubes and not treads. I had to cut some
new threads to bring them up to the outer fitting wall but now all I have is shank vs threads going through the fittings. I hope
this will help with the, as one poster called it, "egg shapeing" of the holes. I am using a Fuji 24 for power. One reason was that
the cowl does not have to be butchered up for the muffler as it is contained within the cowl with plenty of air space between it
and the cowl. I offset the engine slightly from vertical which further increased the distance between muffler and cowl. there still
has to be a opening cut for the carb.
Has anyone flown the Cup with a Fuji 24?

Could you elaborate a little on the paint job? ie how do you prepare the covering
prior to painting and what brand of paint do you use to get good adhesion? I see
there is no cutout for muffler!

Thanks for the info. Your cowl is basically identical to mine, with no ugly cutout on the left side
with the whole muffler hanging out.
Can you start your Fuji 24 by hand flipping? I can not and it has to be REAL wet to start with
ele. starter.

just scuffed the Ultracote both ways with a scotch brite pad. painted with Klass Kote. There is a small cutout for the muffler exit.

How well does the paint hold up?
Does it scratch off very easy?

Not sure if this is the correct forum to state this but I had a problem with my left main landing gear strut.
The Axel receiver was welded out of line so that the shock strut lined up two inches off the center line
of the right one. I called Horizon and in THREE DAYS I had my new landing gear, at no cost. This time
everything lined up perfect. So, I just wanted to pass alone my GREAT experience with customer service
at Horizon.
