The problem I had was too much rudder throw - I was fishtailing all over the runway during the run. By programming exponential to soften the amount of throw near neutral, the takeoff run became much easier and smoother. The other problem I had was that the retractable tailwheel was not perfectly centered, and I always had to fight the slight turning tendency until the tail came up. I thought it was something else (engine offset or rudder off-center), but it turned out to be the tailwheel. Once I got that sorted (centered properly), all was well and it behaved on takeoff perfectly. As mentioned in my earlier post, I would always have the flaps cracked down just a few degrees on the takeoff to provide a better stall margin (and soft field performance). Once airborne the flaps (and gear) came up with no tendency at all to settle back to the ground.

Navy_Flyer, wow, five years later, that has to be a record for me.

Thanks for the reply; maybe that will get me motivated to get going on the repairs mine needs (required because of a bad takeoff run ).

I recognize this is a very old thread, but I'm partial to old airframes and new to the hobby.

If I'm ever so lucky as to score a Staggerwing (either Byron or TopFlite), my inclination is to mount up the VVRC 40 twin.

Bet it would work well

Marksp, . I have a Byron stagger kit that I'm thinking of selling. Complete including retracts. PM me if you ate interested. They are very good flyers and would be great with that 40 twin.

Roy.

Finally picked up an unbuilt Byron kit w/retracts and ordered up the Saito FG-60R3 radial. Hope to have up before end of Summer!

These are such great fliers. There were a couple guys with them in my club when they came out. One friend still has a broken one as well. They look so impressive gear up on a flyby. That plane was so far ahead of its time with regards to style.

I had one yrs ago with a G-38. I could not imagine it with more power than that. It flew great and had plenty of power.

Wow, a 60cc radial four stroke; it should be a rocket. Mine was not slow at all with a Q-35...

yeah, multi-cylinder, gas, 4-stroke is a lot of moving parts and weight, so it's actually not a super power house. But it sounds and looks cool and my flying style is to loaf it about at lower RPM's to maximize the sound of the radial Should be fun!

An Evolution 7-77 would have been cool also.

Yeah, I'm kind of late to the game so it's gas only for me. Although I've seen a few post of folks converting the Evo 7-77 to gas. That would be cool!

O.S. 300FT in mine,,,, loved that plane. Had a gyro on rudder that solved the ground handling issue perfectly. Actually i still have that gyro if any one is interested, i would let it go for any reasonable offer.

Long shot, but here goes....

The rudder and horizontal stabs from my "complete" Byron kit mysteriously disappeared over the 6 months my project has been sitting on my builders bench. So now I've got an almost complete air frame and am desperately searching for these parts.

If anyone out there happens to have or know where I might find the rudder and horizontal stabilizers for the Byron G-17S Staggerwing, please help!!!

Cheers
