Default RE: Pacific Aeromodels 97

Finally got mine in the air...With engine box as far back as possible, 6V 1700mah battery behind wing saddle, 10AH Nimh ignition battery under cockpit, needed...35gm (1.5Oz) of lead on the tail - much better than I had hoped. Based on advice from another here who has EXACTLY the same set up, running a 21x8 prop, 20% nitro, 18% oil, when all cylinders are up, seeing 7200rpm. Balanced at 5-1/4"from LE. first flight - leapt off the ground and went up like an elevator - lots of down trim needed! No other trims needed touching. Throws all pretty much as per book, using the 'Normal' values. Motor has all the grunt needed - to me, it looked very scale, similar speed to the 85" version I have with a Moki 210, 22x8 prop.
Flys very nicely, just like the smaller one - low roll rate, but otherwise reponds very nicely to all controls, small amount of down inverted, so CG is good, and does a normal final approach, not really slowing as much as you would think for a radial cowl. All in alla very nice model, well behaved . Sadly on second flight I had too high an idle, it ran on a bit, dug in a wheel and psuhed the struct through the wing. No other damage, so it will fix fine. Found one of the oleo retaining screws coming loose, so these should be removed and re-installed with loctite. IIRC total weight was 10kg, or 22lbs on bathroom scales - had to get it inpsected under heavy model rules - over 7kg.

Hey Gents,
I didn’t realize that I had written in this thread two years ago. Well, I too just recently flew mine for the first time. The first flight lasted 20 seconds as my DA 85 cut off right after take off. The second flight lasted maybe 30 seconds as the same freakin’ thing happened. This time I landed way, way down the field into some tall grass and broke of one of the main gear. Got her all fixed up and ready for flight #3 but it didn’t happen because I couldn’t get my engine to cooperate. The deal is my engine is sucking in air big time from the tank. That’s ‘cause my tygon line is large; larger than the brass tubing. I use that line on my turbines. I just ordered some 1/8 size tygon which will give me an air tight fit. Hope to have some video for my third but first flight.
My engine is the DA-85 with a 28x10 twin blade but changed it on the second flight to a 26x10 3 blade. I have smoke on mine also.

Over size Tygon gets a lot of people in trouble. 1/8 th ID is all that you will ever need. Sorry to see so many non-scale colors being used, but I guess that's a personal choice thing. Mine uses a Cunningham modified G-62.

My instructions (the Happy Models knock-off of the 97" GBY) gave CG at 143 mm (5-5/8"), but after the first few flights I moved it forward (more nose heavy). 5-1/4" sounds about right.

Paco

I would check with Maxford USA, they are base in the LA area and are now selling the 27% Gee Bee Y.

Mine is flying perfect with the CG that I have, I will run to the storage today to get it off the side of the airplane ( I always mark the CG on all my airplanes just in case I need it later )

I have only flown mine like 20 times, it came from a good friend not to long ago, it's all dialed in now and it is flying really good, it's a V1, a one piece wing ( very strong ) the only thing I'm having problems with is that on touch down it bounces to much, I read some here that reflex on the ailerons was used to suppress the bouncing, anyone care to comment on this?

I have a DLE 60 Twin that I think would work great in the Gee Bee. Could anyone tell me the I.D. of the cowl please? It would be great if it would fit inside!!!
