Default RE: 33% Laser 200 on a diet

Started on a different way to mount the wings to the fuse. The stock way is to drill down from the top of the wing into the thin aluminum wing tube, then tap the tube for a 4-40 cap screw. The problem I see with this method is there would only be a few threads making contact in the thin aluminum wing tube.

The modified version I will be using I first read on one of Walt's (Known as BBW) threads. A true master craftsman....Among many.

First step is to build four mounting blocks for the fuselage. I used 1/4 x 1" 5-ply birch plywood. Drilled an 11/64" at the wings centerline, next I drilled out two 1/2" holes to lighten things up.

Next step is to mount the wings to the fuse. Use the same 11/64" bit and rotate through the center hole in the mounting block into the wing. This leaves a mark on the wings root cap.

Then using a small square I draw what will be the wings mounting block. Next, remove the wood exposing the foam core.

I removed foam from the mounting pockets to the correct depth using a router base on my Dremel. Next I made patterns of the openings and transferred them over to some more 1/4" ply. Then I temporarily installed the wing mounting blocks into the wing pockets, re-mounted the wings to the fuse and again rotated the same 11/64" bit through the fuse leaving marks to be drilled out for some 10-32 threaded inserts. The inserts are .300" o.d. (measured at the shaft not the external threads) So I drilled the holes to .300". Using an Allen wrench install the inserts into the blocks.

Next, I drilled some small dimples in the back of the wing blocks to provide more surface area for the glue to expand into. I also capped the bottom of the inserts with some balsa, you don't want the glue expanding into the inserts internal threads!!! Then it's time to glue and wait.

Here is a link to an old kit review of the 33% Lanier Laser 200 which is the same airplane as the Godfrey. Might be helpful.

http://webpages.charter.net/rcfu/KitReviews/Laser.html
Only the outline was the same. Lanier made it very heavy with the construction method and materials. Our original early 80's entry TOC Laser weighed 15.5Lbs with a Tartin twin and pipes. This model was Don Lowe flew it along with others in '82 TOC. Our new Laser 200 is 35% and with a D.A.85 and 24oz Of fuel weighs 21# and is close to the same wing loading.

Bob,
Your 35% Laser looks awesome!!!. The flight videos are incredible... Looks like another winner and I would love to purchase one except I'm saving for your 40% Godfrey 300

Finished the wing mounting today. I found these conical washers with a rubber grommet attached from the hardware store. I'm hoping that tightening the 10-32 bolts will compress the rubber backed washer creating back tension against the socket head screw, thus create a vibration proof connection. We don't wont those bolts vibrating out in flight!

That is really looking good. If you could take some foam out of the wing it would lighten it significantly. I had a large scale Ultimate Biplane that someone built, and they took some foam out of the wings. It made a lot of difference because the foam is so high density. I am not sure how much you could take out, but I would think you could do every other bay and be ok. I assume you are using monocote or something like it.

Thank you for the clarification. I knew there was a connection just not the details.

Glad to see a Laser 200 kit being reborn. I personallty consider it and the Extra 300 the best, and most predictable, aerobatic models available.

The first thing I discovered, the original builder had very limited building skills!!! In the first pic you can see how far out of square the cap strips were and what had to be done to straighten them up. Next, I removed every other cap strip and then went back and doubled up the remaining strips. I also added an extra 1/2" to the trailing edge.

Dick, the link is broken to this review. Do you know another path.

I just picked up a built Laniar Laser 200 33% and I know I've got a bit of work on the bird before it flys. I has never flown, but the Plastic turtle deck is loose and there needs to be some other thing fixed before I would trust it to fly. I would like to see some of the recomendations in the review.

It appears the pages containing the reviews is gone...too bad as there were 50-60 older kit reviews. Last one posted was around 2005.

If it would be helpful I can pull one of my kits and scan the instructions but it would be a stock build.

After I posted, I went back into the garage and looked at a couple things closer. There was a problem with the plastic turtle deck where it met the vertical stab. Turns out the builder didn't use the 3/8" sheet called for in the plans and the seam was without backing. At this point, I'm going to completely strip the covering, engine, and electronics and see what I have to work with.

I wonder if the way back machine could find the missing reviews. I'll have a look. Do you know the last time they were there to give me a search point?

I've got the instructions and plans, enough to fix what ever is wrong. Thank for the offer though Dick..

The reviews were still up when I posted the link here.

Wish now I had downloaded all the reviews and kept them.

Dick, the site is inactive. The Way Back Machine checks archives of sites and that is what I found.

Thank you so much.

I copied all the articles last night that I wanted.

What is the Way Back Machine and how do you find or use it?

Sounds like Back To The Future stuff!

Dick, just do a Google Search on the WayBack Machine. It is an archive of all websites and goes back several years. The base link is www.archive.org/ On some of the old sites, you may run into problems with bad links and missing photos, so it is not 100% effective. Sometimes you can hit the jackpot though, like we did on this one.

Dick, it Rocky and Bullwinkle stuff Remember Mr Peabody and his Waybac machine on the TV show?

I forgot to tell you, the center top of the home page is where you type in your website or page you are looking for. It should keep you busy for hours.

The problem is you have to remember/know the exact link, it doesn't search.
