Default RE: CESSNA 185 35% TMMY COMPOSITE

Just got a few more pics and update from Tommy.

The fuse plug is nearly completed, he hopes to finish it this weekend by adding the rivets. Then onto the mold, he hopes to have most things wrapped up in a few more weeks.
He will be sending pics of the wings etc. in a few days.

Attached are pics of the panel lines top, bottom and side of the fuselage.

I have made an adjustment with Tommy, I have asked him to send me the model in primer gray as opposed to plain white.

A few reasons for this;

1) It will speed up the delivery date, painting and cockpit detailing etc. will slow the process down. (Tommy has a few 182 builds on the go also).

2) If there is any damage in shipping ( I hope not !!!) the model it's easier to repair and paint.

3) Any additions are a little easier to add.

4) I do have the spraying equipment for the job.

Also, for those interested, I may have located a manufacturer in the US that will do a retract sytem for the floats. I was in touch with them before Xmas and they indicated that it was very "doable". I have also spoken to Ryan at Sea Commander who shares the same interest. I have to get some facts and figures to them before pursuing any further.

I will post the pics of the wings etc. when I receive them from Tommy.

Regards
Randy

Hi Fellows;

I haven't chatted in a bit with updates, I have been busy preparing for a "crasy" upcoming work schedule and sorting out a few glitches to the C-185 program.

Tommy wanted to move the cargo door a little forward in scale with the full size 185 and needed additional pics of the rivet detail for the fuse. All has been accomplished and back on track with the detailing then mold. (Mold next week, I hope).

I have also asked him for a projected completion date and when the model will arrive. He's ceratinly close, but it's always the small stuff that "burns" up the time.

I should be receiving pics from Tommy shortly re the fuse, wings and tail section.

Will be in touch.

Regards
Randy

Hi. I've been following this thread with great interest since the very beginnig! I've allways had a thing for the good ol' Cessna workhorses, especially on floats. It probably derives from the fact that I grew up about 500 yards from a seaplanebase Infact my first ever flight as a lad was in a 206 on floats. About a year ago I contacted Tommy to make me a 120" WS C-206, and last week I finally decided to go for it! He's hoping to start the build in March, and estimated 6 months to finish it. Can't wait!! I'm currently waiting for a set of Seacommander floats to float across the Atlantic to put on my ESM C-185, I guess I'll practise float flying on that 'til my 206 arrives!
For those interested, I'm also a full scale pilot with hundreds of hours in various Cessnas, no sea plane rating though

Hi Tor;

Nice to hear from you and congatulations on pursuing with Tommy and the C-206 build. Although I don't have any TMMY models yet, from what I've seen and what other people say he does do nice work and the model flys quite well. I'm really looking forward to the C-185 and getting underway with the build.

Nice that you have so many hours on the full size, it does come in handy from time to time when flying these larger models.

As you probably know, Tommy has a C-182 with a 120" WS that he is presently finishing some mods on before production. I'm sure it is a good "base" to work from when fabricating the 206.

I have a set of Hostetler C-206 plans from a few years ago (120" WS) , it certainly is a nice looking aircraft, never got around to building it. (Didn't have the time).

Ryan from Seacommander will do an excellent job on your floats, he also has a larger set that may be suitable for your 206. He made up a set for me for my C-182 120" WS model. If you are interested I can send you the pics of them.

Just a thought, I know you mentioned you have a ESM 185, if you haven't flown R/C floatplanes yet, it might be an idea to also pick up a trainer with floats to get some hours on it. I did that when I started, the models are very forgiving and give you a great idea of what float flying is all about before stepping up to the larger models.

You'll have to start up a C-206 RCU thread, I will be interested to see the progress once Tommy gets started.

Stay in touch.

Regards
Randy

Hi there Randy!

I'm planning on starting my float flying career with a Modelfly Cessna 177 Cardinal. It's an almost indestructable plastic model that is quite forgiving.
I did try my ESM 185 with the stock floats last summer, but I didn't have great success I'm afraid LOL! I'll definately get some float flying experience before I have another go with the 185, not to mention the 206!

I also have the Hostetler 206 drawings, but I've come to the conclusion that I'll probably never finish it if I start the build. The Tmmy 206 wil have the same wing, stab and fin as his 120" 182. It will however have slightly different flaps and ailerons like the full scale, and off course he'll need to make a new plug and mold for the fuselage, hence the 6 month fabrication time.

Are the floats for your 120" 182 the 66,75" flat top Edo's from Seacommander? I'd really appreciate some pics!

I most definately will start a 206 thread when things gets a bit on the way.

Cheers!

Tor

Hi Tor;

I'm having a problem uploading the pics on the forum. The computer seems to be slow today. I will try later. []

Yes, they are the flat top EDO's 66.75". We added a removable amphib system. I got busy on the C-185 build and haven't mounted them yet.

I wanted to fly the model on wheels first then floats. Model is ready to fly now, just have to wait for the snow to melt and warm up over here.

If you would like send me your e-mail address and I can send you more pics of the setup for the float conversion.

Another though re your 206 build. If you have a chance take pics of the full size 206 and the year you have chosen;
Tommy will use these when scaling the fuse etc. (unless he already has some).

1) Cowling, cowling shape, showing panel lines, rivets and landing lights.

2) Windshield if different from C-182, fuse door locations, aft fuse extention, panel lines and rivets.

3) Difference in the wings as you have already mentioned.

Stay in touch.

Regards
Randy

Here are some of the pics. Disregard the mess in the basement, the pic was taken shortly after we moved in.

Also attached is a pic of my "old faithful" trainer. Flown both on wheels and floats. So many flights, I stopped counting.

Hi Fellows;

It's been a while since my last post, but then again there was nothing to report until now !!!!!!

I know Tommy has been busy with other builds but is finishing up the detail work on the 185.
Great job so far from what I can see in the pictures.

Attached are some pics of the final rivet detail then onto the mold.
It's starting to look like a C-185.

Tommy says everything should be completed by the end of February.

Regards
Randy

Hi Tor;

Nice to hear from you, just back in from the north.

So far so good with the build, I'm really pleased, Tommy just sent me another e-mail confirming the build will be completed this month.
Just a few more rivets to the fuse then the mold.

I figure the month of March will be in transportation via ship and should arrive in Canada by early April !!!!
Air shipping too costly.

I would like him to send a pic when finished in primer gray and fully assembled, I will post it on the thread to give you fellows an idea of the final product.

Will be in touch.

Regards
Randy

Hi Randy. Tommy will start the 206 build as soon as your 185 leaves the shop!

Air transport is well expensive, I will go with sea freight also.

Hi Tor;

Great news with the C-206 build. Saw some really nice ones up north on the weekend on floats !!!!!

Looks like Tommy is on schedule starting your project in March.
You might find the modification may go quicker since he has experience with mine with the conversion/mods from 182 to 185 .

Stay in touch.

Hi Irvan;

Welcome back to the forum. Agreed, Tommy has done a great job so far from what I can see through the pics he has sent.
He will finish the model this month and be ready for shipping by March.

I have alot of the components already set aside for the build.
I will post the build on the forum.

Good luck with your flight of the large scale 185, let me know how you make out.

Good Morning Gents;

I just received my 5" Tru Turn spinner, they did a nice job on the cutting and fitting for the 30 X 12 3 bladed prop.

See attached pic.

Hard to tell in the pic. but the 5" is a little more scale.

I haven't been "bugging" Tommy too much lately, but will contact him this week, he should have the mold finished. (I hope).

Will keep you posted.

Hi guys

Just a Note to AVIATor-olav.
Be aware that part of the float kit on the full size includes a larger vertical tail and a longer tail cone. I don't recall if the vertical stab is enlarged, but the rudder is definitely larger. This is left on if it is put back on wheels. You might want to find the appropriate three views before construction starts.

How did you do the detail on the flaps, elevator, ailerons and rudder (the corrugations0?)

Thanks!

Hi Tasesq;

Regarding the corrugations for the 35% models the best person to ask would be Tommy.

I have done corrugations on smaller models using pre formed plastic "v"'s that were sold at the local hobby store.

Hi Tor;

I asked my son who works at a northern float base re the 206 larger tail feathers.

Yes, the rudder and tail cone are approx. 5" larger. It's part of the float kit for the 206.

Once installed it remains on for both wheel and float applications.

Has to do with stabilility and perhaps the ventral fin.

I'll try to get some comparison pics of the full size wheel vs float if they have them on the field.

Hi Fellows;

I haven't been on the thread for a bit due to work schedule etc.[]

Tommy has been busy finishing the rivet and panel line detail for the fuse and cowling. Although anxious to get this build underway I do appreciate the amount of time to properly place the hundreds of rivets on the 185.

Attached are a few pics of the final rivet detail.

Seperation of the cowling and fuse is to de done next then the final product.

Will be in touch.

Looks awesome Randy!!

Wow Tommy is certainly going to great lengths with detail. You certainly have to hand it to him.

I am very eager to seeing model in base coat white at least.

Hey Steve;

Nice to hear from you.

Agreed, Tommy has done a great job on the fabrication. We have certainly had alot of (e-mail conversations) re final tweaking and detailing.

As mentioned, although anxious to receive the model, I understand and appreciate the time spent on the detailing. All of those rivets that you see in the pics start with glue droplets on glass then removed with a pin then CA to the fuse etc.

A "ton" of work and effort to say the least.

Due to time constraints I mentioned to Tommy if it is not possible for him to base coat the model, then ship it in primer gray and I will spray the final base coat and trim when I receive it.

I look forward to seeing it all together.

Stay in touch.

Regards
Randy

PS There is a local "Fly In" show at one of the float bases in August, I would like to attend with the model .
Alot of 185 flyers attend.

Hi Guys;

Have been away on business for a bit.

Just received an e-mail from Tommy, the plugs where completed a few weeks ago, the molds are well underway and should be finished by next week.

Pics to follow when I receive them from Tommy.

Ryan from Seacommander and I have been busy working out the details for the floats.

I'm also deciding the final design and colour for the model.

It should be a pretty impressive "bird" on wheels and certainly on floats once "she's" all done.

Will be in touch.

Randy

Hi Fellows;

Just waiting for an e-mail from Tommy re the latest update on the 185. ( molds should be done by now.)

In the mean time I have been playing around with a few ideas of paint schemes for the 185.

No colours deceided yet , I wanted to get the design first.

See attached pics.
I will probably "tailor" my 185 around late 70's early 80's era.
