Default 1/6th scale F2G Super Corsair?

Hi guys,

I am new here to start with and if you find me at all, it will probably be in the RC sailboat forum, as that's pretty much where my interests lie. But my other great love is avaition and living in Lakeland, I get to go to several great shows a year, with Sun-N-Fun, RC Jets, and Top Gun all being held here...

But in airplanes, one of my favorites has always beeen the F2G Super Corsair, and a couple of years ago at RC Jets, someone had a 1/6 F2G. I think it might have been a prototype for a kit, as it hadn't been built yet. But since then, I haven't seen anything like it, and searching on the web, I find nothing anywhere. Is anyone familiar with this or do you know if it's available?

Thanks,

Kevin

Kevin, That would make a stunning model. The Super Corsair was put together with Corsair parts collected at the Chino airport by Steve Hinton and his crew. Even though it is listed as a F2G, some of the photographs of it and three view drawings don't necessarily support that. In fact, there is literature that states it started out as a F4U-1a. You should be able to kit bash an existing Corsair model and wind up with a great flying model. Dan.

Kevin,

Much has been discused on the F2G. There are Threads. I plan on putting one together some day in another life.

I know of no F2G kit.

Before the F2G was the Corsair. Many guys have built the F2G from Corsair kits. You could start with a Corsair kit.

I/6 is a good size.

There have been several Super Corsair models at Top Gun and the Scale Masters the last couple of years which I've read are prototypes for a kit.  Go over to franktiano.com and look through the pics from this year's TG event and you will see one of them.  It's bigger than 1/6 scale though.

That "Super Corsair" was in fact built up from the airframe of an F4U-1a and was not a F2G in any sense.

I'm not dumb enough to think that I am even remotely (no pun intended) qualified to fly something like this. My toys tend to sink rather than crash and burn. I do the occasional park flyer, and perhaps more in the future, but for now uh-uh... My interest is more in the line of a Corsair fan than an RC hobbyist in this case. I wouldn't mind one built as a static model.

I do remember that it was an actual F2G kit, rather than an F4u, though I could be wrong on the scale. They hadn't built it yet, so who knows. I happened to be out of town for both big RC shows here this year, though I did make Sun-N-Fun, so I didn't get the chance to look for it again.

Thanks for the help...

Here is the F2G that participated in the Scale Masters last year.

This one was at Top Gun just a couple of weeks ago.

Beautiful birds, both.  I am especially happy to see Bob Odegaard's plane.  She's an amazing bird in real life and I'm disappointed I missed seeing the model.  It would benefit, I think, from not having a wooden prop though.  Did you know Odegaard is restoring a second F2g to flying satus?

Yes, I've read about the second F2G that Odegaard has under rebuild. I believe it was orignally to be a static exhibit for the Crawford Museum but now has a new owner who wants it flyable. Can't have too many Super Corsairs in my opinion. As a point of interest, Odegaard no longer owns #57 but recently sold it to a collector in Arizona. Since I live in Arizona, and within about 45 minutes of where the F2G is now parked, I'm pretty happy about that! By strange coincidence #57 now sits about 100 yards from where the Champlin Fighter Museum used to be. For many, many years the ONLY place you could see a F2G was Champlin. That airplaneis now at the Museum of Flight in Seattle.

You say you do the ocassional park flyer. There is a very good thread over at RC Groups in which a gentleman converted on of the foamy Corsairs (I think the Alfa or Flying Styro) into an F2G. He did a superb job on it. I will see if I can find a link to the thread and post it for you if you like.

Regards,
Chad Veich

So that's why I've seen it racing at Reno; I don't think Odegaard ever raced it.  It shouldn't be allowed to.  I know that sounds ridiculous considering it's pedigree, but it's too rare a plane to risk like that...

My other favorite plane is the Travel Air Mystery Ship.

Bob Odegard was the only pilot to race #57 at Reno and that was during his ownership. Rumours have it that #74 will be raced by Mr. Odegard for the new owner when it is completed.
Luckily we are free do do as we please with our own property and the act of competing in the air races rests with the owner rather than the dictates of those with no stake in or knowledge of the operation.

I have been working on converting TF F4U into F2G (Racer #57) 60sz kit. It's not something i want to rush into creating as it's very unique aircraft in real life and i consider same for an rc model. Anyone knows where i may be able to find bubble canopy for it?.

That would be a beauty. Obviously, I must have been mistaken about what I saw. Either that or the company never went ahead with production of the kit. Whatever the case, I would truly love to see one in action...

You certain of this? The sliding hood may be the same but the forward wind screen certainly looks different.

Canopy looks fine to me, except where it mounts to the fuselage.

I have theH9 Corsair, which I'll be bashing into the F2G.

Thanks for those photos and that great line art of the side view.

Everything helps and all is appreciated.

Fairly sure of my source:

Society of Air Racing Historians

GOODYEAR F2G CORSAIR STATUS LIST

"
The rear deck was modified to accept a P-47D bubble canopy."

I've been called wrong before.

ergocentric,

OK, I have the H9 Corsair which I will bash to be the F2G.

Then what you're telling me is, all I have to do, to solve my canopy issue, id purchase theTF P47 Thunderbolt from Tower?

Tell me it's that easy.

Charles,

It appears to me that the sliding portion of the F2G canopy is a modified P-47 hood but the forward, fixed windscreen is not the same.

Chad,

You have a good eye, and I belive you are correct.

So, the back or sliding part of the canopy can be used. Agree?

Agreed Charles, the sliding portion of the hood looks good.  The front portion is different enough that, for my tastes, I would have to come up with a different solution.

You have the ability to make one from scratch.

In fact, make two.

I've seen a F-4 wind screen and a P-47 rear canopy used with very good results. I'll see I I can find the picture.
