RE: 33% Gee Bee Hostetler Build
My Gee Bee is still in the box, did not get to it this past winter. I am trying to deside what motor to buy and then I will start it. Looking at the DLE 222 or DA 170

RE: 33% Gee Bee Hostetler Build
Just started mine a month ago. Cut out the parts myself. Fuselage is coming along rather nicely. I think the rudder needs a few more ribs though to help with the sheeting and watch the alignment of the spar boxes. The rear spar box I installed needed to be repositioned because I installed it wrong. That was good for a wasted couple of days. I would now install them before the formers go on.
A couple of questions. Why is everyone talking about huge engines such as the DLE-222 when the plans say 4.4 to 8.8 cubic inches???????? Also, do you need fully functional flying wires because of the landing gear? Feel free to email me at [email protected] with any responses or questions.

RE: 33% Gee Bee Hostetler Build
Engine choice was based on posts from the Composite ARF’s 33% post on RCU and Larry Alles (look back to early post) had a DA 150 in his WH Gee Bee and he reported that the 150 was just enough power and wished he had more power. I am looking at the DLE 222 for the power and the sound of the 4 cylinder. Several videos out there with the Moki 210 and 250 radial engine. Love the sound but the $4999 price tag stopped me from that option. The DLE 222 is $1700 and I get the sound and power for less. DA 170 is my other option. I am looking for good vertical and want to do solid fast knife edge passes. Search Gee Bee with Moki 250 on You Tube.

My target weight is 35 to 40 lbs. I am modifying the engine box to allow the DLE 222 engine (longest motor) That way I can pick the engine after I get it framed up and have a good idea on total weight.
Do you have any pictures of your build?

xradarusa, Thanks for the pictures. Now that I can see the box I do not think I can get a 10 inch long 4 cylinder engine to work. Plenty of 2 cylinder engines to pick from.

RE: 33% Gee Bee Hostetler Build
Called up Hostetler today about the wing washout. He says that it should have 2 degrees of washout from rib W1 to W8. If you put the rib tabs in position where shown on the plans you will end up with 3.65 degrees of washout. We agreed that this was too much. This was calculated out both with a protractor and by using trig. So it looks like every tab has to be modified.
So my question to anyone out there is how much washout would you add on this Hostetler Gee Bee R2?? Any advice would be appreciated. Alex

RE: 33% Gee Bee Hostetler Build
All washout is is a twist in the wing. Negative at the tip.
Why can't you use the flying wires to "twist" the wing?
Are they functional?
I have no washout in this 1/5 scale Gee Bee Z.
My 1/3 scale Gee Bee Z, I can use the flying wires for the washout setup.
My 1/4 scale Gee Bee Z, still has a long way to go.

Charles,
Thanks for the pictures. Looks great. You might send along a few more if you have the time.
Hostetler says that the flying wires on the R2 are simulated. I have heard otherwise though. Plus after I sheeted the top of the right wing panel yesterday, I found that it won't twist one bit. Modified all of the rib tabs to allow 2 degrees of washout. That should be enough.
In an earlier post you said that you can produce graphics for the R2. I can't find them on your website. How much for the decals for a 33% R2 exactly as they appear on the plans?? I am interested. Thanks. Alex

Alax,
My advice for the flying wires used to make the twist for washout was incorrect. I forgot that the wings were not fabric covered.
Sorry for that foolish advice.
Yes, I offer graphics and lettering for all the Gee Bee's. Yes, my website lacks in many ways. Sorry about that also.
Send me a PM or email direct. I'll be glad to set you up.
BTW. I'm thinking of selling my 33% Gee Bee Z? I'm going to dig it out, assemble the thing and take a few photos.

Charles,
Found a phone number on your website and tried calling but it kept saying "the number dialed is not in service." Will email this next week.
What do people think about covering an airplane this large?????? I was thinking 21st Century fabric as I have had real good luck with it in the past.
I would consider painting but I can only paint outdoors. That is hardly possible up here in the winter or early spring. Even in the summer you have to pick and choose your days.
Here is a few pictures of what I have so far. Plenty of work to do yet. The Gee Bee is rapidly consuming the remaining space in a large two car garage. Alex

RE: 33% Gee Bee Hostetler Build
What size engine should go on this 33% Gee Bee??????????????????? I just can't decide and all progress has stopped. Keep it light and save some coin and go with a smaller engine. I have cut so many lightening holes in the tail that a 100cc engine would balance it. Or go with a 150cc engine and make sure it has enough power.......................much heavier though.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Thanks for the advice. From the attached photo of your cub the results turned out looking great. Plus I have used Solartex before with excellent results. The only problem is that garage is unheated and would have to wait for some warmer weather. But that is ok as I still have to find an engine.
Saul, that Moki 150cc radial engine is a little more money than I was looking to spend. Even though they are on sale, $3155 is out of my price range. Maybe if that lottery ticket I bought was a winner though............otherwise was hoping to find an engine at the Northwest Hobby Expo in February.

AMR has the DLE-170 for $995,
Turns a 32x10 prop and should make the GeeBee haul the mail. [link=http://www.amr-rc.com/index.php?path=content&SUBSC=engines&SC=engines&page=engine_info&piece_id=319&langue=en]AMR Engines[/link]

What a great looking project. Please keep posting the progress pictures and as much information as you can. I have these plans and this plane is on my build list after the cub is finished and the 35% Knight Twister Imperial. Now if we could only find jobs that would allow us just to work on our planes????

RE: 33% Gee Bee Hostetler Build
Alex,
I have lots of experience building and flying the Gee Bee R2, at 25% and 31%.
Your 33% R2 should have a MINIMUM of a strong 150. You cannot go wrong with a DA.
I will be building the Hostetler, eventually, and powering it with a 3W170 which reportedly makes nearly 20 HP.
I have flown the CompARF with a DA100 and DA150. The 150 was a much better match.
The Hostetler is a bit larger than the CARF and will benefit from the extra power of a 170, 222, or strong 150/157 size engine.
Having too much power in an R2 is not an issue... that is why we have a throttle stick. But too little power will make flying the aircraft disappointing, at best.
IF you have the money, a Moki 250 would also be ideal in the 33% R2.
The 150 would be WAY too little power.
