RE: 1/3 Scale J3 Cub Build
I found this steel store on-line. They have the regular steel tubing in the wall thichness needed for a very low price compared to the price I paid for the 4130 steel that I probably didn't need. Hope it helps you guys. https://www.speedymetals.com/c;)-8242-round-tube.aspx

Hi Guys, Will be starting my cub build soon, just getting all materials together. Was wondering if the 4-40 bolts called out on the landing gear are large enough? I would think 6-32 would be better for a 30 lb plane. Any thoughs? Has anyone flown with this gear yet? Thanks Don.

Misterbill,
I'm having trouble locating the front landing gear brackets, on the print there is no real reference to the bottom of the body. Can you tell me how you referenced these brackets. I also noticed that your brackets have a 90 deg. cut on them when you solder them on then yon shaped them like the plans indicated. Was this how you located the brackets, hope i've made myself clear.
By the way you must be a welder by trade those welds are 200% better than mine.
Any advice would be greatly appricated.
Thanks,
Wayne

Hi Wayne - yes, the reason I left the tops of the brackets flat initially rather than angle them as per the final shape was to ensure that they all lined up correctly.
That way you can ensure all the holes are correctly positioned in relation to the fus, as well as each other. On the plan I drew a line parallel to the fus bottom and used that as the datum.
Enclosed is a sketch that should explain it.
It's a simple matter to angle the tops as the plans indicate later with a Dremel cut-off wheel etc.
And no, I'm not a welder, but have by now done a bit. Thanks for the kind words. The secret I've found is a proper heat source. I now use a propane/oxy setup. Makes all the difference.
Cheers, Mike

Misterbill,
Thanks for the quick reply.
The propane/oxygen unit you referenced, is that the Bernzomatic brand that is sold at Home Depot and Lowes.
Also, did you use the .035 steel for the brackets they seem to be thin.
Thanks againfor the help,
Wayne

Hi Wayne - the .035 seems fine to me - especially as it has no real bending loads.
I started with the Bernzomatic unit - it worked really well for everything. However you have to make sure that you have a number of spare oxygen cylinders on hand as it uses them up really quickly. Must have used $50 or so in oxy cylinders doing the u/c. I've subsequently upgraded myself to a bigger more 'pro' unit - got one on sale and couldn't resist.
Cheers, Mike

Hello friends .
I am following with great interest this 3d because I also got plans Nelitz.
I wanted to ask you, where can I buy a round and square strips of spruce dowel??
In Italy do not find them and do not know what other type of wood used.
In addition I would like to know if I also find the square strips in the U.S.A. pictures from 5 / 16 x 1 1 / 4 or at least all types of wood used to build this airplane.
Thank you all.

Check the below thread out, it has much of the information you need. The short kit has laser cut parts such as ribs, formers, plywood parts but without the sheets, sticks and etc.
If you don't want to cut the ribs and formers out , it's the way to go.
Very good wood is used in the short kit.

RE: 1/3 Scale J3 Cub Build
I know I haven't been working on it for a year since I was doing the Molds for the classic pattern planes. I made 12 short kits and have three more in the shop waiting to be done. I am really getting the urge to build some of my own planes and go flying before I burn out working on all the molds that I have been making. I am starting once again on this build and a 1/4 scale clipped wing Cub that I am covering. I have finish the welding on the cab wing brace and the gear brace. I need to build the gear now or buy it. The wings and stab are all built and the fuselage is all that is left. Pictures are to follow. I have a satio 300 twin and an os 300 twin I was thinking of using in this plane. Have any of you Cub guys seen one?

Hi guys....
THanks for starting this thread. I've just received the Nelitz plan set and spent the last few nights pouring over them.
I'll have some questions before I get started. Looking forward to this one !
Regards,
Gordon
