I put my Hangar 9 Taylorcraft (1st version) together about 15 years ago. Used a 1.8 Saito for power and am still flying it.
Back then I was able to speak with Harold Hanson who was, at that time, the original owner of the real Jim Moss built Taylorcraft that Hangar 9 used as a model.
Harold gave me a lot of help with my scale detailing using the many 8”x10” pictures he photographed at his field and then mailed me. I had a lot of fun talking to Harold (by phone) as I was attempting to scale out my own version of his plane.
I just did a search for Taylorcraft N6115. Apparently Harold no longer owns the plane. N6115 had been sitting in a museum for a few years and is currently for sale at BullyAero for $57,500. One of the ads mentions that no avionic equipment is installed. Apparently it is/was simply a VFR, fly by the seat of your pants aircraft.

I bought a used Taylorcraft 20cc ARF locally last fall. Believe it or not, I'm its third owner! It's in excellent shape and apart from a bit of the paint flaking off the U/C and the usual missing upper struts from the stab there's not much evidence of it ever having flown much. I've been getting it ready for flying this spring - I can't wait to get it in the air! The C of G was way back at 5 1/8" so 16oz of lead later it's now at 3 3/4" as per the manual. Maybe 5 1/8" is why it was never flown much!! I've read through this thread from beginning to end and I must say there's some very useful tips and info. I do have one question regarding the two air inlets at the front of the cowl though. Has any one had overheating problems with the DLE30v2 engine (Xoar 18x8)? I'm wondering if I should just go ahead and reduce the size of those two inlets or just fly and hope for the best.
Cheers, Chris

Hi Chris,
I have a 4 stroke and it gets hot, I cut holes in the side vents using a dremmel and skinny wheel - didn't make much difference, so I moved the muffler and opened up the cowl to let plenty of air out. you could try your first 'discovery' flights sans cowl and listen to how it should sound, then fit the cowl and listen, if it gets hot upon landing it will be really hot. I fitted a baffle to the RH intake and left the left open to cool the muffler and engine, I'm thinking of baffling the area to direct the airflow over the 'hot' parts. (I looked at the cooling in a 1948 Stinson 1-1 scale my mate owns and got a few good ideas from that).
2 strokes run cooler than 4 strokes...Too...

Thanks for the info. It seems that the problem is with the four stroke engines, but I like your idea of flying first without the cowl to get an idea of how the DLE should perform. Plus it lessens the chance of a dead stick which hopefully buys me some time to get used to flying it!
Cheers, Chris

Flying the tcraft with the cowl off is a good idea.It weighs next to nothing and helps you with tuning the engine initially, now if you'd just put something decent in it like a saito 182 flat twin that would be hog heaven as you say over there

I couldn't agree more....there's nothing like the sound of a flat twin. I've a 120 Gemini in my Cub and it's purrfect!

Seven years old. Still amazed how fun it is to fly. OS 1.60 is just right.
Recently finished assembly and install of Sea Commander floats. Water taxi testing is complete. It's ready! I'm ready.....

Hey all! I just bought one used from a guy here. I am excited to get her up in the air and start doing some Old Time Aerobatics! Ive got a few repairs first though. It had a really hard landing at some point that bent the gear, broke the wheel, and did some structural damage as well. Even cracked the windscreen and side door window! Now thats a hard landing! I am converting it from electric to gas with a ZP-20 and swinging a 16-6 Master Aircrew prop. Currently have the fuselage apart and gear stripped for bending/repaint. Motor is being broken in on a stand currently and sounds great! Future additions include a smoke system and more scale interior mods. Stay tuned!

I have a ZP 20 in mine also. It flies great. That is an awesome engine. Very smooth. I am turning a 16 x 6 Xoar. I also have a 16 x 6 APC that I have not tried yet. Be careful with adding a smoke system and other accessories. This plane with just the basic equipment is pretty heavy. It needs a lot of nose weight.

If you can’t find a windscreen try making a templet from the one you have. Then get some clear plastic and cut one to match the templet. That’s how some of the kit plane windscreens are done. It won’t be exact but it should work.

Update: Weather is warm so I resprayed the gear/struts and decided to smooth and paint the firewall. This aircraft had been Elite powered and I am converting to gas. Had to plug other engine mount holes and other access/ cooling holes were patched. Next up is engine intallation and repair windshield and door.
