I use Dubro nylon steering arms (P/N 166) for my Walbro throttle arms. The nylon arm has a brass insert with set screw - works great. $1.70 each.

put the carb at 50% power, then set both end points to 50%, i have same setup, works good, you get full stick movement with 50% of the throw

I have followed this thread for some time and seriously like the looks of the plane my one nagging issue is how does it fly? I am not a big fan of flying a Cub and have some concerns that this is going to fly like one. Would someone, or several, please give me your experiences and thoughts on how this plane flies. I like aerobatics but not 3D, large powerful loops, good axial rolls, etc am I on the wrong path in continuing to look at this plane? I know it is an exceptional plane but maybe not my style of flying your thoughts.

Howard,
The Taylorcarft is by no means an Extra 300, Edge 540, etc. With a symmetrical wing the Taylorcraft performs aerobatics very well. It does not fly like a cub which to me is like steering a tug boat down the river. If you max out the controls as stated in the manual it does rolls pretty quick, tight loops, and it will knive edge very well. Plus the fact that it is a very nice looking plane and it performs as good as it looks. I'm sure you have watched the videos that have been posted.

I've read about numerous H9 warbird models having thin firewalls and firewalls attached with hot glue rather than epoxy. What is the firewall like on the Taylorcraft?

RE: It's here and Looks GOOD new Hangar 9 Taylorcraft
We;ve been overbuilding firewalls for years so it may come as a surprise that arf manufacturers don't indulge in it,and if it's the blue hot glue you speak of it's tough and does'nt go brittle like most epoxies i've used.Don't fuss about firewall thickness, you could hang a 350 chevy off of it,think about thatand fly it accordingly mate.

GBR2,
The firewall on the H9 Taylorcraft is 1/4" thick and will work just fine for most applications. It's not really the thickness of the firewall that fails. It's the big 4 strokes and poorly tuned gassers that shake the firewall loose over time. I've seen it to many times where a guy new to gas will bolt his engine to a plane and fire it up and think just because it sounds good and has good pull they must have set it pretty close at the factory. This is a poorly tuned engine. There are no factory settings. All gassers must be tweaked on to perform correctly.

If you have seen the gaps between the wood components on most ARF's, you know what I'm talking about. To me, ARF's are great and I love 'em, but sometimes they need a little strengthening.
Anywazzz........a great fix is to simply epoxy in some triangle stock. After having two firewall attachments fail, I'm a little paranoid now. So all of my firewall attachment points get beefed up.

Guys,
Speaking of firewalls .... and what attaches to them
I am pondering again getting one of those planes and have a couple of engines floating around here or,
RCGF20cc, G26 and JC Engines 28cc
I haven't read back through the whole thread but I'm wondering what sort of room there is in the cowling?
I take it any of those engines will do powerwise?
Would the 28cc fit inside the cowl without cutting?

apalsson,
All three of those engine will work fine in the TC. I got my DLE 30 to fit inside the cowl with no cutting on the cowl except for the muffler pipe that sticks out of the bottom of the cowl. I think the key in keeping it all inside the cowl is how far the cylinder and carb is away from the firewall. The further out the cylinder is from the firewall it starts to make contact with the air scoop and the up sweep of the bottom of the cowl. I used the stock stand-offs and had the prop hub extended on my DLE 30 so it just did fit. The spark plug cap sets inside the air scoop on the bottom of the cowl with about a 1/16" clearance. It's like fitting a Hemi inside a Volkswagon.

Thanks Zippi,
I guess the trick is to get the plane and see which engine fits best
The old G26 used to be in my old Taylorcraft and never missed a beat. It is the magneto version but reliable as anything I have ever had and reasonably powerful.

I second everything you said there joe although i've never had a failure. The last arf i built was a 55" cm-pro midget mustang and i fitted a 115 saito. On looking at the firewall backside there is a small 3mm ply plate hotglued to the less than 1mm thick fibreglass skin with the usual tangle of laser cut crossbracing that makes getting blind nuts on a nightmare.I removed all that bracing and laid a light layer of glass over the whole inside of the nose, works brilliantly and saves you hours of fiddling..PLUS it's fun giving your dremel tool a good thrashing as well!

Hummm, the engine backfired and loosened the spinner plate, chewing out the prop driver...
At least the engine 'feels' loke it has plenty of oomph....

I gather this is a gas engine?
Do yourself a favour and never run them in an airframe without the wings attached.
The wings help suppress or absorb the vibrations from the engine and your airframe will thank you for it
Good looking plane, BTW

I second that !!
Last summer I was breaking in a gas motor on a Hanger 9 Sundowner........wings off.
The fuse was shaking so badly it was walking across the ground. I was blaming the engine for the vibration until I mentioned the problem to a club member. He told me never run an engine with the wings removed.
With the wings now attached, it dampened out 80-90% of the vibration.

RE: It's here and Looks GOOD new Hangar 9 Taylorcraft
Apalsson,
Here is my H9 Taylorcraft sporting the JC Engines (RC Aero) 28cc. No side penetrations, however, a good bit of the cylinder head extends below the cowl. Due to the engines overall length and the rear carb configuration, it needs to be mounted 3" from the firewall. So it places the cylinder head much more forward then the G20 or the DLE 30. Mine also sports a Pitts muffler made by Keleo exhaust systems. It fly’s well on a XOAR 17X7 sword prop.

anthonymio,
Nice setup. Don't you just love those XOAR white props .
GBR2,
I don't think the G20 would have been a better choice, just a different choice. Everyones perception of quality and good looks is different so I guess it's whatever turns your crank.
Now lets see if we can get Hangar 9 to produce this model in a 50cc-60cc size.
