1/3 Scale Balsa USA Fokker D.VII Build
Hey sports fans! I started on this project December of '08. I waited until now to start the build thread because, quite frankly, I'm slow (2-3 years on large stuff), and frequently lose interest or available time. Well I'm hoping to break that trend on all fronts. Soooo without further ado, here goes nothing...! I'm going to show as many steps as possible. I've definately made mistakes along the way, and will point them out when possible. Hope it helps/interests someone.

More... Shaping the large curved lookout in the center of the upper wing proved to be as trial and error exercise. I broke the balsa pieces several times. Luckily I had extra balsa sheets on hand to rip some new ones. After about the 4th time at soaking (with amnonia) I finally just let them soay for over 24 hours, more like 72 or more. I was finally able to curve them without breaking them. Used my hand plane to get the taper shaped.

More... In the last two photos, you can see that the tail ends of the fuse sides don't line up exactly. This dumbfounded me as I was very careful to build one side over the other so that they would be identical. If I did make them mate perfectly, then the fuse would be askew. Don't know why, but whatever...

More... Somewhere along the way, I put one of the landing gear blocks in the wrong place, Luckily I hadn't thoroughly glued it in place, and I was able to remove it and put it in it's proper place. Make sure you study the plans carefully so you don't make the same mistake.
