Thanks I'll look them up tonight. I'm doing a full interior after a full scale PA-18A that belongs to a friend of mine. It is my first real "scale" build and I want to get the belts right!

Hello guys.
I have some difficulty finding some pieces of wood for my piper.

Can you tell me where to find these woods with these measures?

5/16 "X 1-1/4"

I need to build the wing.

I searched from National Balsa but I can not find them.

I ask for help because here in Italy we do not have these measures.

Thank you for your help.

And I ask you something else:

In your opinion how many meters do I need wood in sizes 3/8 spruce dowel to complete the airplane?

Claud,

Cut all my wood to size on my Proxxon mini table saw. So I could make it exactly the size I needed. But 5/16" is around 9mm, and 1 1/4" is around 32mm if that helps.
I didn't use spruce for the dowels, couldn't find any, but I just used regular hardware store hardwood dowels. 18mm or so should do you if that size is available where you are.

Hi Don - don't exactly remember - it was a while back when I weighed the bits for the cg, but it was in the early 30lb range.
Thanks for the kind words.

Hello and thanks for the reply.

Since I am only plywood 8 or 10 mm thick.

To get them in wood joinery I should go in and have them cut to size but it would cost too much.

According to you, you can also use the plywood 8 mm?

5/16 is actually 7.9mm so 8 mm should be perfect.

Google search for an inch to metric converter - it will help you. Here's one you could try

Ok I will use the one from 8 mm.

But the plywood is okay or should I use hardwood?

I assume the wood is for the main spar, that being said, plywood is not the best choice. Spruce or basswood would be the wood of choice. When you cut a strip of plywood for use on a spar, only half of the fibers are in line with the bending stress, the fibers that are 90 degrees from the bending stress add little to the strength. I would image popular wood is available in Italy? I thought that iswhere our lite ply originated, Italian Bending Plywood? I would use popular if basswood or spruce is not available.

I ask for help.

Is there anyone of you who can get me the spars for the wings?

There are 4 pieces of spruce but here in Italy nobody has the time and desire to cut!

I'll pay the labor and shipping ...

Claude,

Call Aircraft Spruce or order online....They can supply any size spruce you need. Another option is Wicks Aircraft Supply in Canada.

Hey guys. Love this thread. I purchase a used Nelitz cub some time ago. (Thought that it was a BUSA Cub). Lovely plane but has seen much wear and abuse. I am trying to rework it some and bring it back to a better state. Can someone post some pictures or details about how the wing secures to the fuselage. Not the strut attachments but the root rib connections. Particularly how are the hardwood spars finished off to be able to connect to the tubular cage. Mine has like a metal cap strip molded around the end of the spar. It is really buggered up and leaves a lot of slop in the fit. The rear connection is a dowel with a brass tube over it that slips inside the metal tubing. A hole is drilled into it and a wire slips through it to secure inside the tubing. Any pictures or help would be greatly appreciated. If I can get her spiffed up a bit I plan to put her on floats and fly her often at our local lake. Thanks for your help.

Hi I just received my cowling from fiberglass s. and started working on it and I noticed it was over a half inch wider on one side so I e mailed them and told them a bout the problem and sent some pictures , and this is what he said. [[ I can't tell what you are referring to. The cowl is what it is, if it's not
good enough for you, then you'll need to get it from someone else ]]
