Here's some pix to get you going Sir Crashallot - there's nothing really difficult involved here, just quite a fair bit of work, which certainly can slow one down some. And that's what one of the discouraging factors most likely is. There's no easy way past some of the stuff, no commercial suppliers, so one just has to knuckle down & do it. But isn't that what one of the joys of scale building is all about? Should be right up your alley, being from the land of 'men with sheds'!
I'm about to start spraying yellow, so I'll post more in a while.
Cheers,
Mike

cirtainly going to be an intresting build. Just been trying to find the length of the wing pannels and fus so i can start and measure up and price up materials to build a good enough work bench to build it upon, i dont supose you have any measurements in Feet or Inches. cant wait to see the painted fus

Ok, so the fus, without the rudder & cowl is around 6' 3", and each wing panel is 5'3".
And yes, I had to build a bigger bench too!.
Some more pix in the meanwhile.
Cheers,
Mike

Hi Larry - good to hear from you again. And thanks for the kind words - Bob's own Cub is an inspiration, and if I can get even halfway there with this one, I'll be thrilled. It is going well though, and hopefully Spring will see it ready to go. With any luck we can see each other at a scale do this year? Your Miles on RCC is looking amazing, congrats. Following that with interest.
Sir Crashallot - the span is 12'. If you don't have the magazine article that was published on Bob's build way back, I did post a pdf earlier on this thread, or the other build thread that is reference here somewhere. Otherwise let me have an email address and I'll send it to you. Not a lot of info, but sometimes anything helps.
Cheers, Mike

I am not building one nor do I have the plans but I took the time to search the web for you to answer your question about 1/3 scale cub wingspan, read the spec's below
Bob Nelitz's Giant 1/3 Scale Piper J-3 Cub Plans, Templates and Instructions
You are bidding on a new set of plans for a Bob Nelitz's Giant 1/3 Scale Piper J-3 . It includes the Plans, Instructions and templates/patterns for cutting the parts for this great flying classic airplane. Other plans are for sale too. I'll be listing them as I pull them out. These plans were drawn from factory drawings of the original full size. These plans are in perfect condition. All of my items come from a totally smoke free environment.Plans are shipped rolled in a mailing tube.
The Piper J-3 Cub is a small, simple, light aircraft that was built between 1937 and 1947 by Piper Aircraft. With tandem (fore and aft) seating, it was intended for flight training but became one of the most popular and best-known light aircraft of all time. The Cub's simplicity, affordability and popularity invokes comparisons to the Ford Model "T" automobile. Its standard yellow paint has come to be known as “Cub Yellow†or "Lock Haven Yellow."
Your satisfaction is guaranteed

Incidentally, here is the url of the other thread - there's quite a bit of useful stuff on it. It's entitled something like "1/3 Scale Cub Build" - no Nelitz mention.

Well my plan came today, got a few concerns... on the right at the bottom its showing the wingspan as 140 inch not 144. its definatly the bob nelitz cub too as it is the same picture as one someone on here put in there build log. it even came with the bob nelitz instructions which can also be found in the same log the plans in.
i hope im worrying over nothing as iv just orderd a windscreen and side and roof window kit for this model and am wanting to order the short kit and cowl, no point if the plans 4 inch smaller then it ought to beanyone got any ideas or can confirm this?

Hi J3 cubs have a wingspan of 35'2" or 3" depends on where you look, at 1/3 scale Bob's cub is right on at 140 7/8". Bob's cub is very accurate!! I will be offering laser cut metal parts. Will post pictures later. Pm me if interested. Don.

RE: Bob Nelitz 1/3 Scale J-3 Short Kit build
I am building the Nelitz cub from plans. All the wing material is cut. I have most of the dowels for the fuse cut to length and trying to decide where to start. A few questions:
1. How should I glue the fuse dowels? My first thought is epoxy, but I am considering titebondII. Any advice here is welcome.
2. What are my options for welding/soldering the 3/8 and 5/16 tubing. I can solder copper and I can arc weld steel but I have no experience with this size stock. I will practice on some material. What route should I go to achieve the best results.
TIA

Here's a build article I found here sometime ago, might be of help.
Be prepared when you purchase the silver solder, I just bought 3 troy ounces of 45% silver solder yesterday, $112, largely due to silver being at $30 per ounce.

I have been useing a nickel-bronze brazing rod that is used on british raceing car tube frames. Requires oxycetyleen tourch. Easier than silver brazing. It hasa a wider plastic range and is quite strong. Welding supply house might have to order it.

Hi - I used polyurethane for all the dowel work - worked like a charm, and sands reasonably easy if it's foamed where you don't want it to be. Sticks like crazy too, very strong joints. I used Elmer's but Gorilla Glue would be great too.
Silver soldered all the tube - there are pix earlier (post #139) in the other thread - http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_89..._6/key_/tm.htm
Cheers, MIke

Hello Sir Crashalot:
Where did you purchase the plans for Bob's Cub? The reason I ask is due the fact
that I have the original mylars, and decal sheets. I have heard that plans are being sold over the internet
and are copies with some distortion due being copied.
Regards Larry

Il be able to varify this when the window set comes for it, if its true and accurate then the templats on the plan for the windows should be an match of the set due to come.

RE: Bob Nelitz 1/3 Scale J-3 Short Kit build
ps i dont make a habit of buying plans offline. i enjoy building from my owm designs or a kit. just with time being around work 14 hours of the day i dont have time to sit and design, so after abt of research i found this was the best cub plan to build from due to bobs experiance with the full size cubs. kind regards Brent aka sir crash
