Default BALSA USA CUB 1/3 Scale

I am contemplating another kit purchase -I have been leaning towards the Balsa USA Cub-I know there has to be a build thread on one of these somewhere, I have seen the J-3 and it was really a nice kit-I know that 6 big ones is a lot of money but you get alot of extra stuff like: every hardware item is included; Socket head bolts, aircraft lock nuts, Kwik-Links, all scale fittings, etc. The complete 35 page photo-illustrated instruction book describes how to accomplish all scale details. The landing gear is exact scale in detail right down to the functioning bungee cords.

Kit Features
Full size rolled plans- five sheets. Step by step photo illustrated Instruction Booklet Name brand hardware package Scale Alum Panels with Scale Screws ABS Formed Interior complete with seats Scale Alum Instrument panel with Instruments and rings Exact Scale Landing gear with functioning bungee cord ABS Formed Cowl Formed ABS Inspection Covers Formed Clear Plastic Windshield. Molded basswood scale lift and jury struts. Accurate Jig cut Balsa and plywood parts. Exclusive Balsa USA Fall-out die cut parts. Scale steel fittings and brace wires. Scale tailwheel leaf-spring assembly. Scale Du Bro Main Wheels and Tailwheel Scale Decals (bears only). Fuel tank and more

The above was copied from Balsausa.com, I have priced various plan services as well as individuals cutting wood and selling short kits for several hundred dollars but the required added expense of hardware, landing gear, windshield, wheels and decals as well as plans having to be purchased -I am leaning toward this kit -what do you think? What are your thoughts?

From my point of view, the kit will be less than try to scratch build. When I build from plans, I always ended spending more than the same kit. So I would recommend buying the kit. I'm building a Balsa Super Cub that in painting as we speak.

Let's just say it's still going! There are a lot of bits and pieces to paint, working my way through.

I purchased the BUSA 1/3 scale Super Cub a couple of years ago and I'm in the covering and detail stage. If you like to build than you can't go wrong with this kit. I called Dave at B-USA just yesterday about a problem (not from the kit, but from my doings) and was treated with top notch customer support. You will not be disappointed. Besides, it's a big Cub, and you can imagine how much fun a big cub can be!

Thank you for the complements, the pictures were taken on the Bay of Green Bay right off Menominee, Mi. I do fly some WWI birds but my true love is flying off the water.

I noticed the Balsa USA is have limited run of the Super Cub per the website-it costs a little more but the kit is packed like the J-3 as well. I am stuck now on which one?

You will not be disapointed with either one. Both of my cubs are the J-3. I love both of them. I took my 1/4 scale that had only flown only on the water and made some skis for it so I could fly all winter long. What a blast

Never flown off of snow-I have flown off of water with 1/4 scale Hangar 9 Super Cub and it was a blast-How is ski flying? Does your plane keep sliding or does it handle like it is in taller grass?

My opinion is the Super Cub gives you more options for scale appearance since the cowl is wider and allows for more engine choices that fit inside the cowl.

I have only flown off the snow once. There was about 2 inches of fresh snow so it was like flying off tall grass. I bet when I fly off hard pack that I will probably have to kill the engine to stop the plane. I agree with Tony about if you want a true scale looking plane the Super Cub offers a few more options, but I like them both. I build more of a sport scale airplane

Hey there Wild Bill...

Am thinking about picking up a BUSA Cub and putting some skis on it for this winter....did you "self-fabricate" the ones on your Cub and if not where did you purchase them?

Bill
