Thanks Kelly

Thunderbolt,
Precision Cut Kits has the Chipmunk plans. I talked to Larry,at precision Cut Kits, last week. He can sell you plans that are enlarged to the size you want, but will not cut out a kit from plans that are not the original size. Your post caught my eye because I was looking at that same Chipmunk and decided to build one. My plan was to enlarge it about 12% and put a DLE 55 in it . I thintk the original is a little too small for a 50 or 55. The down side of my plan is that I will have to fabricate my own cowl and canopy since the stock stuff will not fit. I am not sure why but I have been very interested in the Chipmunk lately. I have been reading and researching about Art Scholl and his Chipmunk on line.
What size Chipmunk do you plan to build? Would you use fixed gear or retracts? At different times Art Scholls had both, so both are scale. I thought I would go with fixed gear. Good luck with your Chipmunk!

Hey Jim, I've talked with them too, but they were wanting 350 buck to in large them to 40% scale (148" ws). That's is little steep in my book. I can get the plans (3 sheets and inst. booklet) for $75.
Then it will cost about another $75 for enlargement.

I too will have to make a cowl and canopy mold. I've never done that before, but I have friends that have. Plus I've been reading up a lot on both technics.

As for the which plane. I'm going to build a hybrid. It will be a single place cockpit. (smaller canopy to vac. form)

I still haven't decided on flaps yet. That will depend on the plans. I'm planning on a three piece wing. (breaking just outside of the landing gear.) Just looking at pics of the plane, I'm guessing it wont work like I want it to.

No retracts. I'm going to have to machine some gear struts for it, however I will (I think) mount them so retracts could be added later. Retracts that big would also be a lot of $$$
I have the tools to make stuts, but retracts would be a little out of my shop tools league.[8D]

I thought I would try to borrow a set of plans before I bought them, but it looks like I will be ordering a set Monday.[&o]

I will know a lot more about my build later in the week.

Thunderbolt,
$350 is incredible! I thought they would enlarge them for a nominal fee. I guess not. I may have to go the same route you are going. I will have to call them and see how much they want for the size I am interested in.

When the lady I was talking to told me $350, I believe I used a dirty word.[X(] (Not a real bad one). I couldn't believe what I had heard. I was thinking $150 to $175 would have been a fair price.

Anyways I'll order a set Monday. Have fun with your build.

Guys,

Apache Aviation in the UK make excellent Chipmunks, - I believe they are based on the old Ohio designs.
I have built both their retract version of the Art Scholl Chipmunk and also the Pepsi. There is an old build thread from me in Kit Building describing the Pepsi build.

Contact them, the owner there is Mike Clewes. He is extremely helpful

Ok the plans are here.
Question, If the plans are 20% of full scale does that mean I enlarge them 20 more % to get 40%?

Or would it just be easier to double the plans. 162" w/s. I can handle bigger.
