Beautiful Job on the YMF. Makes my 1/5th scale look puny by comparison. I am building a 1/4 scale version based on the Pica kit (blown up) this winter. Looks as though I'm going to need to look into the Barth version instead. Keep up the good work.

I've got one of Peter's 1/4 scale YMF which is similar in construction to your 1/3 scale. It's about 3 days away from being ready to fly, but it won't fly until spring unless we get some warm weather in Minnesota. There is another thread that SoCalSal started on the 1/3 scale. Steve's been extremely helpful answering question for me.

Dick, I have the Genesis version sold by RCShowcase. It is a much faster build but not as detailed. Once finished it is hard to find the differences.

Hi Redcesar,

Thanks you read my mind. just bought this kit on ebay and it arrived last week. Please post or send me as many photos as you will take. I will be happy to give you my private email. I would be interested in a few questions. I have still to do my basic research before I can begin to build. Which Waco will you copy and where diod yopu get some detailing info (or a real one to look at !) What wmotor ill you put at the business end and what decisions have you made about control surfaces, servos and linkages. 1/3 scale is a bit bigger than I am used to although I have built many kits up to 1/4 scale. Any help would be very gratefully received and by the way your build looks first class,

thanks,

Phil (Barlingbomber)

LOOKS GREAT, did you change the tail feather mounting system? I have built the same kit and I noticed some changes in your construction of the rear area. Anyhow you are doing a great job on it. Wait till you fly it, so easy to fly and a crowd stopper as well.
I flew mine at a local Veterans Day Fly in and took the "Peoples Choice Award" . This was the first contest I have entered in ever.
A viedo (kind of poor) is posted on this web-site of that days flying. I was trying to do some 3D flying with it but the Waco is not to good at this and either am I.
Keep up the good work, it is worth it.

Hallo Steve,

Yes i now about your "Peoples Choice Award", i have seen the pics from a good friend and flying mate of mine "Kris" he lives a few blocks away from me..
He show me your pics and video and i must say it works verry stimulating to finisch the Waco before spring.

I have also your pics in a dir. and used them a lot for help me out.

And for the tail, yes it was not transport freindly so a make some mods, i send them also to Peter Barth and he give me some advice and points of taking care.

Oke Steve i will s.o.'s best regards to Kris.

Hallo Phil,

Okee i wil keep up with pictures, at the moment not so much because i am sanding all the parts i have build so far.

I will make mine like this one....see pic

I wil put at every control surface a high torque servo directly with a short pushrot.
For the the elevator i will build them behind the fairing in the tail. Also in the wings for each ailleron a servo.

Only for the rudder i wil take a big scale servo HS-755HB for example with a close loop wirring system.

If you have questions mail me [email protected]
or ask here.

Try this link for the originals

Hi Cesar,

That's a lot of sanding! Thanks very much fôr the info. I see another builder has the ailerons hooked up to a high torque servo in the lower wing only. What are your thoughts on that since you have chosen to put one on each? You may be aware but Peter Barth now puts a plan for your tail mod in the instructions althoug he has a disclaimer on its reliability since he has never built or flown the mod. Looks solid though and probably makes transport easier. He suggests another mod for removable undercarriage too, I might try that one so the model fits in the back of the station wagon,

best regards and keep me posted,

Phil

Hi redcesar.................Nice work of your Waco build. I have built the Pica version but in the 1/6th scale. But I'm anxious to build the 1/5th. although I don't have that kit yet. It was quite a challange and enjoyable to build. I test flown the Waco in 2005, and it flew quite nicely with no bad habits. I did'nt build it as a full scale. I ommited the wheel pants and had the power plant mounted vertical. This was my first Waco so I was not spending the time to build it as scale, it would be a shame to auger in something like this.
I have some difficulties getting the "WACO CLASSIC" decals for the tail. I have searched around without luck. I would like to have some made in vynal if that is the best way to go. Do you know of any source that supplies Waco Classic decals ?
The 1/6 is the baby compared to the one you are building. It is a very enjoyable flyer. It has a Saito .91 4 stroke. The covering is 21st century fabric.
Charles.

Hi Charles,

Nice to hear that your model is flying without any bad habits and good luck with the building of the 1/5 scale Waco.
I was thinking if you have the layout of the decal in jpg or cdr format maybe you can send it to a printer that can print it on sticker material, i have done that before.
Cesar.

Cesar,

I wish I would have put the servos in the tail, I had to add 18oz to the tail to balance out the G62. I haven't maidened mine yet, and won't now until spring. Two weeks were spent trying to identify the source of interference which now looks like it was the electronic ignition going out. Should have the engine back this week.

Phil,

I used separate servos on each aileron for reliability. While I was building the plane, I had a connection come apart on a servo on another biplane that also had four aileron servos. If that plane only had two servos, the plane probably wouldn't still be alive.

Garthwood

Attached is a picture of the Waco Classic decal that came with the Peter Barth kit. I would think you could get someone to make a decal from the picture. I can email you a higher resolution picture if you want. Just PM me with your email address if you are interested.

Peter Barth give you two choices, with two servo's in the lower wing you must instal contra weight attached to the four ailerons.
And with a strong servo for each aileron is that not necessary.

ORIGINAL: Barlingbomber
You may be aware but Peter Barth now puts a plan for your tail mod in the instructions althoug he has a disclaimer on its reliability since he has never built or flown the mod.

The mod that you mean in the manual is not the mod i have done, so as Barth suggest is it one peace with the elevator and rudder in one, that is 110 cm wide.
I have made, so as you can see on the pictures, only the two elevators removable, the vertical rudder stays on the fuselage.

Regards,
Cesar

Hi Chuck,

Wish I would have put the servos in the tail, I had to add 18oz to the tail to balance out the G62.

Have you build also the waco 33% from Barth? If so than i am amazed that you with the use of a Zenoah 62 must put weight in the tail.
18 OZ that is 510 Gr. extra in the tail that is a lot.

Is it the 33% Waco from Barth?

Cesar

chuck l 12-17-2006 02:24 PM

RE: Buiding pics Waco YMF-5 Barth Modellbau

Cesar,

I built the 1/4 scale Barth Waco. The G62 was converted to EI otherwise there would have been more weight in the tail. To accommodate the weight, I built a platform under the turtle deck that the 18oz weight was attached to. I used buckshot and epoxy to make a rectangular shape, and screwed it to the platform. (In case you don't know buckshot are small lead pellets used in shotgun shells.)

Thanks again.

Cesar ..........Thanks for your suggestion, I'll probably do that. Chuck is kind enough to send me a decal to work with.

I will continue to watch this thread regarding your Waco building. I've noticed that you modified the stab, you are using aluminum tubes to attach the stab. Can you explain how you you were able to keep the stab incidence constant ?. I am not familiar with the Peter Barth's Waco plans.

Charles.
The tubes that i used fit precisely into each other. I mounted the outher tube with two saddles solidly on the platform were normaly the stab glued on. I also glued two outher tubes into the stab parts then with an inner tube i can asemble the parts together. With the flying wires on the stab to the fuselage it will not came of while flying.

Cesar...............thanks for the explanation in pictures, I really like that modification. I have seen the YAK with stab tubes and using bolts to secure both stabs. Your stab looks better secured, then what I've seen in large aircrafts. Big engines have more vibrations.
Nice pictures.

Charles.

Cesar,

thanks for the info ad quite right about the mod. I didn't take the time to study your pictures yet. Looks probably better than the tail removal. are you you considering making the undercariage removable too? I agree on your analysis of the aileron and I like the point about survivability in case of an aileron failure. That seems to be the way to go.

thanks,

Phil
