RE: 33% Gee Bee Hostetler Build

ORIGINAL: RichardGee

The M6 is OK, but the full scale Gee Bee used a modified M6 reflex airfoil, considerably thinner... I believe 12% of chord.
This does NOT lend itself to good handling and unless you are a stickler for perfect scale, I recommend the Hostetler airfoil shown on the plans OR another well-known (for excellent flight characteristics) semi-symmetrical airfoil.

The actual R1/R2 airfoil is a 65% M-6 airfoil (@ 26.5% scale for a R2, this works out to a max airfoil thickness of just over 1"). From the research I have done, this is considered a "stable" airfoil when used in the correct manner and flown correctly.

Oh that's good news, yes I actually used 65% of the m6 at 26.6% for the Hostetler plan. Thanks for the info.

i used the airfoil provided on the plans. Its still a toy airplane to me .I wantit to look like the realdeal when doneand i dont think anyone will think its a cessnabecauseI didnt use the originaldesign. :)

Back to building, I finished the rudder this weekend and fitted it to the plane.not so easy. all my fiberglass stuff came in also. now it time to put the major parts together and have a plane! the cowl is so big its not even funny. I dont think they make a engine big enough to fill it. (radial)

got some build time in this weekend. Landing gear and tail wheel are on , rudder hinges done and I started fitting the elevator hinges. Hes a picture of the first assembly of this monster from yesterday.

On a cool factor from 1 to 10 that is at least a 12! Very nice!!:D

Hi Guys, been a while since i have posted, changed my username, heres a few pics of mine, finished only hours ago! Built largely according to plan, made flying wires functional though, to help with the loads on u/c. Covered airframe using epoxy/glass and solartex combination. Power is DLE 170.

Sweet :)I have a Jack Devine 50cc on the back bench,,, just looking at your plane just may motivate me a little.

Will post flight report asap, soon as enough courage is gathered. I Almost gave up the build, but the more i did on it, the more i wanted to see it finished.

Where did you put the CG ? I just did the CG check on mine with a DLE 170 up front. A CG at the front of the front spar as per the planes took another 4# of lead on the fire wall.

Thanks Don
