hello, Its been a while since anyone has posted here. I have to admit im cheating on my build. I developed some reaction to ca glue and the kicker just knocks me on my a.... I sent out my fuselage to a local hobby store for the sheeting . ill post the build progress as I am starting up on it. Myfull size radial engine building/collecting hobby as taken up way to much time and money so it back to small scale stuff for a few months.anyone else have a build going?

Hi,

Sorry to hear about the reaction! I'm about to start work on a 33% "Z" from Hostetler. Please do post some photo's of you build, it's the inspiration we need to keep building.

cheers
Ahh yes I have the 33% plans and a burning desire to build this bird. I have two 1/4 scale projects and a Nosen Twin in the works just now. Hope you do a build thread on this plane as I would be very interested in subscribing. I plan on trying a 3 axis gyro on my Z.:D

I have everything framed up and the small stuff (tail parts )covered. there are old pictures in this tread. ill repost a few when i get her back. its a really big plane. barely fits in the back of a honda element. will not fit with a cowl on it. it didnt seem so big in my basement. :)

Got the plane back from sheeting. looks great! he did a amaizing job. I ordered the landing gear and glass parts yesterday. Hoping to do some building this weekend.

I got my new landing gear from sierra today. look awesome. how do you guys mount them? they have 6 small holes on the mounting pads. do i just use small self tapping screws into hard wood or drill out and bolt them into the wood? any thoughts?

RE: 33% Gee Bee Hostetler Build

I am not building a Hostetler, but intend to. However, having built and flown several Gee Bee R2 models, I can guarantee you that you simply cannot go overboard when designing and mounting your landing gear! Gear MUST be mounted rock solid into hardwood that is braced beyond any doubt - I would use carbon fiber reinforcement. You should use the largest BOLTS that will fit into the mounting flanges and the gear should really be braced with functional flying wires.

ROCK SOLID gear are the KEY to successfully landing your Gee Bee and to its long-term survival (oh, and EXCEPTIONAL pilot skills:D).

My little guy found the landing gear. ran them all through the house last night., got the wings done and sent them to get sheeted. moving right along...

holy ...... awesome. we need more of this!! thats just sick. you need a real airport to fly it!!

Absolutely, you've done any awesome job there. Looks an absolute treat. If you have any video that would be even better!

Unfortunatly it has not flown yet, a bit of a problem getting engine started. This is a real airport (Wurtsborow Airport, Wurtsborow,N.Y.), I have use of the hanger and runway (concrete or grass ) when ready to fly.

Have you guys building this plan thought about or considered using the m6 airfoil that the full scale r2 used? Does anyone know why Hostetler used the Airfoil used?

I'm using the M6 airfoil on my 1/4 scale version. The COmp-Arf uses the M6 airfoil as well

RichardGee 04-29-2012 07:01 PM

RE: 33% Gee Bee Hostetler Build

The M6 is OK, but the full scale Gee Bee used a modified M6 reflex airfoil, considerably thinner... I believe 12% of chord.
This does NOT lend itself to good handling and unless you are a stickler for perfect scale, I recommend the Hostetler airfoil shown on the plans OR another well-known (for excellent flight characteristics) semi-symmetrical airfoil.

My R2 is from a set of Haffke plans 1/4 scale increased to 1/2 scale

RE: 33% Gee Bee Hostetler Build

I built a Hostetler 1/4 scale R-2 and used the M6 modified airfoil. The Gee Bee book I have said the full scale was 65% so when I looked at the M6 airfoil I adjusted the thickness to 65% of what it was and came up with an M6 that is 1 1/8" at it thickest point. I was just wondering how it will fly. I also built 1% of washout into the wing and moved the stab down to the scale position. I had to round the top of the vertical fin some and redid the stab completely to the scale shape. Hope it flies well.
