I tell you air systems make me want to scream lol I hate running all the lines and trying to make them look clean. Its getting there, all the gear and lines are done so the only thin left is to add the air tanks and mount the UP-6 valve in the nose.

On a good note I got a new tool in the shop, I learned a loooong time ago with RC heli there is something to be said for the right tool for the right job and this little thing is well worth the few bucks I spent on it! Behold the perfect cut airline cutter!!!! Good night folks stay tuned till next week Cheers!

I got the nose wheel steering servo hooked up and it looks like 10mm from the center of the servo gives the max travel you can get. I hooked up the gear to some air cylinders and did some videos of the function finally. I must say I am a bit worried, the nose is fine and the down swing on the main gear is fine. The problem is getting them all the way up and to not hang up, for some reason the lock cylinder isnt pulling the support arm back over so the gear can fold on the left main. Both main gear only go about 75% of the way up, so if the doors were to close they would hang up. The gear really needs a looooot of air, I will probably go with two large tanks. Just a not I hooked the air tank up to each 2-way so it was getting the best it can with air flow. Videos are uploading

Keith,

Did you fit the cockpit yet? it looks like your air valve tray will be level with the RIO's cockpit floor. You might what to fully fit the cockpit first to see what room you really have in there. I had to mount my valves outboard in that position to make it fit.

I also used a button valve on the left hand forward rail, my locking cylinders for the canopy did not always work in conjunction with the canopy air ram. You could also use another electronic valve instead of the button valve, your call.

also, I saw how you mounted your nose camera pod and liked it. mine simply bolts on, but I opened mine up to I could put lights and lead for balance weight inside. its a good spot and easy to get to. I did an initial W&B and added weight, I will add or remove once I have a final configuration.

Yeah I was worried about the cockpit, I mentioned that in one of my videos. If need be I can move the to the side and rework that tray. I dont suppose you know the best place to run the wing servo wire? With the wing sitting flush the only place to run the wire would be in the forward section but I dont know if there is a open channel in the wing. I see your from Mobile, do you fly with Rob and Billy? They are some fun guys to hang with!

On a build not I am not happy with the main gear function with air it will not go all the way up, that last little bit were the gear rotates level. I may looking to hydraulic the air system just isnt smooth enough yet to trust, I will keep working it.

If anyone wouldn't mind post a few picks of how they installed their cockpit and how the did the exit hole in the wings for the servos leads I would be very thank full. I hate knowing I have to butcher something I paid a lot of money for to install it. I am also going to recommend to folks to assemble/paint the cockpit yourself. The pictures on SM website showing these nice looking cockpits is not what you receive, may try one of out cockpits out later once I get the jet flying.
The gear is going to need to be taken apart and all rotating areas cleaned of any paint and greased, the mains are hanging up even with one hooked up to its own air supply. I am going to move on once I can get motivated again and come back to the gear once everything is done. I did manage to clear the channels for the rudder pushrods today before calling it.....I think I need to go fly some, that always seems to motivate me after I get burned out from build so much. I was hoping for this weekend but winter just want let go and its going to be cold this weekend..... Sorry for the delays on the build folks......

Hello Keith

Thank you for all your good Videos!Very helpfull

The Cockpit is very tricky

Cut all Sideboards and install them seperatly.
Make l profilepieces on the Sideboards and mount the Floor on them.
I think ist the best Way for easy install

Fred

Stang, I see the way you describe as the common way to install it. Having to cut up a 300.00 dollar cockpit after its painted and assembled is not cool but its the only to get the thing in. What I am wondering is how people are mounting the floor/seats, they need to be removable so I can get to my air fill ports. If I cant come up with a way I may have to move my fill ports and pressure gauges.

I do have the gear tanks and all the airlines ran, the only thing left is the sequencer but until I get the cockpit im going to hold off. This way I can see what room I have to work with, heck I may have to move my entire setup. Next thing I am going to work on is hard mounting the battery backer in the nose, then I can mount the two air tanks for all the other air items. Im going to see how the air usage it with having gear doors, and brakes on one system, if it is an issue I will just add a small tank for the up6 valve. The UP6 valve doesnt use very much air.

Video is uploading

Got started this morning on the mounting of the power system, I just cut four 1/2 in square blocks and drilled a hole in the end for the mount screws and hysol them to the back of the front bulkhead. This gives me plenty of room for battery placements for CG or other items. Im planning to mount the other two air tanks back in the fuse above the inlet ducts and the gear door sequencer/failsafe just aft of the power system. After that will be the two air gauges back somewhere around the fill ports. I am trying to make everything I need to fill the air stuff easy to get to when the canopy is open. The co-pilot seat will need to be removable for filling the air systems since I already mounted them in the same area, screwed the pooch on that one LOL

Well the battery backer is in and so is the control box for it. I went ahead and cut up a 300.00 dollar cockpit, this will result in a complete repaint after everything is fitted and trimmed. Mad as hell about this in case you couldn't tell.
So this leaves the brake tray and the sequencer to mount and then everything will be in minus some wires ran and pressure indicators. Once this is all done and the cockpit is in I will finish up the rudders and wings to complete the build.
A small video is uploading as well
its Shock Top time!

I like where you put the 2018, that would have never donned on me. Pretty impressive that you put three mechanical valves on one servo! You have a lot of patience!

Thanks Drsoles, what patience I did have the cockpit has used up and then some, I spent all day working and only got some of the front bucket done, next time I will ask them to just not send the cockpit assembled or painted since you have to butcher it. I am using a small carbon tubes cut to the lengths needed as cross tubes to support where needed. The back seat is going to be a pain!!! the only fit issue is my UAT fuel lines, they are in the way so I may have to move them back some. I am finding the hot glue gun very useful holding things in place for trial and error. It works great on assembly of the cockpit, CAs and epoxies seem to still break loose. The heads up display turned out great and looks much better than the stock, the instruments that go under the dash are hideous and super heavy so I will be making my own. I did the same to my Avanti cockpit and it turned out much better. The good thing is now that I have seen what kind of room I have I can finish the equipment install and just be working on the cockpit and ordnance. I am running out of time for MS jets and I still need to get the Avanti in the air and not having a local place is a pain.

You have a spare nose section right? If you are willing to send it to Alex at Iflytaillies, he will make a complete cockpit kit. It would be drop in if they had the nose section to go off. I told him I would send mine, but its in storage and not dying to break open the boxes, I just remembered you have a spare, saw two in one of your pics. I think the guy is much closer to you as well. If you are interested, drop Alex an email. that would be a huge service to all of us who own the kit!

Sorry for the long delay on a post,

Looks like you are on track for the cockpit, doing what most of the others have done. Mine is split like yours with small magnets to keep it in place. It is a REAL pain. My cockpit was so badly done it was disassembling itself anyway, was going to need a full rebuild. Mine is in as a placeholder. I plan to do a new, better cockpit later once it flies.

as for servo wing wiring, most of the pics i have seen show it routing in front of the wing sweep pin along the curved contour. You might check the other SM F-14 thread, that is the direction I am going with my S-Bus wiring.

Have fun, Hope to have mine ready as well for MS AB. We will see....

Cool deal, thanks for posting, I like the magnets. I have some and may give them a try, I was going to tack the sides in with hot glue. Super strong and removable but well see once I to the final mounting. As for the wings, im doing Sbus and was going to mount in the area you described, the plug will be forward of the pin. Im hoping to get mine ready as well but quickly running out of time, I still need to test fly my Avanti as well. The goal is to fly them both in two weeks but well so that leaves me a bit for anything that pops up.
Bill, I dont suppose your Robs friend that owns the Mig?

As for the build I spent the evening fine tuning the sides of the cockpit and checking clearances, I did have to move the UATs back and shorten the fuel line. I also had to move the front seat forward about a inch, and just before I called it for the night I made the mounts for my sequencer and glued it in just aft of the battery backer.

Hey Drsoles, I was thinking about that nose thing it will not do him any good to have just the nose. He will need the nose with the landing gear in it so he can make the cockpit clear the nose when it comes up.

And last but not least, can anyone tell me what color the real f-14 cockpit is? For some reason I thought it was all black in side but some pictures show a gray color around all the instruments. The Russian blue color must go LOL

The way you have installed the cockpit answers a lot of questions for me. I went ahead and installed my powerbox and some valves first and later realised they will all need re locating to accomodate the cockpit. Great thread Fenderbean. Now i am motivated! Tom.

No problem, this is exactly why I do my builds, to help folks and have fun. The only thing you need to do if you add your valves in the are I did is make sure they are far enough away from the center, this is the lowest part of the cockpit in the back seat. It take a long time and im still not sure how to secure the seat in the form since the nose gear is below it and I cannot make a hard mount with magnets like im going to on the co-pilot seat.

well small progress today working installing the rest of the air system, things like the fill ports and pressure gauges. I installed the other two air tanks above the inlets in the fuselage just forward of where the main gear is..... tomorrow I should finish with all the air items and then I need to make a few leads to connect the ECUs to their throttle channels and all the air valves/servos to the battery backer. I am locating the fill ports, data terminal plugs and pressure gauges underneath the back canopy cover so when the canopy is closed everything is hidden. I did this to prevent having to take the back seat out every time I need to fill the air system.

I have a small video uploading, I feel like I have ruined the build videos on this build by not showing more live building. That being said everything is so confined and hard to get to if I did this the videos be extremely long and very hard to work without a third hand. So for the folks watching, I will def do more live build stuff on the next project. The next one will not have a time crunch so I dont care if takes me a year LOL Cheers!

well after much effort and great pains the air system is in and the only thing left is to mount the pressure gauges. I mounted the brake system to the side wall like I always do and after all this I pray for no leaks. Air systems on this level are a pain!!!
Now that the cockpit and air things are done I can finish up the build this weekend by jumping back to the rudder and wing rod/control horn install. Once this is done, the f-14 is done except for final setup just like the Avanti. I will have to move everything down to the garage and get the turbines ran up and prep for maidens. Im still working the site to test fly, I am hoping to use a small airport about 40 mins away but well see. I have a lot to do before MS Jets, the trailer needs some new tires and I have to make a small trip to get a new project.
Cheers!!!

Well finished up the air install today and on the first power up of the system the gear valve servo locked up. Never had a servo do what this one did, I couldnt even move it by hand after the power was removed. It did free up but you can feel the servo motor is done its very hard to rotate and will not do anything. So I pulled it out and will send it back to dreamworksrc tomorrow and hope the next one works good.

I have a video uploading as well, cheers!
