FOAM JET Power plant comparison: EPO EDF vs. TurboFoam(tm) Turbine Power

Foam based airframes have become very popular in the Electric Ducted Fan(EDF) jet models. It's strong,
durable, and easy to repair. However, many conversions of EPO based EDF Jets into true turbine are not
successful due to:


1. Rigidity and stiffness: They are too soft and flexible. Turbine jet models normally travel at speed higher
than EDF Jets, have higher inertia and wing loading. Due to its softness and light density, the current EPO
Jets are mostly suitable for lower speed flying and are less reliable due to flexing materials.


2. Heat and Fuel management: Turbine engine produces exhaust temperature exceeding 900C. Without
proper design of intake and exhaust system, and heat management, it would have a risk of melting the EPO
foam. Jet Fuel - normally Diesel, Kerosene, and Jet A are used. Some foam materials are not made to resist
corrosion from this type of fuel, resulting in dissolving the airframe and components.


3. Size limitation and Wing loading: Size does matter. To achieve high speed flights, in excess of 120 MPH,
a strong turbine is needed. The current market size EDF jets are too small for the most popular 6KG + thrust
(13 lbs+) turbines made for composite jet.


4. Aerodynamic design differences: For performance, EDF jets pushes same amount of intake are out to
generate thrust. Internal ducting design is crucial to the overall performance of the EDF. Most EDFs normally
have thinner inner structure layout to maximize the thrust while turbine versions don't need large intakes or
modified intake to achieve the necessary thrust. Therefore, turbine power can be more scale looking without
cheater holes or enlarged intakes. For sport jets, turbine powered jet can have smaller intake for reduced drag
and maximum internal space needed for carrying more fuel


5. Realism: Sound, Smell, and Flight Performance: Nothing compared to real Turbine's noise, the smell of burning
jet fuel, and realistic flight characteristics of full scale turbine jets. This is the pinnacle of RC aviation. You are flying
a REAL JET. Nothing is as close as a real jet.


6. Power and fuel management: EDF has constant power source - batteries. Battery are rechargeable and don't
change weight whether it's empty or full. The weight of EDF jet does not change throughout the duration of flights,.
Turbine version can carry more fuel for longer flight time and it gets lighter as the fuel is being consumed during the
flights. The constant reduction of weight makes turbine jet easier to fly.


7. Cost: Most EDF Foam jets are designed to be park flyers and the components are normally chosen to reduce
overall cost. To convert it to a turbine ready, you would have to replace, modify, add or remove many parts and
components that will increase the overall cost comparable to a full composite version. Also foam jets are small and
require smaller engines in the range of 1.5 to 4.5 KG thrust that are harder and more expensive to build. Smaller
turbines require higher precision building, higher RPM, higher pressure on smaller parts resulting in cost higher
than larger turbine. This is a double whammies and results in higher cost for less reliable foam airframes and small
engines.


8. The foam advantage: Foam materials are widely used now in park flyers, EDF jets, because of the low cost. The
electronic components such as electric motors, servos, power boxes, batteries are all commercially widely available.
They are gradually replacing the conventional wooden planes in the small scale models. Foam components can be
produced quickly in molds and requires a lot less labor than that of wooden or composite airframes. All in all, it has
the advantages unmatched by the traditional wood planes or composite construction. If done successfully, foam jets
can be a solution to the high cost barrier for turbine powered jets.


9. The "Foamie" look: Foam has large grains and can be easily chipped away, dented, compressed.

10. Composite airframe; They are widely used in Turbine powered jets for it's rigidity, strength, and weight. They are
mostly suitable for larger jets 10KG thrust and up. They are mostly manufactured by hand at lower volume and can be
expensive due to higher material cost, labor cost. Regardless it's costs, it's the best materials for high quality, high speed
jet applications, resulting 99% of current jets made of composite materials.


Due to these reasons, the Foam based turbine powered jets haven't become popular until Now.

EDF jets, large scale warbirds, helicopters, and some low end composite jets. Replacement parts are molded and available
with cost of replacement similar to that of high end EDF jets. The long term affordability is better than EDF per flight. At current
energy cost, the fuel cost is about $1.5 per flight based on a $3.00/gallon diesel or kerosene fuel cost

quality jet kits are in kit form and require professional builders months to build. It normally costs jet pilots $$$ thousands of

hello

I have got one kit of F16 GREY turbin jet HSD foam 1800 mm.
please give me advice if I can use K85-G2 of KINGTECH TURBINE engine 880 gram for this kit.

is it heavy than design?
or the balance is not good for gravity? head is too light? how to adjust weight for better gravity point?
