Angry Problems with Glow to Electric Conversion

Hi,

Long storey short. I'm replacing an OS 108 two stroke in a fun-scale Dynaflight PT - 19.

The motor is 5535-10 KV=230
Running on ten cells
Prop size recommended 20" to 22"
I'm using a 21x8 prop

I first used a Turningy 120AMP Speedy. It lasted about 6 flights before there was a loud pop followed by lots of smoke.

I replaced the speedy with a Hyperion Atlas 90 AMP opto
This combo runs to about 3/4 throttle then emits a loud screech and stops. If you close throttle and open again it works to about the same throttle setting.

Hmmmmm I though and tried another motor albeit 280KV with exactly the same result.

I've checked solder joints, timing, throttle delay and am about to check into a mental institution or go back to glow.

Does anyone have any helpful suggestions?

Many Thanks in Advance

How many amps does your Wattmeter tell you it is drawing? If you don't know that, you are in the dark. The 280Kv motor would draw a lot more!

The stopping and restarting after closing the throttle suggests an issue with the battery/LVC.

What happens if you reduce prop size?

Hi Til,

Thanks for the tip. No lenght is unaltered. I've arranged for one of my mates to come over after flying on Sunday and he will put his Watt meter into the circuit and see what the draw is. I'll let you know how it goes.

Many Thanks,

I think your timing is off, have you programmed the ESC to the specified timing of the motor?

Hi,

Thanks for the tips. Health issues brought testing to a halt)(&*&^)(. I'll get back to you all when I've been able to check the Watt Meter.

Cheers,

Have you tried higher timing?

EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT ELECTRIC POWERED FLIGHT
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_7100376/tm.htm

If you are going to put together custom combinations of motors, props, ESC and batteries you MUST have a wattmeter. Otherwise you have no idea what the system is doing. For what that ESC cost you you could buy a wattmeter.

Borrowing one if fine but get one for yourself if you will continue to put your own power systems together. It really helps.

Thanks for the advice,

I'have purchased a Watt meter but spinal surgery has/is keeping me from my work shop for at least another week so I have yet to start the investigations. Very frustrating.

Cheers,

Spinal surgery? Ouch! Speedy recovery!
