Hustler Trainer to Electric help
Hi
I've been out of the RC world for 10 years and getting back into it using electric.
I ripped the old Glow engine out of the hustler we flew and put in a Astro cobalt 25 with 1.7:1 gearing. It flies with a 12x 8 prop for 5 minutes flat out but,
I have trouble trimming to stop it rolling right. I suspect I do not have enough down and right thrust as I built it with none when I mounted the motor (as advised - I think they thought an astro 25 was a little speed 300 motor). With full left aileron trim it flys well.
Can anyone enlighten a little further as a chop to the front to reset the angles of thrust is major but I'll do it if that is necessary.
Yes I have checked the wings and elevator and rudder and minimal twist etc that is in the wings would not produce the amout of roll that occurs.

How is the motor mounted? Can't you just slip some washers under/behind the motor mount to give it the necessary thrust offsets?

I have enclosed the front forming a second firewall that the motor and gearbox sandwich upto.
Packing washers isn't efficient as only 2 screws are used in the astro gearbox.
More important, what is the level of side and down thrust??
1, 1.5 2 or more degrees??

Therin lies the rub. You have to experiment with side and down thrust until you find what works best. It's different for every plane... I doubt you'll be terribly pleased with having to tear apart and rebuild your plane several times to get the right offsets.
How about a wedge between the motor and front firewall? All you'd need to do is elongate the mounting holes in the firewall a little.
Start with 2 degrees right and down, but some trainers need more.
