This was an interesting experiment. It is a stock prebuilt Senior Telemaster. I used a Astro Flight 40 with Superbox gear unit from a previous project. 16x6 prop and 24 of 3000 Nimh cells.

Take off was in about 80 feet. 15 degree climb angle (medicore estimate at best), flew for 10 minutes with enough left to make a couple of fly past maneuvers before landing. It could roll and loop, granted not big loops but they were loops indeed.

Flying qualities were faultless.

I changed it to glow because I wanted the fire breathing performance that a OS 1.08 will give it, STOL capabilities, etc.

I have also flown a full size Buzzard Bombshell with an Astro 050 with regular gearbox. 10 cell 1700 Nicads. It is a gentle but good climb to altitude and thermals. In this case the motor stays. It is perfect for a no hassle, quiet and fun flying session.

I've done similar experiments where you can fly a large plane with less power due to the enormous wingarea. It is fun just to see what you can get away with, especially when aerobatic performance isn't needed like in many scale historic models.

There are other techniques that you can use to increase the performance further. Some cost good money while others are not so bad. For example, you could replace those 24 cells of NiMH with Lithium cells and probably drop 1-2 lbs. You could get more power for your current draw by using a Hacker C50 Acro, MaxCim 13Y, or Aveox 36 Series brushless motor. Lastly, you could use an Inner Driven gearbox and gang 2 motors together driving a single prop which would allow you to use a bit smaller motor but have more output power.

I converted a Sr. Telemaster years ago. I have an old Keller 100 in it with a 2:1 belt drive turning an 18" prop. With 27 cells, it has enough power for aerotowing.

Could do even better with today's brushless motors...

I built the same plane this summer. I'm now using it for Aero Towing! My setup went like this: 20X10 prop. Mega 22/30/4, Inner Demmon @ about 4:1, 21 cells Nicad sanyo 2000's and 24 cells GP3300's. Here's some Pic's.

More prop, more prop! Which 16X6? Need maybe a 16X8 or 16X10 APC-E or even 17X10.

There's an Astro 40G powered Senior around here that is no slouch at all - I think also on 24 cells. Any idea how much current you were drawing?

Hey, me too! Senior Telemaster, Aveox 1817/4Y, 30 cells (Liftzone.com article in a week or so).

Spins a Zinger 20x11 cut down to 18" at 5600 through a 1.6:1 belt, drawing 40.9A (measured, not MotoCalc) from 30 GMVIS 2400's (or an APCE 20x13 @ 5900 & 40.5A).

Pulls up 4m sailplanes quite comfortably.
