Hey Longarm, that sounds great! I used to live in Jax but that was long before I started RC. Watched the vid, P51 flies nice... how bout the P51 on point with two Corsairs, one off each wing. Now I'll have to build my Corsair so I can bring it on over there.

Default P-51 stuff

Nice video. I have that plane in the box still...its one of my winter projects. I bought it and a World Models P-51. I decided to build the WM P-51 because it didn't look as good and I wouldn't mind breaking it as much. In other words, I'm using the WM as a trainer and will go whole hog with the H9: flaps, CJ pneumatic retracts etc. Of the two, I think the H9 looks a little more scale than the WM...except for the tail group. Actually, I bought the retracts for the WM, but they fit the H9 much better. The H9 will be about a pound lighter, so I'll be going with the AXI 4120-18, HM 77, 5S4P and 14x10 APC TE...or something close.

On the WM, I'm using an AXI 4120-18, HM 77, 6S4P and a 14x8.5 APC TE. Unfortuneatly, a friend smoked the motor on the maiden flite and it nosed in...nothing serious though. He held WOT for about 5 minutes with a fresh 6S4P 7800. It flew great for a while, too bad we didn't get to see it land properly. The batteries and ESC were less than 110 degrees when I retrieved it. I didn't have a spinner on it so that didn't contribute to the problem. I wanted to check the heat after a couple of minutes...oh well. One thing that I'm concerned about with both P-51s is the huge spinner not allowing the motor armature to get sufficient cooling. Any suggestions? Randy, our guardian angel at Hobby Lobby, replaced it free of charge...it came in today.

Heck I wouldn't know how to fly off a hard top, I've been flying of grass so long. As for formation flying, when I get in the air everyone lands...wonder why?

I saw your post about the retract servo locking up...too bad you lost Marie. Did you try to repair it? Didn't look that bad to me. All it needed was a new forward fuselage. I'd love to give that one a shot...hope you didn't trash it. I would have been finished with John's Corsair, but I couldn't always use CA and UF and Epoxy takes time. It'll be flying soon though. Looks like it will be on of those 10' models. (Looks good at 10')

I can't say for sure, but I saw John's (flyanything) Corsair fly with the 4130-16, and it appeared to be a good setup. The P-51s are about the same size...weight and wing area. It definietly had the power. In fact the torque is what did him in. My best guess for a 4130-16 setup would be a Jeti 70 (or better), 6S3P and a 15x10 APC Thin Electric.

I have a 4130-20 (17x10) that I fly in an 11 pound 90" Cub that flies great. The biggest drawback with the 4130-20 is that it takes a large battery pack (20+ sub Cs or 8SxP). As for my P-51s, they won't see a 4130-xx because of the weight issue. The 4120-18 has plenty of power and is about a half pound or so lighter.

My P-51 has the 4130/16 in it with a 6s2p Tanic pack....5100 Mamp.........The previous Mustang I had was the same motor and ESC, but I used 24 GP3300 batteries to power it because of cost. It was 10lbs, 11 ounces and flew very nicely.........not as good as the 8lb, 8 ounce version that I have now with the Lipo power source, but it flew very well at the heavy weight..........It sure crashed hard though.......

P-51B, look at the video.

http://www.mustangone.com/images/H9P51.wmv

That is my 2nd flight.........It is a tame video due to having 12 to 15 mph winds during the flight and my camera man / editor got the "tame" sections of flight very well. My few aerobatic / speed sections, he couldn't keep up with the plane well enough for the video........

Complete setup: AXI 4130/16 , Hacker Master 77 3p opto ESC, UBEC, Tanic 6s2p pack 5100 mamps total, 16/10 APCe prop........Flys very scale and has plenty of power for my taste.........I get many compliments on it.

Nice video. I'll have to really ponder for a while.

By the way, I keep seeing the term Tanic show up. What are Tanic cells? Are they similar to Li-poly? Brand name? Reference to Ti-tanic?

Default RE: JETI Advance Controllers

I flew the P-51 two flights on Saturday and she flew very nicely, I am getting used to how easy she flys and I am starting to really whip her around. Scale flying with rolls, loops, inverted, doing the split S, etc., and then I really make her look like I have lost control and begin doing spins and inverted spin dives. When it gets close enough to the terra, I straighten her out and pull out of the dive.

One thing bad happened Saturday though, I had a Lipo pack begin to bubble up. One of my 3s2p packs started swelling and I could tell immediately that I was losing power. I landed and inspected the plane and found the problem. The Mamps was taken out to around 3100 of the possible 5100. The other pack was fine. Three of the six cells in the "Fat" pack were swollen, the other three looked normal size.

Ok........Bragging On Great Customer Service Time. I called Jeff at E-Flightline.com..........(Splash on the E-Zone) and told him what happened. He promptly tells me to send them back and the problem will be examined and a replacement pack will be shipped ASAP.......No Questions Asked..........

Now that is great customer service. If anyone is about to make any lipo battery purchases, or wants something that E-flightline.com carries, I would strongly recommend giving them the business. They are a great bunch of folks that goes out of there way to help you, recommend setups, and will make sure you are happy with your purchases. They have really treated me right.

So, how would one safely send back swollen packs?

The best way you can..........No way is absolutely safe unless you ship them in a fire safe. The "bubble" has gone down somewhat close to normal size. I bubble wrapped them and secured them in a stout box and shipped. Is it perfectly safe? No. But what can you do to make them perfectly safe, dont buy them.

When they are brand new and shipped it isnt safe then as well. Boxes are thrown all the time in the shipping companies and that is not good for the batteries....

I was just wondering, since these are obviously damaged.

But normal disposal of a damaged or old pack is to puncture and submerse in salt water for several hours...but if that was done they may not be able to analyze the failure.

Default John's Corsair lives again...

ORIGINAL: bird-shots

John's Corsair will fly at least once more...and soon. You see he sold it to me the other day...at a weak moment...and I'm almost ready to install the motor. I'll be using an AXI 4120-18, HM 77 ESC, 14x8.5 or and 6S4Ps . This is the same setup that I use on my 9 pound .60 size World Models P-51...which by the way flies great.

Well here's the before and after...that's John. He sold me the carnage for $30. After a little bench testing I changed from a 6S4P to a 5S4P. The AUW is 8 lb 5 oz.

Default RE: John's Corsair lives again...

Thanks for the kind words. I'm a better builder than pilot. I took it to the field yesterday and taxied tested to check the stock retracts and to see if it had any bad tendencies. I think it probably taxies as good, if not better than any of my planes. I have the Robart struts like yours but didn't want to install them until I saw how the stocks performed. To make a long story short, I flipped it on my first flight. I got up about 3 feet and a 90 degree cross wind, coupled with additional pitch left due to thrust, was more that anticipated...I decided to land and try in calmer conditions. Anyhow, it landed but it flipped...only a tiny rudder ding though. Think I'll wait until Ivan passes through before giving it another shot.

I haven't decided on which 3 blade to install. Since I'm running a 14x8.5 APC TE, I suppose a 13x8 or 13x7 would do. I was thinking about an adjustable pitch, like a VariPROP... Any suggestions on brands?

I like the tough look that my Graupner 3-blade glow prop has. It also disguises the electric conversion until take-off. I have had many surprised looks this season at the local shows.

If you have an unlimited budget, Harley's custom is just awesome looking!

Hey Longarm, we have to wait 'til I finish building the new one I have in a box. BTW, another guy in our club has a OS 90 glow powered H9 Corsair... flies good. When mine is done we will have 3 of them at our field... enough for a mini Black Sheep squadron! Speaking of hurricanes... here are some pictures of the EDF I assembled during hurricane Francis.

Hello Greg:

I love all the info you have supplied, thank you. Would you have a complete parts list to convert the F4U to electric, along with the vendors. I know through the threat there is information, but I don't want to forget anything. Direct to me is [email protected].

Hi Garland,

Here is a link to my review on the [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/article_display.cfm?article_id=319]Hangar 9 Corsair[/link]. It should contain everything you need.

Good luck!

Hey P-51

Never puncture a lipo pack. To dispose of a lipo just dunk it in salt water overnight. Then it is safe to throw away.

John

Noe: I just saw that Polyquest recommens to puncture the discharged pack.

Greg in your review it says you were going to use a 6S4P 1500 pack but I don't see any results. Have you flown the pack ? what kind of flight times do you get with the Lipos ? I am sure the lighter weight made a difference. Thanks

Yes, I used 3-cell Kokam packs in a 6s4p configuration. It works great with a flight time around 10 minutes.

You can also use two of the 3s2p ThunderPower 4200 packs in series. This has worked well for me with an AXI 4130/16 motor.

Next season, I may increase my pack capacity by using a 6s5p configuration of Kokam 1500mAh cells. The H9 Corsair flies light much like an overgroan parkflyer so the extra weight won't matter much.

Kokam will also be coming out with 3.2AH packs this Winter in configurations up to 6s3p for a 9.8AH capacity at 180amp delivery rate.

I am going to use the 4130/16 and the Graupner prop on a scratchbuilt Fairey Firefly it has 646 sq. in of wing area and rtf weight with 2 x 10 cell 3300s is 9 lbs, by switching to the TP 4200s I can save quite a bit of weight. I am going to compete in some scale events and need to make 3 flights of around 8-10 min. each but the Lipos take a long time to charge and having 2 sets is a big chunk of change.
