Papillon?
Hi,
I managed to find someone with an unbuilt Papillon kit. This was the first R/C plane I ever built, way back 25 years ago. I want to convert to electric.
The wingspan is 46 inches, wing area is 275 squares, and design weight is 19-23 ounces. I have a Speed 400 motor that I've never used for anything else, so I thought I would use it.
Which props can I use on it direct drive? And, how many cells do Y'all recommend?
If I put a 3:1 reduction unit, what props?
Also, what GWS units would work well?

RE: Papillon?
This sounds like a perfect Speed 400 conversion.
If it were up to me, it would be illegal to run Speed 400s on less than 8 cells. 8 cells gives you the best power out of the 6V, and 10 on the 7.2V. More cells on either is going to shorten the motor's life.
Prop options for direct drive include the venerable Gunther Spoon (aka Zagi) prop, 5.5x4, 6x3. However, this sounds like a slow-flyer, old-timer style plane. You'll want a gearbox. With a 3:1, try the 10x6 or 10x7 APC thin electric prop.

RE: Papillon?
Hi Batjac
I'm looking at doing the same thing!! I built a Papillon about 15 years ago. Reed valve .049. I ws going through some old plans the other night and thought I might build it again. I have a Speed 400 as well, connected to a 6oz 1100 NiMh battery. I was concerned about the weight there. Can you tell me how it's going?

Think about a IPS dual motor drive with 4.1:1 gears and a 8060 prop. Will give you about 7 ounces of thrust on a set of 1200 mah e-tech's. Motors will draw 4 amps or so.
Keep the weight to under 21 ounces and she should fly well.
