Default UCD .46 conversion completed

I dont know what it is about the Great Planes UCD .46 and 60, But I have always favored them. I like the way they look and I like what I have seen of them in flight. I made a decision to sell the Funtana and purchase a .46 for conversion. The FuntanaS was fun, but it was time for a change. With Lipo's it comes in just under 6 pounds.

I have had 10 flights on this plane so far it is a blast. I pushed the prop up to an 18X10 while I am using the 14 cell 3300's and 4S4P 8ah TP pack. I have some new 10C 5S4P 7600's that I need to try out and will change the gearing to a 4.6 and swing the 17X10. Hover is just above half, flat spins are nice, but need the CG moved back and the stall just mushes to the nose. A very fun plane indeed.

A flying mate caught the last minute and a half on video of me testing the 18X10. This was at the bottom of a 14 cell GP 3300 pack, so I had to flatten it out of a hover. We will get some better video in the coming weeks to show the characteristics, but this will have to do for the moment.

Hey,
I made the decal. I can post it here if you want. I know a guy in Raleigh that makes all CF for his stuff. He just happend to have an extra one he made wit interwoven yellow kevlar...so I bought it from him. He does some pretty cool stuff with CF and even anodizes his own stuff.

Mike,

It looks like you have a great e-conversion in the UCD. Nice job!

I didn't see any all-up weight posted. Did you measure the weight?

Thanks Greg. It weighed in at 6 pounds RTF. I have switched from a 4S4P to a 5S4P (extra cells added a few ounces) and a deeper gearing. Thrust measurements are right at 2:1 now. I hope to have some more video in the next week or so that will show the performance of this setup. Now I just have to watch the motor for heat.

Here are the larger files:[link=http://www.epowerflight.com/rcu/ucd1.tif]UCDE3D Tif file[/link] and [link=http://www.epowerflight.com/rcu/ECD3D.jpg]ECD3D JPG file[/link]

I use Avery specialty paper [link=http://www.avery.com/us/Main?action=product.Details&catalogcode=WEB01&node=10210893&productcode=3383]3383[/link]. It goes through an inkjet, deskjet printer and then can be trimmed up. Not bad and the background is transparent enough for my taste (doesnt show as much on light coverings as it does on dark).

Thanks for the info
Just curious, how many watts to the prop is the setup yur using?
If i were to use a AXI 4120-14 with 16 cells which is about 700 watts..Would this be good to hover my UCD?
thx again

Per Motocalc, I am getting about 900 watts/lb on the 5S. On the 4S I was getting about 800 w/lb and it would hover and pull out at a decent clip.
I really prefer a geared solution for a 3D plane as you can get more prop for less amps. A 14" prop is about the limits on the 4120 and the amps start getting towards thermal above that. You could in all feasability gear the AXI in a belt drive or MEC superbox (same one I used) and double your output. If I already had the AXI I would gear it in the superbox at 1.5:1 swinging an 18X10. Weight should sit around 84 oz and thrust values should be around 135- 140 and 800 w/lb.

Innerdemon makes a gearbox/mount for the AXI motors.

John
That is true. And they are nice due to the mount being consolidated into one unit. Pricewise, it is the same as my aluminum mount from espritmodels.com and GB from MEC. I do think the Innerdemon handles just a bit more Watts than the Superbox. But at 1200-1400 watts it is getting into a different class of aircraft anyway.

johnnyjetprop,

Where can we find more information specifically on the AXi mount for the innerdemon gearbox? Their website is woefully out of date; lots of pages say "under construction."

I'm looking to cram a pair of big AXis into a gearbox to fly a BIG plane.

Congratulations, you now have an engine that costs over $500.
Actually my costs are Mega 22/30/2 cost me $100.00, the MEC superbox cost me $40.00 and the 14 cell pack cost me $63.00. So the "Engine" cost me $203.00. The Lithium 4S4P I got second hand for $200.00 So All up is $400.00 counting the lithiums that I can use over and over again in all three of my conversions. Now you figure your cost on a motor that will give near 2:1 thrust to weight (cause a .46 isnt going to do it) and the fuel that you will spend over the year in putting an average of 5-6 flights every weekend. Congratulations...you have spent more than me

How about your UBEC (Ultimate BEC I'm assuming )and CC P-60 (I don't know what that is).

Esprits Mega 22/30/2 is 119 so you apparently got a $19 deal on the motor. And the Superbox is 50. So you got a $10 deal.

I think the 500 figure may be closer than your 400.

And, in Ohio, if I'm LUCKY I can fly 26 weeks out of the year, which is about 130 flights, 8oz per flight, 16 flts per gallon, 8.13 gallons per year, @15 per gallon 121.95. Add in a Saito .72, which does pull nicely, @224.00 and you have $345.95.

Granted, you don't have to wipe the oil off your plane. I can do that while you're charging your batts.

I understand that in one year we will be close to even and then the next year, you would theoretically spend nothing and I would spend another $121. I think the price of electrics will continue to come down so I am not on the bandwagon yet.

I do like your carbon fibre canopy. Very nice, will that work on a glow plane?
