Default Kontronik Brushless Set 600 - Conversions

Hi,

How much power does does the new [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGCX1&P=7]Kontronik Brushless Set 600[/link] have?

More than enough to power the [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCZR7&P=ML]Great Planes Lancair[/link] .60-size ARF.

My 26-cell setup spins an APC 14x7 e-prop at an impressive 8700 RPMs! This provides plenty of power for my 9.5lb Lancair. Details on this glow-to-electric conversion can be seen in an upcoming issue of Quiet Flyer magazine soon.

Nice Greg! Since flying that plane in G2 (electrified), I have wondered how she'd really handle a conversion. Got video?

Hi Dave,

Yes, I can post some video after this weekend's R/C show. We plan to test out the flaps more as they make a big difference on landings.

The Lancair is a streamlined beauty. Great Planes did a fantastic job on it but I will still recommend it for intermediate to advanced builders and pilots. This is not a plane for a novice builder or flyer.

Regards.

I think I could handle it soon... ...now that I finally have a little more time to get out and fly! The Mobydick was the first step, and now I'm planning to get a another big plane. I just can't decide between the GP Spacewalker and the GP Tiger Moth 60. IMO, big planes are more fun to fly, since their a bit less twitchy, unlike smaller planes like the Monsun conversion. In any case, I've got to get a new TX first. Right now I'm set on the Futaba 9c, but I still have time before I buy. What are you using these days?

Dave,

I'm still using my older Futaba Super-8 radios. I have two for redundancy at shows since one radio is programmed for 67 planes! I saw the Futaba 9c last weekend. It is fantastic! Buy it.

Zimbo,

The duration is short with the CP1700 NiCd cells. I would say about 5 minutes tops. However, I will also recommend using a 20-cell setup of GP3300 cells that will double the flight time. I have so much excessive power with my 26-cell setup that the throttle rarely goes above 1/2 except for takeoffs. The Lancair is incredibly streamlined...much like a glider.

I use the CP1700 NiCd cells on new models to keep the power level high and weight down when using a new power system (Kontronik 600) and a new style plane (GP Lancair ES) that I am not familier with. I can then change to Lithium cells later to increase flight duration if I like the plane and its performance.

Here is the maiden flight on the Lancair ES. Our primary purpose was to validate the plane and power system. We trimmed it out pretty fast but kept the flight short due to the gusty wind. I'll post more video at a later time.

Hey, great. Who's got the Kontronic items, in the US? I presume they have a distributor or distributors?

Thanks,

The Kontronik Brushless Set 600 can convert the Great Planes Little Tony "Cosmic Wind" from glow power to GO power!

Greg,

Are you going to publish that on the RCU website? Looks AWESOME, I wonder how it would do on a pylon course

There is one disadvantage to living near Greg Covey. When I have an idea for a conversion, he's already got one in the works. Nothing worse than showing up at a meet with the exact same plane as someone else.

The 1/3 scale GP Christen Eagle is all mine! You hear? MINE! I am writing Don Andserson right now and telling him to put you on the Christen Eagle blacklist.

Matt,

That new GP Christen Eagle is a beauty, so go for it! We both have similar size trailers now.

Zimbo,

No, the article is exclusive to AirAge. Perhaps they will publish on their Web site in addition to the magazine. I can certainly talk about it though and will likely post a video here.

In short, the Little Tony is the best model i've ever seen from any manufacturer!

The GP Little Tony flies fantastic! The Kontronic 600 set provides incredible speed and power for this scale model.

I ran into a few issues that will be discussed in the article. One can be seen in the photos below. My aluminum spinner backplate was warped which created a terrible vibration so it had to be removed for test flying. Hobbico was gracious enough to send me a replacement spinner.

Here is the Little Toni just before touchdown. We flew it this weekend at a local event and it was a real crowd pleaser!

The 20-cell CP2400 NiCd pack is being upgraded to a 6s4p configuration of ElectriFly 1500mAh Lithium cells. This will provide a 1/2lb drop in weight while increasing the flight duration by 2-1/2 times.

Be sure to check it out at the upcoming NEAT Fair on September 17th, 18th, and 19th.

Greg,

Do you have to charge the Electrifly lipos individually since they have a separate "charge safe" lead? Or can you still charge them as a single 6s4p pack using the discharge lead?

Also, are you starting to prefer the Kontronik power systems over the AXI/Jeti combos you've used in the last few conversions?... or is it just a matter of trying some different products to see how they perform?

Hi John,

I see my Lancair review was published in the October issue of Quiet Flyer magazine. Too bad the editor axed all my flying shots.

I've been charging my ElectriFly packs as a single 6s4p "super" pack through the discharge cable. This disables the SafeCharge circuit. After the NEAT Fair, I plan to remove them from the Little Toni and charge each pack seperately as a checkout. All my big Lithium packs will be re-assessed over the Winter season when I switch to smaller indoor flying.

When high-end speed performance counts, a geared high Kv motor like the Kontronik 600 is best. It will run on 30 cells, if needed, and produce about 1.5 kilowatts of power! The Kontronik 600 is similar, if not identical, in size to the Hacker B50XL.

GREG

My son bought a kontronic fun 500 27 gd 5.2:1. Do you think this might work in a H9 Funtana? I would use 3S Lipo's. I was eyeing the FLY RC Funtana article.

The Kontronik FUN 500 27 5.2:1 I heard was about the equivalent right in between a Hacker B50 9s and 11s. Ill be using it in a Banchee.

Stephen,

The Kontronik 500 motor would certainly handle the power needed for the Funtana .40 but the Jazz 40 ESC will likely be your sticking point to push the 500 motor.

You will need an ESC that can handle a 6s or 20-cell configuration at 50amps continuous. A Jeti 77-amp Opto would work great and remain happy with any 3D abuse.

E3D Flyer,

I would recommend the Kontronik 600 motor for a .60-size 3D plane.

Per request, here is my component layout of the Little Toni when I used a 20-cell NiCd pack. The front of the plane is to the left.

The front end the of NiCd pack rested nicely in the front former just aft of the firewall. The rear of the pack was supported with a 2" thick piece of EPS foam with the center removed.
