RE: Funtana Conversion Battery Question
Stephen,
Your conversion looks good. As far as battery cooling, I have 2 large oval openings on either side of the motor that allow air from the cowl into the plane. Then there is a opening near the tail on the bottom to let air out to allow air to flow through the fuse. If you take a look at the pics that I posted, you will see the openings in the firewall. So far this has been good as far as cooling the batteries. I also have removed the balsa slant that it in the cowl area for air flow.
You will have to let me know how it goes after you get to fly it.

Did you make those oval holes? Mine doesn't have them!
Also I test flew my Funtana this morning at 0745. The plane flew good on 12 3000nimh cells good climb, loops, rolls and inverted flight. It seems too heavy. Climbs too much and wobbles at approach. I was unable to move the battery forward, so I zip tied a 2 oz. dead 2400 nicad to the MM under the cowl. I'll test it on Saturday. I have to work the next three nights.
I like how the included spinner fits with my power system.

My caps lock was stuck on. This is better. I usually weigh my planes at the post office, but this one is too big. I used a fish scale but it seems to say all my planes weigh 5 lbs.
Do you mind if I post some more Construction photos on your thread? I like the way your cooling system works. I will probably make a side air scoop because I don't have the tools to make the cuts in the thicker fire wall wood like you did.
I am using HS 81MG servos every where except the elevator which has a standard one. I am not getting the throws I want. What did you use?

Stephen,
No problem at all on the const pics.
As far as tools to create the ovals, it was just a drill bit (can't remember if it was a spade bit or a hole saw). Drilled 4 of them, then used an small exato saw to straighten the sides (and some sandpaper).
I used some standard sized Hitec 5475 digitals that I had laying around. These are used everywhere on the plane.

Here are some pics of my plane in progress. I changed to a larger but lighter tail wheel mostly because the included one would not fit on the axel. I put HS-81MG servos in the wings and rudder. Hole above rudder doubles as an air outlet.

I test flew my Funtana on Sat with a 15x8 on 14 cells. It still wanted to climb. Otherwise good.
On Sun I flew with a 14x10 and added another 2.2 oz to front and shimmed in a hair of down thrust. Better. People WOWED when it took off. One guy even asked what muffler I used to keep it so quiet. Nonbelievers. I am going to try my 4S and 5S Lipos on my next day off, if I'm not too full to fly.

Bad weather here this morning. I checked the Amps and watts on 5S1P 20C Kokams w/14x10 prop. 32A 625W. Also the Lipo's will fit further forward and I can get rid of the added nose weight.
I'll try to fly tomarrow before work depending on the weather. If I can't then I will have to wait until Monday. Working a 3 day weekend, or in reality a 3 night weekend.

Flew early this AM. Tried my 5S1P pack. I pushed my pack forward so I took 2.2 oz. out of the nose. Wrong thing to do. Very tail heavy even with the lipo moved forward. It didn't want to land in the high winds. Got it down w/o having to glue anything back togather. put the 2.2 oz. back in and it flew good again.
When I got home, I checked the CG again then I realized that I measured from the wrong start point. The front of the wing goes beyond the front of the cradle. A difference of 1&1/4 inches. Boy do I feel stupid.

RE: Funtana Conversion Battery Question
StephenT; I've been reading your post with Bhouin with great interest. I too am assembling the Funtana 40 w/AXI4120 motor, Jeti70 OPTO, Electron 6 Rx, HS-225mg servos, APC 15x10E prop, and...? for batteries. I see you used a Kokam 5s1p battery this last flight with success. I have been looking at their web site but don't see that particular battery. Is it new or am I missing something? I think I'm leaning toward their batteries, but am waiting for a reply I e-mailed to them with similar questions. I hope I get a better response from them than I got from Thunder Power.......Charlie suggested I contact Horizon.......

I use a 3S and 2S coupled in to make a 5S. I must charge them seperate as my Triton can only charge 4S. This also allows me to try 4S and 6S if I want to later because I have 2 2S and 2 3S packs. All 2100 mah 20C rated. I get them from Tower because they are cheaper than FMA direct.

RE: Funtana Conversion Battery Question
Thanks StephenT: I just checked it out, and indead they are less expensive via Tower. Thanks for the info. I thought you had to purchase FMA direct. If I use the FMA connector module, can you charge two packs at one time using an Astro 109 Charger? Naive question I know, but I am new to all of this and am just trying to make it easier..........

It is not suggested. The cells can get out of balance with each other on discharge. One pack may get overcharged while the other is okay. Then recharging can be dangerous. See pictures of this problem on my EMagic thread. Also look at the E flight power systems forum.

RE: Funtana Conversion Battery Question
John,
It would take twice as many packs to make a 5S2P. Stephen used a 3S1P and a 2S1P pack wired in series to obtain a 5S1P pack. By adding another 2S and 3S in series then wiring both of the resulting 5S1P packs in parallel you would then have a 5S2P pack.
Hope this helps.

RE: Funtana Conversion Battery Question
So are you saying, that a 3s1p and a 3s1p in series is a 6s1p? I quess I'll eventually get this battery pack thing..by the way, I can accomplish all of this with the FMA connector module, right?........[8D]

RE: Funtana Conversion Battery Question
John,
You are correct, a 3S1P and a 3S1P connected in series does equal a 6S1P. Yes, you can do this with the right FMA connector board (Kokam makes both a parallel and series connector board) , or you can make your own connector setup.

RE: Funtana Conversion Battery Question
Ok; So I'll stick my neck out with this one.....The Thunder Power 3s2p 4200mah pack should be a decent battery for my Funtana with an AXI 4120/Jeti 70 combo, eh? I only sport fly and tumble around. No 3-D..........
