To use a brushed motor on a plane that size and weight, I would recommend an [link=http://www.astroflight.com/e/env/0001UZVjjFqwY105D81K0d5/index.html?link=/index.html]Astro Flight Cobalt[/link] motor.

A good choice would be the [link=http://www.astroflight.com/e/env/0001UZVjjFqwY105D80U1N2/store/store-Cobalt.html?link=/store/store-type-tem.html&item=products:af-640s]Cobalt 40 with Superbox[/link] since it can product around 700 watts on 20 cells NiCd.

To help save some weight, you could also use two packs of 3-cell Litihium in series.

Good luck!

Motocalc's not too hard to use. First, don't bother with the Wizard. It doesn't give you anything useful IMHO. Motocalc is most useful in playing with a setup to see how it should behave in the real world.

Nova1, did you mean brushED or brushLESS? If you did mean brushed, take a second look. The price difference between an Astro Cobalt 40 and an Astro Brushless 40 isn't that huge.

Good luck with that plane. If it's the one I'm thinking of (the old .40-size kit), they have a bad reputation as unflyable snots.

Use a gear box for a brushed motor. For a brushless motor, you can go either geared or direct drive.

I was having a hard time finding the kit/arf you are talking about. I assume that the 6 1/2 pound weight is an all up glow weight. Therefore, I would expect an electric weight of about 7 lbs.

Look for 700 to 800 watts of power. Running at 40 amps, you would need a 20 volt battery. This would put you in a 6s lipo battery or a 20 cell nicad pack.

Motors that would work well in this range are:

Astroflight 40G Brushless
Geared Mega 22/30/2 or /3or/4 turn motors
AXI 4120/18
AXI 4130/16
Kontronic 600 Brushless set

Hope this helps.

John
