Racer Plane
Guys
Can anyone I D the origin of this plane? I am told it is a .25 Racer!
I got this plane from my friend Sergio at the FF during the clubs Swap Meet last year. I didn't need a plane, but he only wanted $5 bucks!!! I put my Funtana pilot and AXI 282610 motor in it w/a 12 cell 1800 mah Hecell pack on the inside. I made a wind screen out of Funtana Canopy leftovers.

RE: Racer Plane
The ailerons are too small and the plane was uncontrolable. I got it down without damage! I'm going to make bigger control surfaces and try again!

RE: Racer Plane
StephenT, The plane looks very much like a Q500 Scatcat. It was built as a 40 size Q500 racer, but could be flown as a 25 size sport flyer. multiply the width times length of wing, if total equals 500 inches square, +/- 10 inches sq and has a semi-symetrical foil then it is most likely a Scatcat. The cockpit cut out is not part of the original design. The ailerons and elevators are small as plane usually flies at 100-150+ MPH, where small surfaces become very effective. The plane was produced until around 1995 and has been recently brought back. It is a great flier and strongly built (no cockpit) as a glow powered plane.....enjoy, you have a rare bird.

RE: Racer Plane
Guys
The batteries I used on my test flight were not up to the task and gave little forward speed. I have over drawn them too often. I'll put togather a new power system and try again later. I have some 40 Amp cells to try.
Jim
Thanks for the ID of this plane. I take it the small ailerons should work if I get a forward speed above a stall?

RE: Racer Plane
StephenT, The original Scatcat weighed in around 3 1/2 lbs race ready and was fitted with a 40 sized Nelson or Equiv racing engine producing 1.8 HP Approx. The 25 equipped Scatcat weighed approx the same but only had around .8 HP. The 40 racer flew at 130 MPH average and the 25 around 60-70 MPH average. The small control surfaces where all that was required at those speeds. On the 25 size Scatcat the surfaces where just right for smooth transitions and thus made a great "sport" flyer. So, you will have to either increase the speed to at least 40-50 MPH or increase the size of the control surfaces and their throws. Landing speed was relatively high also and still required dual rate "HIGH" for good landing control. Otherwords, take-offs where quirky, racing was great, landings pretty ugly. That should give you some idea of what to do to make this plane handle the way you want. It is/was a great plane when in it's designed enviroment.
BTW, I'm having a Scatcat built for me right now, with a 25 high end engine (1.2 HP)and custom covering. The plane became available again (after 10 years out of production) about 6 months ago and I can't wait to get mine flying this spring.
Enjoy,
Jim

RE: Racer Plane
It is a quickee racer for sure and they pretty much all look alike. It's the details that tell them apart, wood or glass fuze and stuff like that. If Sergio sold it that cheap, it's probably one of the lower quality jobs like a Viper or one of the Lanier junkers. At top speed it shouldn't need much aileron throw. It was only made to go fast and turn left.
