COnverting the Extreme Flight 87" Yak - Complete!
Well guys, here it is. After a few days of work, ending with an all nighter last night, the 87" EF Yak is complete... well almost.
Having built my 87" with a DA-50, Chris Hinson, owner of EF asked if I could build him an e-converted Yak. With all the shipping going on, poor Chris didn't have time to get on it himself. I was happy to oblige.
Where do we start? Well...
It's powered with a Hacker C50 15XL witht he 6.7:1 panetary gearbox
A Hacker Master 90 Acro speed controller
2 5s3p 600 mah lipoly packs from ThunderPower
A 7.4 volt Silver series lipo and regulator for receiver
APC 24x12 prop (me thinks iut'll be a tad too much based on some great guys sharing their hard earned info)
Hitec 5945's all around (rudder too)
CF spinner

RE: COnverting the Extreme Flight 87" Yak - Complete!
The real issue is balance... can we get it? Yep, no problem with a little work.
The first thing was to get the tail done... I won't bore you with the standard building details... LOTS can be found on this thread:
[link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_2408226/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm]Extreme Flight 87" Yak 54 - Build & Fly[/link]
Once that's out of the way I assembled the wings.
I mounted the motor using 1" hard pine as standoffs and then used the Aero Mount. I pushed the motor out as far as still looked good for balance sake.
But them batteries..... hmmm... the whole setup (motor, esc, battery, mount) weighs just a little more than the DA50. I knew the batteries had to go way up front. I mulled it over several times then finally a lightbulb went off and I began cutting parts for a "tray" so to speak.
Since the Yak has a tuned pipe tunnel, it was a perfect place for them LOOOOOOONG battery packs...

Basically the tray is firmly attached to the fuse in 3 places.
I then added velcro to the bottom of the tray and sides of the batteries.

The ESC is velcroed to a litpley plate glued to the top of the engine box. Then I took a ziptie and went around it once.
The receiver pack is attached to the side of the engine box and the wires to both of these items drop into the fuse through a slit I cut in the coering on the engine box.
The battery is placed on the tray and three small velcro straps hold it firmly.

Ooooops, almost forgot the spinner...
And the last couple pics... showing the packs nd how close they are tot he cowl.
The good nes... i pretty much balanced at 1/2" aft of recommeded CG... good enough for me...
And the BEST new yet! Drum roll please! .... Brddddddddddddddd.ddddd..
Total weight is 15.25 lbs! Awesome!
I may just have to get me some e-power monster to go in it.
Hope this info is helpful!

Nice job, David!
These larger e-conversions all seem to have a balance issue due to the loss of heavy engine in the nose.
Do you have a comparison between your all-up weight and a typical glow/gas setup?

Looks like another incredible build by J. David! For those of you in the know, what is the best prop to run with this set-up? I can't wait to pick up the plane on the way to Toledo. I will have this plane on display in our booth for those of you interested in this set-up.
Thanks so much J. David for your Herculean effort! Our thoughts and prayers are with you my friend.

ORIGINAL: Maudib
The only real lightening mods were some really lite tires..... .95 oz.
I also added a hatch latch.

What did you use for the hatch latch?
