Extremeflightrc Yak-54 87"/ Plane and power system
I cant believe I finished this plane in three days and had to maiden it at SEFF. Luckily all went well and it sparked tremendous interest.
I maidened it Thursday at SEFF and then George Hicks took it up for me to get everything just right. The batteries had not been broken in, so we decided to hold it out of the demo's on Friday and placed it in the line up for Saturday instead. George gave me very positive feedback about the power system and its performance.
We still have some tweaking to do. I want to try some different battery combos and props.
Specs:
87" Yak 54
Electric- 14 lbs 12 oz/ Gas- 15lbs. 8 oz
Power- 2 Cyclon 160 Outrunners ganged to a single shaft (Atlantahobby.com)
Pro: 22X12 APC E
ESC- 2- Jeti 77 Opto's
UBEC- 6V redundant UBEC system
Batteries- 2 Thunderpower 8s2p 4ah Pro-lite bricks (one per motor)
Servos- JR 8411's on Ailerons and Elevator (4), 1- JR 8611 on rudder
Amps: 62 Amps at Full
Total watts: 3741 watts/ 250 watts per pound

Syncing the motors:
The first motor is slid on the shaft and the set screws are marked. Remove the motor and flat spot the marks. Reinstall the first motor and install the setscrews.
Take the second motor and slide it on the shaft. Take a single cell battery (I used a C battery) and wire it as depicted by the diagram. This locks the first and second motor into sync. Mark the locations of the setscrews from the second motor and remove the battery and second motor. Flat spot the marks and then reinstall the second motor on the shaft and secure the setscrews. Now the motors are synced to the shaft. Secure the motor in a mount by the rear flange using three M4 bolts and install on your plane of choice.

Interesting setup...but that's close to 700$ for the motors...at (below) that price you can get big axi/actros much cheaper with an easier installation, no ??

A 22" prop seems smal on a dubbel outrunner, Actro 60 on 10s swings 28".

One thing I forgot to post is the weight of the power system. The dual Cyclons with mount came to 2.5 lbs. I still had to add 10 ounces to the nose for balance. A concern with a single power system setup as well is being able to balance it.

An Actro 60-175 pulls 75amps on 10s 34v with 27x13" prop, a 60-140 pulls 72amp with 27x11" on 38v load, so 34v with 28x15" maby 60-65amps with the 140kv version, Actro 60 weight is 900g.
These motors will be loaded on 12-14s Lipos in future when controllers are avalibul. If you need higher/lower KV for 10s the motor can be winded after request.
Maximum % including controller and conections are 90%.

Thanks to you both.
Joacim,
It was gusting to 30 mph during the demo. Not very fun conditions to fly in.

RE: Extremeflightrc Yak-54 87"/ Plane and power system
Just a little update. I am now swinging a 24x12 APC prop and the packs have been changed to 8S3P instead of the 2P. I have also pulled the Jeti 77 Optos out in favor of 2 CastleCreations Pheonix 110HV's. The system is pulling 80 amps and pushing 4800 watts. Performance is insane and most flying is done at 1/4 throttle. This system at this point is suited for a 100cc plane......Im not ruling that out .
Here are a couple of videos of the performance at 4800 watts. The first half of the flight is cut to 4mb for the bandwidth challenged and the second video is left at my standard 15mb.

Mike,
Wow, a 24x12 on 8S. By the looks in the video there is no doubt that set-up would fly a 100cc plane. Great job and good flying there.

Thanks. There is no doubt in my mind about this setup flying a 100cc plane. I am researching the possibility for SEFF. The only issue is transporting a larger plane. That means a purchase of a trailer. That prospect excites me...wish I could say the same for my wife .
