Glider Conversion
I have finally taken the plunge into brushless motors and LiPo batteries by converting
a motorglider I built 4 years ago. This is a Twiliter II with 66" wingspan designed by
Randy Randolph and published in Model Airplane News in 1987. It was originally
powered by an OS.10 engine and flew quite nicely. But e-power does offer the
advantage of restarting the motor, of course. In planning for the conversion I realized
that although the electric power system weighed less I would have to add enough
lead to balance the model properly. So in the end I had to put in 5.5 oz. of lead (I
really do hate that!) and the weight went from 30.4 oz. to 31.1 oz.
I did not want to butcher the fuselage by extending the nose but opted for adding a
1/4" ply new firewall and mounting the motor beyond it. Power is provided by an AXI
2212/20 motor turning an 8x4 APC-E prop and 3x1500 Kokam cells. The closeup
photo shows the thick shim needed to give downthrust for the climbout. Very relaxing
to fly even on a breezy day.
