Axi Or Himax motor for electric Funtana x 50
Hey. I am just beginning the process of making my new funtana x 50 electric and I was wondering if you guys could tell me which motor would be best for the plane- one of the AXI 4130 series, or the Himaxx 5030/390. I am stumped as to which would be best for 3D flight. I will be running the motor on a TP 3S2P 4200mah Li-Po pack.
Thanks!
Thanks!

First off to fly a 50 size funtana 3d plane you will need 150 watts/lb. An equipment list goes like this:
6s lipo @ 4000 mah or so,
an axi 413016 with radial mount kit, (a 412018 would also work great)
a ccphx 80
an APC 16x10 eprop, (15x10 for 412018)
a longer lg from TNT landing gear.
Use two 3s packs in series for the needed go power. This will put you in the kilowatt range and fly the funtana excellently. It is better to be amazed than disappointed.

ps this is not theoretical, been there, done that, with the earlier funtana 46 -r

RE: Axi Or Himax motor for electric Funtana x 50
Thanks for the help. Now I'm going with 2 3 cell 3700mah polyquest packs run in series. I've never run packs together before so I hope I dont screw anything up! I'm still not quite sure on which motor to run though. Anyone know how many watts the Axi can run? The Himax can go to 1500 but I'm not sure about the Axi.

Ok, say I used 2 3cell 3700mah polyquest lipos run in series and a 17 X 10 prop. Would I get more power out of the Axi 4130/20 or the Himax 5030/390? I'm sorry for all of the questions, I hope I'm not annoying. I just dont want to spend all this money and be disappointed, like Ray said.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

I too have the Hangar 9 Funtana X50,as yet unflown, fitted with a Axi 4130/16 with 2 Hyperion 4350 3s Lipo's in series. Very nice plane, shame I had to cut a hatch for the batteries, but it worked out very well. Static readings are Watts=940 Amps+45 Prop is 16+8 about 145 watts per. lb which is pretty good, soon tell if so after the maiden flight...HH

I also have two 4350 3s lipos in series, except mine are polyquests. I have a himaxx HC5030-390 spinning a 17 x 10 prop. I'm not sure if im going to cut a hatch out, i may just go through the trouble of taking the wing off for every charge. I havent done a static test yet but i'm hoping to get to the sweet 200 watts/lb which may be asking a lot. The 17 x 10 prop should help though. I should get to maiden this week. good luck on your maiden YOHH

I was somewhat debating the Funtana 50 X over the UCD..
I wound up with a UCD 46..
I'm going with a 4130/16 and 6S 3850's and 4400's..

You can run a 6s setup with the AXi 4130/20 with a 20 x 13 prop and it will provide right at 200 ounces of thrust, which for this model will be a power to weight ratio of close to 3/1, 1000+ watts at 290+ watts per pound. That's about 25 amps draw from the motor, 74 battery amps keeping your 20c polyquest in the happy zone (headroom for up to 50c bursts). You will have the power to climb out of any maneuvre at around half throttle. You could use a 40 amp speed control and be way in the clear. That's just one of many possibilities.....

If your budget is tight, you may want to check out some of the motors at www.unitedhobby.com..

I already bought and installed the Himax motor but if the Axi is able to spin a 20 x 13 prop and give 290 watts/pound of thrust, I may go ahead and buy it also. 290 watts/lb is insane! I dont think the Himax could spin a prop that big could it? It is rated for 1500 watts.

The ratings from most manufacturers are quite conservative and aimed at your success without necessarily being an expert. Most motors can be run at higher loads than the ratings if you provide unlimited cooling air to the motor and a good way for the heated air to go away. Use of behind the firewall mounting, or metal mounts that block cooling air flow, or using large spinners that push the cooling air away from the motor, are all motor killers if you run them above the ratings. Even then the motors get really hot. All ratings are based on how hot you let the motor become while in operation. Too hot and out comes the magic smoke.
If you can use the radial type mount which puts the rotating can of the outrunner in the breeze. Also use a Dubro prop nut instead of a big spinner. This jams cooling air into the motor and minimizes heating. Even with a cowl the use of the spinner nut floods the motor with colling air. It may not be scale looking but long lasting motors are also a goodness.

Used the Himax 5030/390 on my Funtana x50 with 6s and a 17 x 10 and got 1450 watts@68amps. Overkill, yes. Fun, yesss!!! Gives you about 200watts/lb. Seems to fly about 1/2 throttle most of the time. Hovers at 1/2 throttle too. Perfect powerplant for this model. Anything less and I'd be dissapointed. [:-] See video section for E-powered Funtana X50. Doesn't show much vertical in the video, trust me it's there!
