Default Power choice for 1/3 Pitts Special

My brothers and I have a [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXAVP9&P=7]1/3 Pitts Special ARF[/link] from Tower Hobbies.

14-16 lbs. 68.5 wingspan. Calls for a 1.6-2.7 (26-45cc) glow.

The options they give for e-power are as follows:
Kontronik Tango 45-06 or Kontronik Fun 500-27 (with gearbox, yuck)
with a Jazz 40-6-18 ESC, 16 cell NiMH pack and a 13x8 prop, drawing about 38 amps.

Our previous big conversion is a 10 lb Telemaster SR, and the Pitts is considerably bigger.

I am not familiar with the motors Tower recommends. What have you used for planes in this weight range?

p.s. We are not against LiPos. We are using 6s3p 2100mAh cells for the Telemaster, pulling close to the same amps at full throttle.

I would not recommend the Kontronik motors that you listed. I would recommend either AXI or E-flite or Cyclon outrunner motors. The AXI motors are sold at Hobby Lobby and the others at Horizon Hobby.

To better understand the power level of the motor you need for your 16lb 33% Pitts, please read my [link=http://www.gregcovey.com/Glow_Conversions_Made_Easy.htm]Glow Conversions Made Easy[/link] article.

Good luck!

I'm flying mine with a Hacker A60-14L and their 90 AMP ESC on 10S 4600 ma Extreme Thunder Power LiPo pack. Swings a 20" prop. Plenty of power. There is a conversion thread over at RCGroups.

Greg, the conversion page has great information. Thank you!

bruff, I did go there to search, but I did not read back far enough. Yours is exactly the type of thread I was hoping to find.

Bob,
Great thread. I love the motor mount. I hope ours comes out looking as clean.
Did you ever get a chance to get a watt meter on your plane? Oh, and what is the all up weight?
You mention one test flight on your thread. How much have you flown it since then? How much juice did you have to put back in to the bats after typical flights? How long are typical flights? How peppy are the flights performance wise? Gentle cruising around? Knife edge? Unlimited vertical?
We are trying to pick a power level. We don't want to be short changed, but we don't want to waste money on battery packs that are too large.

More questions for Bob:
Whose prop and what size did you use?
Which prop adapter did you use?
Did the motor mount come with doubled up brackets, or did you buy 2 mounts so that you could double them?
