    Large electric warbirds 60 size plus,,,lets see em

    Ok guys I know I am not the only one out there converting the larger 60 size and bigger warbirds into electric flyers. Here are a couple of my daily flyers, OK one or two of em might have gone in but I'll tell ya when I put a warbird in their is no wondering if it can be fixed,,,I fly em like I stole em, and have fun doing it.

    Hi Scott,
    Ya know I am stuck on these AXI motors. The latest one that has come out is the 5345 series. I have the middle one and plane on sticking it in two projects. The first one is going to be a 82" Midwest Texan T-6. Then the Top Flight P-51, the Big Beautiful Doll ARF. Both of these are assembled and just waiting on power systems, and some money for the lipolys. I will be using the spin ESC so I can use 12 cells of lipoly. I hope to swing a 20" to 22" prop with say a 12 to 14 pitch prop. I have not done the test yet but I know the test will turn out good. I have not as of yet gone to multi blade props but I do like your idea for the 4 bladed prop on the P-51.

    I really like the idea of 4 blades. I'm finishing up (read repairing after aborted maiden/hard landing) a TF Spitfire with an RCV turning a 15.5" 4 blade APC. To me, warbirds just don't look right with small 2 blade props. On 60 sized planes, the only choices for 4b is either the RCV or electric. Time to try electric.

    Scott, Your Top Flight Spitfire is very nice. It would tear up the sky with a 5320 AXI on 10 cells in it. I know the Top Flight kits get somewhat thin inside on the Spitfire model, might get a little tight but can be done.

    My friend flys this plane too, nice flying plane. I went with the VQ P-38, just about done with it but need to figure out a better way to close and open the gear doors. The VQ P-38 has a much heaver wing loading. I am running 2, 4130/16 on 6 cells each.

    Guys:

    Beautiful stuff, makes me want to take that 4130 AXI that has been sitting for a project for nearly a year out and find something great for it Maby this winter and the finance department is not watcing. Yea, I gotta keeper like most. Right now there is a MD Katanna AXI powered on the table and a AJ Extra 330L, Hacker powered in the box waiting. This is my year to become a very good 3-D pilot or else, the projects are backing up. And yes, good thing I have a keeper or probably go hungry to buy something I just can not live without. ENJOY

    Ummm, N/P 90" P-38 like Mikes, have the VQ version sitting in the box yet.

    Hangar 9 Camel and P40, Polks DC3 converted to an AC47 (chain guns spin), CMP P47.

    Along with the VQ P38 still to come is the Hangar 9 B25, AT-6, and I just ordered the CMP Corsair.

    Hey have to stock up on winter projects.

    I have a bunch, but not too many photos uploaded. Here's my Hellcat:

    Other large electrics are:

    60 size: P40, P51, Spitfire, P47, Zero & AT6
    1/5 scale: Nieuport 17 & Sopwith

    I have a Tucano in the works and a KMP Stuka on order.

    Most are using an Eflight Power 60 or 46. The Tucanno and Stuka will use a Power 110.

    The Fw190 is a Top Flight glassed. The motor is a AXI 5330, retracts are Spring Air.

    Here is a clip of the latest conversion. Just look at the take off and then go to the landing. Inbetween is just sky. This is a Midwest Texan, weight is 21 pounds, using an AXI 5345/18 on 12 cells, swings a 20/13 prop and pulls about 65 static amps on the bench. This power system was used in this Texan for a test for an upcoming P-51 ARF, the Big Beautiful Doll from Top Flight. This power system has more than enouh power for the P-51. It was over powered in the Texan. I flew the Texan at 1/2 throtal.     I just picked up an E-Flite 110 that will go into my next build, a 1/7 scale P-51B Mustang Top Flite Anniversary Gold Edition kit. I'll use a Pheonix 85 HV controller. Right now, I'm looking at using two MaxAmp 4S2P 8000mah 20C batteries in series. I'll hold off on the batteries until the end and see what's available then.

    I am currently building a Topflite Corsair Gold Edition. I am planning on going electric. I would like to hear from somebody who has done this for how and what they modified. I am planning on using a Turborix 833 rpm outrunner with a Turborix 80A ESC. I am planning on using standard airtronics servos. I have the bird basically built and covered but when I did it I was planning on Nitro instead of Electric so I need to make some mods.

    It has Fixed gear (no retracts)
    and I Don't have a clue as to what battery needs are yet...

    It's not the TF, but might give you some ideas. Mine's the CMP 120 scale Corsair.
    EFlite 110 motor, HTX 100 amp esc, Ultimate bec, 9S 3700 pack, swinging an APC 15 x 13 x 3 prop.

    Built my own landing gear, including the retractable tail wheel. I made the outer wings removable, as I've already designed my own set of mechanics to fold the wings.

    I have converted the World Models P-47 ARF to Electric power. I get 10 minute plus flights; its performance level is very similar to want it would be with a strong 120 / 140 4-cycle motor...but no oil to clean up after each flight! I've been cleaning oil off planes for over 40 years and I'm tired of it.

    The only modifications I made to the World Model version ARF kit was to cut out fabricate & re-enforce a nose top hatch. I also added a couple of washers under the retractable landing gear mounting brackets at the rear of each to cause the main wheels when down & locked to be farther forward. This puts a bit more needed weight on the tail wheel for better crosswind taxiing, and makes wheel landings a breeze. In fact the tail weight is so light on this version of P-47 a bean bag draped across the rear of the fuse is needed when the wind is above 8 mph. All up flying weight is about 13lbs. Warbirds like to be nose heavy, makes for better handling during landings.

    I entered my P-47 in the Warbird over Denver contest held a couple of weeks ago and won a second place trophy, not bad first time out.

    The motor I picked was the E-flite 110 / using either a Master Airscrew 16X8 three blade prop or a two blade APC 17X8 prop. I fabricated a series / parallel bus bar out of dean’s plugs. Six 11.1 2500ma high C Lipo's three in series then each set of three paralleled to provide 5000ma @ about 34 volts. Happens to be just enough space just behind the firewall accessible through my top hatch for all six batteries & buss bar. I remove all six batteries after each flight charge each one separately & simultaneously using two four output Great Planes PolyCharge4 LiPo Chargers. I decided to go the bus bar route so I could use the 11.1-volt batteries on smaller electrics that I already have been flying for years. The two 4 output chargers are perfect, all you need is good strong charging source battery, and possibly a second set of 6 Lipo's and you can fly as many flights in a day as you want.

    At the last minute before the Warbird Rally, I purchased the AeroSound unit programmed for the P-47 sound. I installed it with two 4-inch speakers in the cowling, it works great..Engine startup sound is very real, but I would like to have it be louder while flying! I e-mailed Axel the creator of the Sound system; he says all that is needed to make louder sound are more & larger speakers. I tested his advise on one 14 inch large magnet speaker in my shop, and he's correct that sound was Os-umm it shook the windows in my shop!! I drove that large speaker with his low voltage 40w amp. directly wired. Anyway the sound with the two 4 inch speakers is good as long as there is no other nitro or gas models flying at the same time.
